dawn of wonder the wakening book 1: Tales of Nevèrÿon Samuel R. Delany, 2014-01-07 Hugo and Nebula Award–winning author Samuel R. Delany’s epic fantasy—the first in a series—explores power, gender, and the nature of civilization. A boy of the bustling, colorful docks of port Kolhari, during a political coup, fifteen-year-old Gorgik, once his parents are killed, is taken a slave and transported to the government obsidian mines at the foot of the Faltha mountains. When, in the savagely primitive land of Nevèrÿon, finally he wins his freedom, Gorgik is ready to lead a rebellion against the rulers of this barely civilized land. His is the through-story that, now in the background, now in the foreground, connects these first five stories, in Tales of Nevèrÿon—and, indeed, all the eleven stories, novellas, and novels that comprise Delany’s epic fantasy series, Return to Nevèrÿon, where we can watch civilization first develop money, writing, labor, and that grounding of all civilizations since: capital itself. In these sagas of barbarism, new knowledge, and sex, you’ll find far more than in most sword-and-sorcery. They are an epic feat of language, an ironic analysis of the foundations of civilization, and a reminder that no weapon is more powerful than a well-honed legend. This “eminently readable and gorgeously entertaining” (The Washington Post Book World) novel reads “as if Umberto Eco had written about Conan the Barbarian” (USA Today). This ebook features an illustrated biography of Samuel R. Delany including rare images from his early career. |

Robinson, 2021-05-11 A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect. |

dawn of wonder the wakening book 1: The Eye of Argon Jim Theis, Weinstein Lee, 2021-04-30 This is not a hoax. Jim Theis was a real person, who wrote The Eye of Argon in all seriousness as a teenager, and published it in a fanzine, Osfan in 1970. But the story did not pass into the oblivion that awaits most amateur fiction. Instead, a miracle happened, and transcribed and photocopied texts began to circulate in science fiction circles, gaining a wide and incredulous audience among both professionals and fans. It became the ultimate samizdat, an underground classic, and for more than thirty years it has been the subject of midnight readings at conventions, as thousands have come to appreciate the negative genius of this amazing Ed Wood of prose. |
dawn of wonder the wakening book 1: All Quiet on the Western Front Erich Maria Remarque, 2025-01-01 “All Quiet on the Western Front,” by Erich Maria Remarque, is a poignant narrative that captures the profound effects of World War I on a generation stripped of its innocence and vitality. Through the eyes of the young German soldier Paul Bäumer, Remarque unfolds the harrowing realities of war on the front lines—where the only certainties are death, despair, and the relentless erosion of one’s humanity. As Paul and his comrades navigate the brutal chaos of trench warfare, they are bound by a brotherhood forged under fire, clinging to fleeting moments of joy and solace amidst the omnipresent specter of mortality. This seminal work is not merely a novel about war; it is a powerful indictment of the senseless brutality of conflict and the incalculable cost of violence. Remarque’s unflinching portrayal of the soldiers’ experiences serves as a universal reminder of the tragedies that unfold when nations choose war as a means to settle disputes. “All Quiet on the Western Front” remains as relevant today as it was upon its publication, continuing to offer profound insights into the personal and collective consequences of warfare, and a poignant commentary on the loss of youth and innocence in the crucible of battle. |

dawn of wonder the wakening book 1: The Choice of Magic Michael G. Manning, 2019-08-16 The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite-a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses. But this will change, for the greatest power comes with knowledge, and the deeper teachings of wizardry have not been utterly lost. The last wizard of the old tradition still survives in solitude, nursing tired grudges and waiting for death. His passing might have gone unnoticed, but for the imposition of a youth too stubborn to accept his refusal to take an apprentice. With a new student comes new hope, and that hope has caused old powers to stir again. That the world will change is inevitable, but the shape of the future is anything but certain. |

dawn of wonder the wakening book 1: Fortitude Hugh Walpole, 2005-01-01 Do you really want me, Peter? He didn't speak but his whole body turned towards her, answering her question. Because I am yours entirely. I became yours that day when your hand touched mine. I wasn't sure before-I knew then- He looked at her. He saw her, he thought for the first time.... -from Fortitude The first great success of one of the most popular novelists of the early 20th century, Fortitude (1913) is the author's own favorite work. A romantic novel with a fairy-tale air, it is the life story of Peter Wescott, who very navely believed in almost everything, as Walpole himself described him. As a quiet, polite child, Peter stoically endures horrific beatings from his father; as a dreamy young man, Peter finds himself swept away into reverie by the titles of books (he doesn't even need to read them) and escapes into his own fiction when grief and tragedy strike. With early hints of the supernatural and the psychological suspense that would infuse Walpole's later work, this is an important formative work of a writer whose work deserves to be seen anew. British writer SIR HUGH WALPOLE (1884-1941) was born in New Zealand and moved to England as a child. His works include novels, short stories, biographies, plays, and screenplays. |

Fiery, outspoken and often wickedly funny, this candid account of one woman's life as a sex worker in Kerala became a bestseller when it was first published in Malayalam. Nalini Jameela, who takes her name from both Hindu and Muslim traditions, worked as a child in the clay mines. She has been a wife, mother, successful business woman and social activist ? as well as a sex worker ? at different stages of her life.
