darussalam free ebooks download: The Migration Myth in Policy and Practice AKM Ahsan Ullah, Md Shahidul Haque, 2020-01-01 This book investigates the long-term impact of migration on development, engaging in a thorough analysis of the pertinent factors in migration. Migration scholars and stakeholders have long placed emphasis on the necessity of migration for development. At the heart of this book is the question: Has migration made development necessary, or is it the other way around? While existing literature is predominantly occupied with positive impressions about the migration-development nexus, this book challenges associated pervasive generalizations about the impact of migration, indicating that migration has not impacted all regions equally. This volume thus grapples with the different extents to which migration has impacted development by delving into the social costs that migrants often pay in the long run. With empirical support, this book proffers that some countries are becoming over-dependent on migration. An excellent resource for both policymakers working on migration policy, and scholars in international relations, migration and development studies, this book presents a range of innovative ideas in relation to the remittance-development nexus.

darussalam free ebooks download: Borneo Studies in History, Society and Culture Victor T. King, Zawawi Ibrahim, Noor Hasharina Hassan, 2016-08-12 This edited book is the first major review of what has been achieved in Borneo Studies to date. Chapters in this book situate research on Borneo within the general disciplinary fields of the social sciences, with the weight of attention devoted to anthropological research and related fields such as development studies, gender studies, environmental studies, social policy studies and cultural studies. Some of the chapters in this book are extended versions of presentations at the Borneo Research Council’s international conference hosted by Universiti Brunei Darussalam in June 2012 and a Borneo Studies workshop organised in Brunei in 2012. The volume examines some of the major debates and controversies in Borneo Studies, including those which have served to connect post-war research on Borneo to wider scholarship. It also assesses some of the more recent contributions and interests of locally based researchers in universities and other institutions in Borneo itself. The major strength of the book is the inclusion of a substantial amount of research undertaken by scholars working and teaching within the Southeast Asian region. In particular there is an examination of research materials published in the vernacular, notably the outpouring of work published in Indonesian by the Institut Dayakologi in Pontianak. In doing so, the book also addresses the urgent matters which have not received the attention they deserve, specifically subjects, themes and issues that have already been covered but require further contemplation, elaboration and research, and the scope for disciplinary and multidisciplinary collaboration in Borneo Studies. The book is a valuable resource and reference work for students and researchers interested in social science scholarship on Borneo, and for those with wider interests in Indonesia and Malaysia, and in the Southeast Asian region.
darussalam free ebooks download: UMAR IBN AL-KHATTAB MOIN QAZI, 2025-01-26 This is a biography of one of the greatest Caliphs of the Islamic epoch. The well known author Moin Qazi describes the vast range of his noble qualitiesIn the seventh century, the envoy of the Roman Emperor set out for Medinah, accompanied by a large entourage, flaunting the pageantry of adornments for which the Roman Empire was famous. On arrival in the metropolis of Islam, he enquired from a passer-by: “Tell me please, where is the palace of the Caliph?” The Arab looked around and was confused by the absence of any sign of royalty. He was amazed and prompted by a curious emotional thought. He hinted to the Arab commoner, “What do you mean by a palace?” retorted the Arab.” I mean the palace of Umar, the Caliph of Islam,” added the envoy. ‘‘Oh! You want to see Umar. He took him inside the palace. To his amazement, the Caliph was lying on the floor shorn of any trappings of royalty, which the envoy felt embarrassed at the humble sight. His report of the observation Impressed the Roman Emperor. Converting to Islam in the 6th year after Prophet Muhammad’s first revelation, Umar spent 18 years in the companionship of the Prophet. He succeeded Caliph Abu Bakr on 23 August 634 and played a significant role in Islam. His reign saw the transformation of the Islamic state from an Arabian principality to a world power, controlling the whole territory of the former Sassanid Persian Empire and more than two-thirds of the Eastern Roman Empire. His legislative abilities, his firm political and administrative control over a rapidly expanding empire and his brilliantly coordinated attacks against the Sassanid Persian Empire that resulted in the conquest of the Persian Empire in less than two years marked his reputation as an astute political and military strategist. Throughout this remarkable expansion,. A strong ruler, stern toward offenders, and ascetic to the point of harshness, he enjoyed enormous respect for his commitment to justice and authority.

FLLA is believed to be an important cause of students’ “dumb English”. Considering the paucity of monographs on FLLA in China, this book represents an important step towards filling this gap. The author uses his PhD dissertation as a foundation for reviewing and discussing previous literature, as well as the current status of and major issues concerning FLLA worldwide. The book explores FLLA in China by using innovative triangulated research methodology, combining both quantitative and qualitative methods, namely surveys, focused interviews, and classroom observations. It also highlights the significance and implications of the research results and predicts the future of global FLLA research with a particular focus on China.   darussalam free ebooks download: Brunei English David Deterding, Salbrina Sharbawi, 2013-05-13 This detailed survey of Brunei English reflects the burgeoning academic interest in the many new varieties of English which are fast evolving around the world. Wholly up to date, the study is based on careful analysis of a substantial dataset that provides real-life examples of usage to illustrate the narrative throughout. As well as a thorough account of the pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary usage, and discourse patterns of Brunei English, the volume explores its historical and educational background and current developmental trends, providing an in-depth review of the patterns of English usage within this multilingual, oil-rich society on the north-western coast of Borneo. Written in a non-technical style throughout that will assist non-specialists wishing to grasp the fundamentals of this unique brand of the English language, the work is a worthy addition to Springer’s series on multilingual education that plugs a gap in the coverage of the numerous varieties of English being used across South East Asia. “The authors bring renewed and badly needed attention to the long-overlooked development of Brunei English. Their examination of the variety not only documents the features and functions of English within Brunei society, it also suggests the development of regional or global varieties of English that extend beyond Brunei, and even beyond South East Asia.” Andrew Moody, University of Macau

darussalam free ebooks download: Fifa 192 Stanley Park, 2004-09-01 This is the true story behind the legend of the Brunei Darussalam National Football Team, almost but not quite, the worst international team in the world. Stanley Park, the alter ego of a desperate and disillusioned sporting romantic abroad, needs the Jamaican Bobsleigh Team of world soccer to bring him financial and moral salvation. Set in the alien cultural maelstrom of a near-bankrupt and comically corrupt Islamic despotism, Stanley's travails as the teams media manager illuminate football for what it truly is: a spherical, hand-stitched universe of heaven and hell. Kick or be kicked is football's moral imperative. A true Scouser, armed only with a yellow anorak and a war cry of Giblets, Stanley Park's fight for justice in Brunei is a veritable sporting Jihad. Better than Fever Pitch: more balls, more laughs, more giblets. The universal truths of football as uniquely revealed by Stanley Park. --Brian Reade, U.K.'s #1 sports columnist, The Daily Mirror

Riddell, 2017-04-24 In Malay Court Religion, Culture and Language: Interpreting the Qurʾān in 17th Century Aceh Peter G. Riddell explores the 17th century context in the Sultanate of Aceh that produced the two works, and the history of both texts. He argues that political, social and religious factors provide important windows into the content and approaches of both Qur’anic commentaries. He also provides a transliteration of the Jawi Malay text of both commentaries on sūra 18 of the Qur'ān (al-Kahf), as well as an annotated translation into English. This work represents an important contribution to the search for greater understanding of the early Islamic history of the Malay-Indonesian world.
