Intesa latamente come senso complessivo di pienezza e di autorealizzazione del carattere, essa trae origine dal concetto aristotelico di eudaimonia e coinvolge molti aspetti della vita, associandosi ma non identificandosi con termini come quelli di felicità e di benessere. In particolare, gli studi recenti tendono a identificare sempre più la fioritura morale con un processo di tipo progressivo e non con un’acquisizione compiuta e permanente. In questo scenario, molte sono le questioni che la tematica solleva: come si può definire, comprendere e promuovere la fioritura morale? Riguarda solo o eminentemente la sfera soggettiva oppure può essere estesa alla collettività e all’ambito dei diritti fondamentali? Quanto è importante la dimensione della “soddisfazione sociale”? È quindi inevitabile che In movimento, la sua autobiografia, sia innanzitutto una rassegna di passioni, descritte con la lucidità dello scienziato e l'audacia dello psiconauta, con la schiettezza del diagnosta e il gusto per la digressione di un dotto seicentesco. E sarà un piacere, per i lettori di Sacks, sentirlo parlare di sé: dell'ossessione per le moto e il sollevamento pesi, della dipendenza dalle amfetamine, del lacerante rapporto con il fratello schizofrenico e con la madre (il «più profondo e forse, in un certo senso, più vero della mia vita»), di quando disintegrò per l'ammirazione unita alla frustrazione un libro di Aleksandr Lurija, il fondatore della neuropsicologia e di quella «scienza romantica» a cui sarebbe sempre rimasto fedele.
