Excerpt: The Borderlands aren’t like anywhere else. Don’t try to smuggle a phone or any other piece of technology over the wall that marks the Border — unless you enjoy a fireworks display in your backpack. (Ballpoint pens are okay.) There are elves, harpies, and — best of all as far as Elliot is concerned — mermaids. What’s your name? Serene. Serena? Elliot asked. Serene, said Serene. My full name is Serene-Heart-in-the-Chaos-of-Battle. Elliot’s mouth fell open. That is badass. Elliot? Who’s Elliot? Elliot is thirteen years old. He’s smart and just a tiny bit obnoxious. Sometimes more than a tiny bit. When his class goes on a field trip and he can see a wall that no one else can see, he is given the chance to go to school in the Borderlands. It turns out that on the other side of the wall, classes involve a lot more weaponry and fitness training and fewer mermaids than he expected. On the other hand, there’s Serene-Heart-in-the-Chaos-of-Battle, an elven warrior who is more beautiful than anyone Elliot has ever seen, and then there’s her human friend Luke: sunny, blond, and annoyingly likeable. There are lots of interesting books. There’s even the chance Elliot might be able to change the world. Chapter illustrations by Casey Nowak.

brave chords sara: Live Sustainably Now Karl Coplan, 2019-12-31 Any realistic response to climate change will require reducing carbon emissions to a sustainable level. Yet even people who already recognize that the climate is the most urgent issue facing the planet struggle to understand their individual responsibilities. Is it even possible to live with a sustainable carbon footprint in modern American society—much less to live well? What are the options for those who would like to make climate awareness part of their daily lives but don’t want to go off the grid or become a hermit? In Live Sustainably Now, Karl Coplan shares his personal journey of attempting to cut back on carbon without giving up the amenities of a suburban middle-class lifestyle. Coplan chronicles the joys and challenges of a year on a carbon budget—kayaking to work, hunting down electric-car charging stations, eating a Mediterranean-style diet, and enjoying plenty of travel on weekends and vacations while avoiding long-distance flights. He explains how to set a personal carbon cap and measure your actual footprint, with his own results detailed in monthly diary entries. Presenting the pros and cons of different energy, transportation, and lifestyle options, Live Sustainably Now shows that there does not have to be a trade-off between the ethical obligation to maintain a sustainable carbon footprint and the belief that life should be fulfilling and fun. This powerful and persuasive book provides an individual-level blueprint for a carbon-sustainable tweak to the American dream.

brave chords sara: Getting Off Jonathan Reiss, 2017 Fiction. You can almost make just enough money to buy heroin every day by jacking off for people on the Internet. This is America. That makes you an entrepreneur. But how do you stop being human? Is it possible? What if you can't? What then? In this relentless, heart-shattering first novel, Jonathan Reiss gently takes your hand and leads you on a grand insider's tour of the nicest parts of hell, where giving up on everything is extremely hard work. GETTING OFF is raunchy, sad, weird, smart, and riotously fun to read. Gross sex, drug shakes, LA, scary cults--what more can you ask for? Reiss has written a refreshingly dark book, with pretty much zero redemption for his characters but plenty of attention and love.--Paula Bomer As soon as I read the first paragraph I knew I wasn't going to be able to sleep till I'd finished. Because it was too real. Novels have endings, thank God.--Stoya Jonathan Reiss is a real rocket ship of a writer. Wild and sad, GETTING OFF pops with complicated worlds of internet sex, dreams, and loss. This is a book full of web cam hook-ups and people wanting to be fucked by the ocean. It's a book asking you to show your chest and prove you're not a cop, even though we all are.--Scott McClanahan Beautifully written, terribly sad, and frightfully funny. It's an experience almost so painful that you can't turn away from it, and it doesn't let up until it's finished. I loved it.--Sean Bonnette, cofounder of AJJ A surprisingly affectionate novel...Reiss's sympathy for Simon--not to mention his sense of humor--carries his readers along on a trip that could have been tedious in the hands of a lesser storyteller. Neither Reiss nor Simon wallows in Simon's misery. Simon treats his sex work matter-of-factly; Reiss refuses to make jerking off for other men a straight guy's vision of absolute hell...Reiss sees the harm where it belongs--not in sexwork, but in the more overarching despair and primal self-loathing that causes and sustains most junkies' despair and self-destruction.--Ed Sikov Much like its predecessors, such as Donald Goines's Dopefiend and Irvine Welsh's Trainspotting, Reiss doesn't shy away from showing the complete squalor a broke heroin addict lives in. . . . both disgusting and engaging, entertaining, and full of excellent writing...An excellent debut.--Ben Arzate

Naught in the world could touch her, high in her lofty place among princes of the stars and potentates of the mountains. Starlit flowers wove her blankets and wholesome creatures befriended her; she rested her head upon daisies in the evening and clothed herself in grasses of the morning. She was the Wild Miss. She was Liberty. Far from the verdant lands of Liberty's freedom, across sundry wonders of her sweet time, an evil ancient as the days grew in the darkest corner of Whenua.   brave chords sara: Regala Healing Paulina Van, 2021-09-26 These poems are addicting! The 100 healing narratives which emerged in the form of anaphoric, lyrical poetry will entice you to read each one until you are intoxicated, moved, and soothed by them. The poems are straight from Van's heart and rooted in unspoken life experiences. There is no pretentiousness of passion, no avoidance of truth, and no prevention of feelings. The poems are all about self-realization, self-feeling, self-care, self-beliefs, self-vulnerability, self-consciousness, self-changing, self-improvement, self-control, self-confidence, and ultimately self-love that relies on God's hand. One cannot help but be moved by reading these poems and drawing their energy of strength and love. Van trusts that sharing herself with unabated transparency may potentiate your healing as it has hers. Although these poems are rooted in her personal life experiences, they might also call forth your own feelings and truths. You, too, can open yourself to the internal conversation these poems might spark, even-or especially-if you can't see where that conversation might lead.

brave chords sara: High School Sara Quin, Tegan Quin, 2020-10-06 NEW YORK TIMES AND NATIONAL BESTSELLER First loves, first songs, and the drugs and reckless high school exploits that fueled them—meet music icons Tegan and Sara as you’ve never known them before in this intimate and raw account of their formative years. High School is the revelatory and unique coming-of-age story of Sara and Tegan Quin, identical twins from Calgary, Alberta, growing up in the height of grunge and rave culture in the ’90s, well before they became the celebrated musicians and global LGBTQ icons we know today. While grappling with their identity and sexuality, often alone, they also faced academic meltdown, their parents’ divorce, and the looming pressure of what might come after high school. Written in alternating chapters from both Tegan’s point of view and Sara’s, the book is a raw account of the drugs, alcohol, love, music, and friendships they explored in their formative years. A transcendent story of first loves and first songs, it captures the tangle of discordant and parallel memories of two sisters who grew up in distinct ways even as they lived just down the hall from one another. This is the origin story of Tegan and Sara.
brave chords sara: No Simple Highway Peter Richardson, 2015-01-20 An “entertaining cultural history” of the Grateful Dead, their devoted following—and the powerful reasons for their enduring appeal (Shelf Awareness). For almost three decades, the Grateful Dead was America’s most popular touring band. No Simple Highway is the first book to ask the simple question of why—and attempt to answer it. Drawing on new research, interviews, and a fresh supply of material from the Grateful Dead archives, Peter Richardson vividly recounts the Dead’s colorful history, adding new insight into everything from the Acid Tests to the band’s formation of their own record label to their massive late-career success, while probing the riddle of the Dead’s vast and durable appeal. Routinely caricatured by the mainstream media, the Grateful Dead are often portrayed as grizzled hippie throwbacks with a cult following of burned-out stoners. No Simple Highway corrects that impression, and reveals how they tapped into the yearnings of two generations for ecstasy, mobility, and community. “While Dead devotees will revel in the wealth of biographical details here, every reader interested in music and its social repercussions will find Richardson’s work both captivating and instructive.” —Booklist “Richardson writes with enthusiasm. . . . He paints the Dead as a utopian experiment in a long American tradition.” —Harper’s Magazine “[A] far-ranging look at the ultimate jam band in the acid-drenched context of their formative years.” —Kirkus Reviews

brave chords sara: Instruments and the Imagination Thomas L. Hankins, Robert J. Silverman, 2014-07-14 Thomas Hankins and Robert Silverman investigate an array of instruments from the seventeenth through the nineteenth century that seem at first to be marginal to science--magnetic clocks that were said to operate by the movements of sunflower seeds, magic lanterns, ocular harpsichords (machines that played different colored lights in harmonious mixtures), Aeolian harps (a form of wind chime), and other instruments of natural magic designed to produce wondrous effects. By looking at these and the first recording instruments, the stereoscope, and speaking machines, the authors show that scientific instruments first made their appearance as devices used to evoke wonder in the beholder, as in works of magic and the theater. The authors also demonstrate that these instruments, even though they were often tricks, were seen by their inventors as more than trickery. In the view of Athanasius Kircher, for instance, the sunflower clock was not merely a hoax, but an effort to demonstrate, however fraudulently, his truly held belief that the ability of a flower to follow the sun was due to the same cosmic magnetic influence as that which moved the planets and caused the rotation of the earth. The marvels revealed in this work raise and answer questions about the connections between natural science and natural magic, the meaning of demonstration, the role of language and the senses in science, and the connections among art, music, literature, and natural science.   brave chords sara: The Song of the Lark Willa Cather, 1915 A novelist and short-story writer, Willa Cather is today widely regarded as one of the foremost American authors of the twentieth century. Particularly renowned for the memorable women she created for such works as My Antonia and O Pioneers!, she pens the portrait of another formidable character in The Song of the Lark. This, her third novel, traces the struggle of the woman as artist in an era when a woman's role was far more rigidly defined than it is today. The prototype for the main character as a child and adolescent was Cather herself, while a leading Wagnerian soprano at the Metropolitan Opera (Olive Fremstad) became the model for Thea Kronborg, the singer who defies the limitations placed on women of her time and social station to become an international opera star. A coming-of-age-novel, important for the issues of gender and class that it explores, The Song of the Lark is one of Cather's most popular and lyrical works. Book jacket.

brave chords sara: Turning Pointe Chloe Angyal, 2021-05-04 A reckoning with one of our most beloved art forms, whose past and present are shaped by gender, racial, and class inequities—and a look inside the fight for its future Every day, in dance studios all across America, legions of little children line up at the barre to take ballet class. This time in the studio shapes their lives, instilling lessons about gender, power, bodies, and their place in the world both in and outside of dance. In Turning Pointe, journalist Chloe Angyal captures the intense love for ballet that so many dancers feel, while also grappling with its devastating shortcomings: the power imbalance of an art form performed mostly by women, but dominated by men; the impossible standards of beauty and thinness; and the racism that keeps so many people of color out of ballet. As the rigid traditions of ballet grow increasingly out of step with the modern world, a new generation of dancers is confronting these issues head on, in the studio and on stage. For ballet to survive the twenty-first century and forge a path into a more socially just future, this reckoning is essential.
