cmsgt william gurney: Symptoms of Unknown Origin Clifton K. Meador, 2005-04-22 For years after graduating from medical school, Dr. Clifton K. Meador assumed that symptoms of the body, when obviously not imaginary, indicate a disease of the body--something to be treated with drugs, surgery, or other traditional means. But, over several decades, as he saw patients with clear symptoms but no discernable disease, he concluded that his own assumptions were too narrow and, indeed, that the underlying basis for much of clinical medicine was severely limited. Recounting a series of fascinating case studies, Meador shows in this book how he came to reject a strict adherence to the prevailing biomolecular model of disease and its separation of mind and body. He studied other theories and approaches--George Engel's biopsychosocial model of disease, Michael Balint's study of physicians as pharmacological agents--and adjusted his practice accordingly to treat what he called nondisease. He had to retool, learn new and more in-depth interviewing and listening techniques, and undergo what Balint termed a slight but significant change in personality. In chapters like The Woman Who Believed She Was a Man and The Diarrhea of Agnes, Meador reveals both the considerable harm that can result from wrong diagnoses of nonexistent diseases and the methods he developed to help patients with chronic symptoms not defined by a medical disease. Throughout the book, he recommends subsequent studies to test his observations, and he urges full application of the scientific method to the doctor-patient relationship, pointing out that few objective studies of these all-important interactions have ever been done.

U.S. ARMY AEROMEDICAL EVACUATION CRITICAL CARE FLIGHT PARAMEDIC STANDARD MEDICAL OPERATING GUIDELINES - CY23 Version Published January 2023, 318 pages 2. TCCC Guidelines for Medical Personnel - 15 December 2021, 19 pages 3. JTS Clinical Practice Guidelines, 2,260 total pages - current as of 19 September 2023: INTRODUCTION The SMOG continues to go through significant improvements with each release as a result of the collaboration of Emergency Medicine professionals, experienced Flight Medics, Aeromedical Physician Assistants, Critical Care Nurses, and Flight Surgeons. There has been close coordination in the development of these guidelines by the Joint Trauma System, and the Defense Committees on Trauma. Our shared goal is to ensure the highest quality en route care possible and to standardize care across all evacuation and emergency medical pre-hospital units. It is our vision that all of these enhancements and improvements will advance en route care across the services and the Department of Defense. Unit medical trainers and medical directors should evaluate Critical Care Flight Paramedics (CCFP) ability to follow and execute the medical instructions herein. These medical guidelines are intended to guide CCFPs and prehospital professionals in the response and management of emergencies and the care and treatment of patients in both garrison and combat theater environments. Unit medical providers are not expected to employ these guidelines blindly. Unit medical providers are expected to manipulate and adjust these guidelines to their unit’s mission and medical air crew training / experience. Medical directors or designated supervising physicians should endorse these guidelines as a baseline, appropriately adjust components as needed, and responsibly manage individual unit medical missions within the scope of practice of their Critical Care Flight Paramedics, Enroute Critical Care Nurses, and advanced practice aeromedical providers. The medication section of this manual is provided for information purposes only. CCFPs may administer medications only as listed in the guidelines unless their medical director and/or supervising physician orders a deviation. Other medications may be added, so long as the unit supervising physician and/or medical director approves them. This manual also serves as a reference for physicians providing medical direction and clinical oversight to the CCFP. Treatment direction, which is more appropriate to the patient’s condition than the guideline, should be provided by the physician as long as the CCFP scope of practice is not exceeded. Any medical guideline that is out of date or has been found to cause further harm will be updated or deleted immediately. The Medical Evacuation Concepts and Capabilities Division (MECCD) serves as the managing editor of the SMOG and are responsible for content updates, managing the formal review process, and identifying review committee members for the annual review. The Standard Medical Operating Guidelines are intended to provide medical procedural guidance and is in compliment to other Department of Defense and Department of the Army policies, regulatory and doctrinal guidance. Nothing herein overrides or supersedes laws, rules, regulation or policies of the United States, DoD or DA.

Marrett, a former test pilot for aviator Howard Hughes, separates fact from fiction to tell the inside story of the genius who set flight speed records in the 1930s and went on to develop some of America’s most famous aircraft and weapons. The author draws on his wealth of experiences and those of other Hughes confidants to take readers inside Hughes’s complex and clandestine world. Marrett integrates stories of Hughes the ace pilot with Hughes the designer and businessman who became America’s first billionaire.
cmsgt william gurney: Cheating Death George J. Marrett, 2016-12-06 They flew low and slow, at treetop level, at night, in monsoons, and in point-blank range of enemy guns and missiles. They were missions no one else wanted, but the ones all other pilots prayed for when shot down. Flying the World War II-vintage Douglas A-1 Skyraider, a single-engine, propeller-driven relic in a war of “fast-movers,” these intrepid US Air Force pilots, call sign Sandy, risked their lives with every mission to rescue thousands of downed Navy and Air Force pilots. With a flashback memory and a style all his own, George J. Marrett depicts some of the most dangerous aerial combat of any war. The thrilling rescue of “Streetcar 304” and William Jones's selfless act of heroism that earned him the Medal of Honor are but two of the compelling tales he recounts. Here too are the courages Jolly Green Giant helicopter crews, parajumpers, and forward air controllers who worked with the Sandys over heavily defended jungles and mountains well behind enemy lines. Passionate, mordantly witty, and filled with heart-pounding adrenaline, Cheating Death reads like the finest combat fiction, but it is the real deal: its heroes, cowards, jokers, and casualties all have names and faces readers will find difficult to forget.

The Redshirt introduces Miles Furling, a young man who is convinced he was placed on earth to play football. Deep in the closet, he sees the sport as a means of gaining a permanent foothold in a culture that would otherwise reject him. Still, Miles's body lags behind his ambitions, and recruiters tell him he is not big enough to compete at the top level. His dreams come true when a letter arrives from King College. The elite southern school boasts one of the best educations in America and one of the worst Division One football programs. King football is filled with obscure, ignored players like Miles—which is why he and the sports world in general are shocked when the country's top recruit, Reshawn McCoy, also chooses to attend the college. As brilliant a student as he is a player, the intensely private Reshawn refuses to explain why he chose King over other programs. Miles is as baffled as everyone else, and less than thrilled when he winds up rooming with the taciturn Reshawn. Initially at odds with each other, the pair become confidants as the win-at-all-costs program makes brutal demands on their time and bodies. When their true selves and the identities that have been imposed on them by the game collide, both young men are forced to make life-changing choices.

The book describes the nature and scope of selected team teaching programs; the manner in which such programs can be administered; the potential impact of team teaching on a developing curriculum; the role of faculty and students who constitute the teaching-learning team; the particular housing requirements of team teaching programs; and finally, the limitations and future prospects of this emerging concept. In the following chapters frequent reference is made to the philosophy, program, and methodology of Boston University's College of Basic Studies, where a team system was first developed in 1949 and where an entire collegiate two-year program of studies functions on a team teaching plan. This College's extensive experience with team teaching has made possible refinements which may interest those seeking to broaden their understanding of the potential role and function of team teaching in higher education.* Rich in case studies, examples, and in-chapter elements that focus on the challenges of launching and operating a technology venture* In-depth examination of intellectual property development, valuation, deal structuring, and equity preservation, issues of most relevance to technology start-ups* Extensive discussion of technology management and continuous innovation as a competitive advantage* Addresses the issue of leading, managing, motivating, and compensating technical workers* More time on the fundamentals of marketing and selling, as these are elements of entrepreneurshipcommonly most neglected by engineers and scientists

cmsgt william gurney: The Directory of the Armed Forces Radio Service Series , 1999-10-30 This directory details the output of transcriptions from the Armed Forces Radio Service from the beginning in 1942 up to 1967. Since many official papers of the early days are no longer available, the information was gathered from many private sources. The range of programs the AFRS covered was immense. Particularly during the war years the accent was on entertainment. Popular and classical music and comedy and drama shows were rebroadcast over AFRS stations all over the world. The AFRS also produced many programs designed to inform and educate. This directory attempts to present the complete range of series the AFRS transmitted. Collectors and followers of popular, country or series music and of drama or comedy shows will appreciate the short description of the AFRS shows, complete with cast names and issues and recording dates, that comprise the entries. The entries are organized by series and include the Libraries series, H-Series, Network Series, R-Series, and Assigned Matrix Numbers. An appendix of non-AFRS transcriptions is included along with a bibliography for further research.

cmsgt william gurney: American Civil-Military Relations Suzanne C. Nielsen, Don M. Snider, 2009-10-05 American Civil-Military Relations offers the first comprehensive assessment of the subject since the publication of Samuel P. Huntington’s The Soldier and the State. Using this seminal work as a point of departure, experts in the fields of political science, history, and sociology ask what has been learned and what more needs to be investigated in the relationship between civilian and military sectors in the 21st century. Leading scholars—such as Richard Betts, Risa Brooks, James Burk, Michael Desch, Peter Feaver, Richard Kohn, Williamson Murray, and David Segal—discuss key issues, including: • changes in officer education since the end of the Cold War • shifting conceptions of military expertise in response to evolving operational and strategic requirements • increased military involvement in high-level politics • the domestic and international contexts of U.S. civil-military relations. The first section of the book provides contrasting perspectives of American civil-military relations within the last five decades. The next section addresses Huntington’s conception of societal and functional imperatives and their influence on the civil-military relationship. Following sections examine relationships between military and civilian leaders and describe the norms and practices that should guide those interactions. What is clear from the essays in this volume is that the line between civil and military expertise and responsibility is not that sharply drawn, and perhaps given the increasing complexity of international security issues, it should not be. When forming national security policy, the editors conclude, civilian and military leaders need to maintain a respectful and engaged dialogue. Essential reading for those interested in civil-military relations, U.S. politics, and national security policy.
