A combination of pre-exiting conditions, catalysts and operational drivers caused the cathartic 1954 French defeat. Pre-conditions included the illegitimacy of the colonial regime, repression that polarised nationalist sentiment. Economically, pernicious terms of trade suppressed industrialisation but oiled speculation until suddenly reversed by devaluation in 1953 that reflected financial disengagement by France but increased American involvement. Vacillating metropolitan and the dubious colonial regime of the ‘night club’ Emperor, Bảo Đại, fuelled political instability. Militarily, after the disastrous evacuation of the RC4 in 1950, Việt Minh men and supplies poured across the Chinese frontier. In 1954, financial constraints and the looming international peace conference catalysed Navarre, the new French commander, to gamble on a battle of attrition. He bet that the Việt Minh would be unable drag artillery to the remote jungle outpost of Diên Biên Phú, but he underestimated their determination, strength, and adaptability. In early December partisans resented the bungled evacuation of Lai Châu. The entrenched camp’s defences were inadequate and neither infantry sorties nor napalm suppressed VM artillery in the surrounding hills. The French aero-logistical sub-system was overstretched, and significant parachute supplies fell into enemy hands. Navarre scattered his reserves on a futile and remote side show, Operation Atlante. delf b1 2019: 언제나 나로 살아갈 수 있다면 김원곤, 2024-07-10 “나는 날마다 나답게 익어갑니다.” 다들 소리 높여 ‘나다움’을 말하는 시대다. 요란하고 번잡한 세상에서 남들이 뭐라고 하든 자신의 고유한 색깔과 삶의 가치를 지켜가며 살고 싶다는 열망일 테다. 그런데 시간이 지날수록, 나이가 들수록 그런 바람은 보통 퇴색하고 만다. 고집은 세지지만, 그간 만들어왔던 정체성은 빠르게 무너져내린다. 내일을 기대하며 자기다움을 가꿔가기보다 과거의 성취를 뒤적이며 추억 속에 머물고자 한다. 《언제나 나로 살아갈 수 있다면》을 쓴 김원곤 서울대학교 명예교수의 행보는 이와 정반대다. 정년퇴임 후에 한층 더 자기다움을 멋지게 펼쳐 보인다. 오랫동안 해온 외국어 공부의 정점을 맛보고 싶다는 마음으로 4년간 페루, 프랑스, 일본, 대만으로 어학연수를 떠나는가 하면 상황이 여의치 않은 외국에서도 오랫동안 해온 운동을 놓지 않고 지속해간다. 수동적으로 그저 시간을 흘려보내지 않고 적극적으로 자기 앞의 시간을 만들어가는 동시에 긍정적인 영향력을 주변에 흩뿌린다. 일명 ‘파워 시니어’의 삶의 자세다. 도전의식과 의지만 뚜렷하면 나이와 상관없이 자기다움을 가꿔갈 수 있다. 그럴 때 인생이 더욱 재미있고 값져지는 것은 당연하다. 인생 후반을 누구보다도 나답게 살아가는 그의 행보를 따라가다 보면 각자의 인생을 더욱 알록달록 풍성하게 채워가고 싶다는 의욕이 솟아날 것이다. |
