charismatic catholic church in kenya: Reclaiming the Catholic Charismatic Renewal (CCR) for the Kenya Catholic Church Through the Ignatian Lens of Creative Fidelity in Mission Michael Mungai Ndung'u, 2016 Some of the contemporary challenges experienced by the Kenyan Catholic Church and society include: attack of some people by malevolent powers and spirits, defections of some Catholics to Pentecostal Churches, and shortage of Catholic clergy. The Kenya Catholic Charismatic Renewal, CCR, through its ministries of praise and worship, and healing and deliverance, is responding to these challenges. This thesis is born out an attempt to make the Kenya CCR better understood and appreciated. This paper uses the Igantian lens of creative fidelity in mission to reclaim the Kenya CCR for the Kenyan Church. It argues that in carrying out its mission, the Kenya CCR is both creative and faithful in the sense of the Ignatian creative fidelity in mission. The principle of Ignatian creative fidelity purses meaningful ingenuity and faithfulness to Christ in doing mission. The Kenya CCR has been faithful in its mission in three senses; faithful to its Kenyan African identity, faithful to its received charism of the Holy Spirit, and faithful to its Catholic identity. This paper will expound the praise and worship, and healing and deliverance CCR ministries. These ministries constitute identifying characteristics of the traditional African culture and the Tradition of the Catholic Church. The CCR is faithful in retrieving these ministries, and is creative in appropriating them to the contemporary Kenyan Catholic Church context. Lack of these ministries or lack of their adequate appreciation within the Catholic Church has led many Catholics to defect to Pentecostal Churches as they pursue healing and deliverance from sickness and afflictions by malevolent powers. These minitries are attracting back to the Church Catholics who had defected. They also make the Catholic liturgies more lively and meaningful. Additionally, they provide lay ministers who mitigates adverse pastoral effects caused by shortage of Catholic clergy in Kenya. This paper proposes dialogue, discernment and formation as the way to handle emerging tensions that affect the Kenya CCR. |

Cooke, 2015-11-10 Two important dynamics have driven political and social change in sub-Saharan Africa during the past 25 years. New religious trends have emerged within the main faiths of Islam and Christianity, in particular the emergence of more charismatic, assertive forms of religious expression. Meanwhile, political space has opened in scores of countries as one-party rule has given way to a process of democratization, yet to be completed. Based on their field work in each country, the authors examine the various ways in which religious actors have chosen to engage with the state. They also consider how governments and political actors respond to, and seek to manage, these interactions. |
