Originally dedicated to an all-black student body that was focused on studying the ministry and education, today the school welcomes students of all races to a full range of liberal-arts studies. The extraordinary history of the school was first explored in 1917's *History of Morehouse College,* written by the then-dean of the college. From its founding and early presidents to the roster of illustrious alumni and their work through the early years of the 20th century, this is an important document of African-American history, and includes the school's original charter and lists of students and graduates from 1871 through 1916. African-American author and educator BENJAMIN GRIFFITH BRAWLEY (1882-1939) wrote extensively on black culture.

  denise watts hisd: Inspecting Jews Laurence Roth, 2004 Inthis book, Laurence Roth argues that the popular genre of Jewish detective stories offers new insights into the construction of ethnic and religious identity. Roth frames his study with the concept of kosher hybridity to look at the complex process of mediation between Jewish and American culture in which Jewish writers voice the desire to be both different from and yet the same as other Americans. He argues that the detective story, located at the intersection of narrative and popular culture in modern America, examines the need for order in a disorderly society, and thus offers a window into the negotiation of Jewish identity differing from that of literary fiction. The writers of these popular cultural texts, which are informed by contradiction and which thrive on intended and unintended ironies, formulate idioms for American Jewish identities that intentionally and unintentionally create social, ethnic, and religious syntheses in American Jewish life. Roth examines stories about American Jewish detectives--including Harry Kemelman's Rabbi Small, Faye Kellerman's Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus, Stuart Kaminsky's Abe Lieberman, and Rochelle Krich's Jessica Drake--not only as a genre of literature but also as a reflection of contemporary acculturation in the American Jewish popular arts.

Levchenko, Mr.Jing Zhang, 2012-03-01 This paper evaluates the global welfare impact of China's trade integration and technological change in a quantitative Ricardian-Heckscher-Ohlin model implemented on 75 countries. We simulate two alternative productivity growth scenarios: a balanced one in which China's productivity grows at the same rate in each sector, and an unbalanced one in which China's comparative disadvantage sectors catch up disproportionately faster to the world productivity frontier. Contrary to a well-known conjecture (Samuelson, 2004), the large majority of countries in the sample, including the developed ones, experience an order of magnitude larger welfare gains when China's productivity growth is biased towards its comparative disadvantage sectors. We demonstrate both analytically and quantitatively that this finding is driven by the inherently multilateral nature of world trade. As a separate but related exercise we quantify the worldwide welfare gains from China's trade integration.

Jacob, 2018 In 1971, with an advertisement in the June issue of Artforum, Diane Arbus announced the offering of her limited-edition portfolio, A box of ten photographs. At the time of her death, one month later, only four were sold. Two were purchased from Arbus by Richard Avedon; another by Jasper Johns. The last of the four was purchased by Bea Feitler, art director at Harper's Bazaar. Arbus signed the prints in all four sets, and each was accompanied by an overlying vellum sheet inscribed with an extended caption. For Feitler, Arbus added an eleventh photograph. This is the first publication to focus exclusively on A box of ten photographs, using the eleven-print set that Arbus assembled for Feitler. It was acquired by the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C., in 1986, and is the only one of the four portfolios completed and sold by Arbus that is publicly held. This publication examines this unique object as the sole body of images selected by Arbus herself, and considers its legacy as a key document of her enduring impact on contemporary photographic practice.
