As the technological and global influences continue to challenge the dominant narrative in academic psychology, conflated with WEIRD data assumptions, interdisciplinary research will continue to increase in value and scope, where LeVine’s classical approach in psychological anthropology, combined with psychoanalysis, developmental psychology, demography, language or area research and population studies, offers a path forward. Stone argues that in the West the self has often been understood in opposition to the maternal body, so that one must separate oneself from the mother and maternal care-givers on whom one depended in childhood to become a self or, in modernity, an autonomous subject. These assumptions make it difficult to be a mother and a subject, an autonomous creator of meaning. Insofar as mothers nonetheless strive to regain their subjectivity when their motherhood seems to have compromised it, theirs cannot be the usual kind of subjectivity premised on separation from the maternal body. Mothers are subjects of a new kind, who generate meanings and acquire agency from their position of re-immersion in the realm of maternal body relations, of bodily intimacy and dependency. According to the diverse group of scholars, researchers, and clinicians who have contributed chapters to this book, psychological agency is not a fixed entity that conforms to traditional definitions of free will but an affective, embodied, and relational processing of human experience. Agency is dependent on the biological, social, and cultural contexts that inform and shape who we are. Yet agency also involves the creation of meaning and the capacity for imagining new and different ways of being and acting and cannot be entirely reduced to biology or culture. This generative potential of agency is central to the process of psychotherapy and to psychological change and development. The chapters explore psychological agency in theoretical, clinical and developmental, and social and cultural contexts. Psychological agency is presented as situated within a web of intersecting biophysical and cultural contexts in an ongoing interactive and developmental process. Persons are seen as not only shaped by, but also capable of fashioning and refashioning their contexts in new and meaningful ways. The contributors have all trained in psychology or psychiatry, and many have backgrounds in philosophy; wherever possible they combinetheoretical discussion with clinical case illustration. Nevertheless, its significance is often ignored or minimized. This issue of Spring aims to show just how extensive and fraught Jung's ties to India were and to present attempts from a number of directions to plumb the meaning of the relationship and, in the spirit of active imagination, to dream it onward into the present and future. In this issue we will focus mostly on Jung's connections with Hindu thought. Buddhism and Hinduism in complex ways grew out of one another, so it is inevitable that there will be some overlap between the two. However, in spite of Jung's professed preference for Buddhism, he made much more use of Hindu (and pre-Hindu and pre-Buddhist Vedic) thought, as will be evident from the papers in this issue. We hope that Jung and India will open channels of thinking and practice with the potential to enrich Jungian understanding of Indian traditions and, equally, to stimulate creative interpretations and extensions of Jungian thought. The papers for this volume fall rather clearly into four categories: (1) historical and comparative work integrating India and Jung (2) papers comparing and contrasting Jungian ideas with specific Indian traditions (3) Jungian interpretations of Hindu myths and rituals, and (4) personal memoirs combining Jungian and Indian themes. Despite the neat taxonomy, many of the papers touch on more than one category, and all in some way broach the fundamental questions that motivated this work in the first place: What unconscious, implied, nascent, or potential dialogue hangs poised in the field of thought and practice between Carl Jung's psychology and the 3500-year-old tradition of Indian thought? And what can we do to help it emerge for the benefit of both? |
