criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management: Criteria and Indicators for Sustainable Forest Management Robert John Raison, Alan Gordon Brown, David W. Flinn, 2001 There is increasing pressure on the forestry industry to adopt sustainable practices, but a lack of knowledge about how to facilitate this, and how to measure sustainability. This book reviews current thinking about scientifically based indicators, and sustainable management of natural forests and plantations. Information is applicable to boreal, temperate and tropical biomes. The contents have been developed from papers presented at a IUFRO conference held in Australia, in order to develop a state-of the art report on this subject. |

criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management: Canada's Report on the Montréal Process Criteria and Indicators for the Conservation and Sustainable Management of Temperate and Boreal Forests Canadian Forest Service, 1997 The Montreal Process was formed to advance the development of internationally agreed-upon criteria & indicators for sustainable forest management. The Canadian commitment to this process is demonstrated by the development of a domestic set of seven criteria & indicators, six of this relate to forest conditions, attributes, functions, or benefits. The seventh relates to the overall policy framework that can facilitate sustainable forest management and support efforts to conserve, maintain, or enhance the conditions, attributes, and benefits captured in the first six criteria. This report begins with an introduction describing forest ecosystems and forest management in Canada, explaining the area of forest covered by the report, and indentifying Canada-specific forest management characteristics to help place the criteria & indicators framework in context. The main section contains reports on the criteria, each with an introduction and reports on the corresponding indicators (what is being measured, indicator data or factual description, information sources). The final section contains a summary of all the criteria as well as an overview of Canada's ability to report on them and plans to enhance reporting capability in the future. Includes glossary. |
criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management: Sustainable Forest Management John L. Innes, Anna V. Tikina, 2016-12-19 Sustainable Forest Management provides the necessary material to educate students about forestry and the contemporary role of forests in ecosystems and society. This comprehensive textbook on the concept and practice of sustainable forest management sets the standard for practice worldwide. Early chapters concentrate on conceptual aspects, relating sustainable forestry management to international policy. In particular, they consider the concept of criteria and indicators and how this has determined the practice of forest management, taken here to be the management of forested lands and of all ecosystems present on such lands. Later chapters are more practical in focus, concentrating on the management of the many values associated with forests. Overall the book provides a major new synthesis which will serve as a textbook for undergraduates of forestry as well as those from related disciplines such as ecology or geography who are taking a course in forests or natural resource management. |
criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management: Scaling National Criteria and Indicators to the Local Level Working Group on Criteria and Indicators for the Conservation and Sustainable Management of Temperate and Boreal Forests. Technical Advisory Committee, Canadian Forest Service. Science Branch, 2001 The issue of scale of data must be addressed if forest managers are to minimize errors when data collected at one organizational level are used to estimate parameters at another. This paper discusses the following issues concerning scale: the issues of scale regarding the collection & aggregation of data at the subnational & national levels; the effect of scale on the interpretation of data; and the implications of the periodicity of nationally collected data on subnational application of criteria & indicators of sustainable forest management. The paper also provides examples from several countries on mechanisms for the development, identification, and implementation of subnational indicators of sustainable forest management that can be linked to national indicators. |

criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management: People Managing Forests Carol J.P Colfer, Yvonne Byron, 2010-09-30 How do we extend the 'conservation ethic' to include the cultural links between local populations and their physical environments? Can considerations of human capital be incorporated into the definition and measurement of sustainability in managed forests? Can forests be managed in a manner that fulfills traditional goals for ecological integrity while also addressing the well-being of its human residents? In this groundbreaking work, an international team of investigators apply a diverse range of social science methods to focus on the interests of the stakeholders living in the most intimate proximity to managed forests. Using examples from North America, Asia, Africa, and Latin America, they explore the overlapping systems that characterize the management of tropical forests. People Managing Forests builds on criteria and indicators first tested by the editors and their colleagues in the mid-1990s. The researchers address topics such as intergenerational access to resources, gender relations and forest utilization, and equity in both forest-rich and forest-poor contexts. A copublication of Resources for the Future (RFF) and the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR). |

criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management: Criteria And Indicators For Sustainable Forest Management Anna Powar, 2008 India is a growing economic power and is expected to grow at a sustained annual average rate of 7-8 % in first leg upto the end of current decade and at the rates of nearing 10% by the later period of the year 2010. At this critical phase of its development, the resilience of this democratic nation remains in its commitment towards sustainable development, and economic prosperity without damaging the environmental and natural fabric of the nation, which is necessary for the well being of its diverse masses. However, sizable proportion of population is dependent on natural resources including forests. Under the changing scenario of economic, socio-cultural and developmental scene, ensuring the sustainability of natural resources particularly the availability of limited forest resources becomes a challenge for the sector. Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) becomes the necessity for the country looking to the dependency of rural poor on the forests for their livelihood. SFM incorporates the technical, ecological and economic aspects of the forestry as well as addresses the socio-economic and livelihoods of forest dwelling communities. Criteria and Indicators (C&I) approach being adopted by as many as 159 countries for achieving SFM. The C&I framework helps to define the SFM and continuously monitor the various interventions made to improve the forests. The book is devoted on this important aspect of the forestry sector of India and it is the first attempt of its kind on the theoretical and practical aspects of C&I for SFM. This book has made an attempt to help young persons who are studying SFM and other forestry subjects at college or universities to understand the concept and upgrade their knowledge on the subject. Throughout the book the complex subject has been made simple to understand. Part I gives an overview of the SFM, C&I for SFM in India. Part II describes the Biodiversity conservation and sustainability, Part III devoted to Economic valuation of forest resources, giving note of existing system of forest resource accounting and distortion in it and also on the proposed forest resource accounting suiting to forestry situation in India. Part IV to VI discusses the issues of Forest certification and need, Forest monitoring and evaluation system, and National strategy for SFM. |

criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management: Forests in Landscapes Stewart Maginnis, Jeffrey A Sayer, 2013-06-17 At last a really useful book telling us how all the rhetoric about ecosystem approaches and sustainable forest management is being translated into practical solutions on the ground CLAUDE MARTIN, WWF INTERNATIONAL For too long, foresters have seen forests as logs waiting to be turned into something useful. This book demonstrates that forests in fact have multiple values, and managing them as ecosystems will bring more benefits to a greater cross-section of the public JEFFREY A. MCNEELY, CHIEF SCIENTIST, IUCN This book demonstrates that [ecosystem approaches and sustainable forest management] are neither alternative methods of forest management nor are they simply complicated ways of saying the same thing. They are both emerging concepts for more integrated and holistic ways of managing forests within larger landscapes in ways that optimize benefits to all stakeholders ACHIM STEINER AND IAN JOHNSON, FROM THE FOREWORD Recent innovations in Sustainable Forest Management and Ecosystem Approaches are resulting in forests increasingly being managed as part of the broader social-ecological systems in which they exist. Forests in Landscapes reviews changes that have occurred in forest management in recent decades. Case studies from Europe, Canada, the United States, Russia, Australia, the Congo and Central America provide a wealth of international examples of innovative practices. Cross-cutting chapters examine the political ecology and economics of forest management, and review the information needs and the use and misuse of criteria and indicators to achieve broad societal goals for forests. A concluding chapter draws out the key lessons of changes in forest management in recent decades and sets out some thoughts for the future. This book is a must-read for practitioners, researchers and policy makers concerned with forests and land use. It contains lessons for all those concerned with forests as sources of people's livelihoods and as part of rural landscapes. Published with IUCN and PROFOR |

criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management: Development and Testing of a Criteria and Indicators System for Sustainable Forest Management at the Local Level Thorsten Mrosek, 2005-01-01 The concept of criteria and indicators (C&I) for sustainable forest management (SFM) is suitable for defining, measuring and assessing sustainability in forestry. Within this study, the concept was developed further to a C&I system for application at the local level and tested as a case study at the Haliburton Forest & Wild Life Reserve Ltd. in Canada. The research involved: development of a generic set of local level C&I, identification of verifiers and norms, field testing the C&I, development of indicator measurement databases, assessment of the state of the forest and its management, and the application of adaptive management procedures. Based on the generic C&I system for SFM and the comprehensive field test, the study provides a model for evaluating sustainability in the management of temperate forests around the world. |

criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management: No Timber Without Trees Duncan Poore, 2013-11-05 Much of the world's tropical timber is still supplied from natural forest, but under current systems of management the forests are rapidly becoming exhausted. Unless management practices change to become genuinely sustainable, neither the forests nor the essential contribution of the timber industry to many economies will survive. Duncan Poore reviews the extent to which natural forests are already being sustainably managed for timber production, and looks at how these practices can be enlarged. He places management for timber in the wider context of tropical forest conservation and outlines a strategy for further action. Thoroughly researched and accessibly written, this book will be useful for everyone working or interested in the subject of tropical forests. Foreword by Dato Dr B.C.Y.
