And at times, great adversaries. Young abolitionists when they met in Rochester in the 1840s, they were full of hopes, dreams, and a common purpose. As they grew to become the cultural icons we know today, their movements collided and their friendship was severely tested. This is the story of that forty-five-year friendship – from its beginning in Rochester, through a civil war, and to the highest halls of government. They agitated the nation, they agitated each other, and, in doing so, they helped shape the Constitution and the course of American history. |

dansville balloon festival 2023 tickets: David Hume Nicholas T. Phillipson, 2014-05-14 A giant of the eighteenth-century Enlightenment, David Hume was one of the most important philosophers ever to write in English. He was also a brilliant historian. In this book--a new and revised edition of his 1989 classic--Nicholas Phillipson shows how Hume freed history from religion and politics. As a philosopher, Hume sought a way of seeing the world and pursuing happiness independently of a belief in God. His groundbreaking approach applied the same outlook to Britain's history, showing how the past was shaped solely through human choices and actions. In this analysis of Hume's life and works, from his university days in Edinburgh to the rapturous reception of his History of England, Nicholas Phillipson reveals the gradual process by which one of the greatest Western philosophers turned himself into one of the greatest historians of Britain. In doing so, he shows us how revolutionary Hume was, and why his ideas still matter today. |

dansville balloon festival 2023 tickets: Georgia O'Keeffe René Paul Barilleaux, Sarah Whitaker Peters, Georgia O'Keeffe, 2006 Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) has become one of America's best-known artists. This book, which accompanies an exhibition of the same name, centers on O'Keeffe's efforts to ensure proper conservation of the fragile surfaces of her paintings of bones, flowers, and landscapes. Based on previously unpublished correspondence between O'Keeffe and distinguished conservator Caroline Keck, this catalogue from the Mississippi Museum of Art presents entirely new information about the relationship between O'Keeffe's aesthetic vision and her distinctive handling of paint and pastel. O'Keeffe's use of color has long been regarded as a source of the great emotional power that animates her abstract renderings of natural forms. But little was known about her techniques, because she surrounded her studio practices with a wall of secrecy. Her correspondence with Keck reveals that she was surprisingly traditional, sometimes making her own color chips and pastel sticks and even at times grinding her own pigments. The essays in Georgia O'Keeffe: Color and Conservation consider the artist's enduring love of the very substance of color. Through close analysis of paintings and pastels with a continuous history of conservation, the essays document O'Keeffe's and Keck's painstaking efforts to restore damaged art to its original state. The discussion and accompanying illustrations will give readers an expanded understanding of the subtle beauty and diversity of O'Keeffe's painting methods. |

dansville balloon festival 2023 tickets: Iroquois Supernatural Michael Bastine, Mason Winfield, 2011-08-16 Brings the paranormal beings and places of the Iroquois folklore tradition to life through historic and contemporary accounts of otherworldly encounters • Recounts stories of shapeshifting witches, giant flying heads, enchanted masks, ethereal lights, talking animals, Little People, spirit-choirs, potent curses, and haunted hills, roads, and battlefields • Includes accounts of miraculous healings by shamans and medicine people such as Mad Bear and Ted Williams • Shows how these traditions can help one see the richness of the world and help those who have lost the chants of their own ancestors With a rich history reaching back more than one thousand years, the six nations of the Iroquois Confederacy--the Mohawk, the Oneida, the Onondaga, the Cayuga, the Seneca, and the Tuscarora--are considered to be the most avid storytellers on earth with a collection of tales so vast it would dwarf those of any other society. Covering nearly the whole of New York State from the Hudson and Mohawk River Valleys westward across the Finger Lakes region to Niagara Falls and Salamanca, this mystical culture’s supernatural tradition is the psychic bedrock of the Northeast, yet their treasury of tales and beliefs is largely unknown and their most powerful sacred sites unrecognized. Assembling the lore and beliefs of this guarded spiritual legacy, Michael Bastine and Mason Winfield share the stories they have collected of both historic and contemporary encounters with beings and places of Iroquois legend: shapeshifting witches, strange forest creatures, ethereal lights, vampire zombies, cursed areas, dark magicians, talking animals, enchanted masks, and haunted hills, roads, and battlefields as well as accounts of miraculous healings by medicine people such as Mad Bear and Ted Williams. Grounding their tales with a history of the Haundenosaunee, the People of the Long House, the authors show how the supernatural beings, places, and customs of the Iroquois live on in contemporary paranormal experience, still surfacing as startling and sometimes inspiring reports of otherworldly creatures, haunted sites, after-death messages, and mystical visions. Providing a link with America’s oldest spiritual roots, these stories help us more deeply know the nature and super-nature around us as well as offer spiritual insights for those who can no longer hear the chants of their own ancestors. |

dansville balloon festival 2023 tickets: A Narrative of the Life of Mrs. Mary Jemison James E. Seaver, 1990-05-01 As one of the earliest literary forms of colonial America, the Native American captivity narrative is important not only in the history of American letters but also as an indispensable source concerning the colonization of the “frontier,” the peoples who dwelt on either side of it, and the often limited understanding they had of one another. A Narrative of the Life of Mrs. Mary Jemison is one of the best of this literary genre. In 1758, fifteen-year-old Mary Jemison and her family were captured near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, by a Shawnee and French raiding party. Shortly thereafter, her family was killed; she was turned over to a Seneca family, adopted by them, and four years later taken to their western New York homeland—where, by choice, she spent the rest of her life as an Iroquois wife, mother, and landed proprietor. In time she gained respect as a negotiator and was known in New York and adjacent states as the “white woman of the Genesee.” James E. Seaver’s account of her life, written in the first person, taking on her voice as narrator, tells not only of her own adventures and misfortunes but also of the lives, customs, and attitudes of the Indians with whom she identified. When Seaver (about whom very little is known) interviewed Jemison in 1823, she was eighty years old. She did not read or write English, but she spoke it fluently. The book, published in 1824, continues to be a valuable source of Seneca history and chronicles a remarkable woman's life. |

dansville balloon festival 2023 tickets: Vanguard Martha S. Jones, 2020-09-08 The epic history of African American women's pursuit of political power -- and how it transformed America. In the standard story, the suffrage crusade began in Seneca Falls in 1848 and ended with the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920. But this overwhelmingly white women's movement did not win the vote for most black women. Securing their rights required a movement of their own. In Vanguard, acclaimed historian Martha S. Jones offers a new history of African American women's political lives in America. She recounts how they defied both racism and sexism to fight for the ballot, and how they wielded political power to secure the equality and dignity of all persons. From the earliest days of the republic to the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act and beyond, Jones excavates the lives and work of black women -- Maria Stewart, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Fannie Lou Hamer, and more -- who were the vanguard of women's rights, calling on America to realize its best ideals. |

dansville balloon festival 2023 tickets: The Mystery of Utsuro-Bune Shoichi Kamon, 2019-05-10 In Japan, it is well-known that there are mysterious documents that may be related to modern UFO phenomena. It is certain that they were written about two hundred years ago, long before 1947 (when the first UFO sighting was recorded). These documents state the details of an incident that occurred on a Japanese beach in 1803 and the description provided resembles modern UFO close encounters of the third kind. In most of the documents, a disk-shaped ship called Utsuro-bune (UFO?), a strange woman speaking an unknown language (alien?) and strange characters (alien hieroglyphs?) are depicted. At present, a total of twelve documents detailing the same incident have been found which is an indicator of the validity of the incident, given the high number. If the UFO-like craft described in the documents based on actual observations of UFOs in Japan two hundred years ago is verified, the documents can be considered as strong evidence of the existence of UFOs.From the viewpoint of folklore, the incident has been considered as part of the legends of Utsuro-bune (hollow ship in English) for a long time; these legends have been passed down in Japan, and Utsuro-bune is a ship based on the human imagination. However, following the arrival of UFO fever from the USA in 1947, a mystery emerged around how the disk-shaped ship depicted in the documents resembles a UFO to such an extent. Can it be considered the long-waited hard evidence of the existence of UFOs? This intriguing story has been known as the Utsuro-bune UFO legend in Japan. The purpose of this book is to document an exhaustive study of this Utsuro-bune UFO legend from scientific, historical, and folkloric viewpoints. How did the Japanese author of the documents in the Edo Period, which was two hundred years ago, imagine UFO-like shapes when the visual characteristics of a modern UFO could not possibly have been known at that time? Were the pictures of the Utsuro-bune UFO drawn based on an actual UFO sighting dating back to the Edo Period? This book will be the first, the only, and the most complete documentation of this mystery; it is available in English and employs principles of both science and reason. The reader will be fascinated by the bizarre circumstances of this mystery which can be summarized by the following question: Why are ships similar to UFOs depicted in the ancient literature of the Edo Period, which took place two hundred years ago, in Japan? |
