carl barks don rosa: Don Rosa - I Still Get Chills Alex Jakubowski, Don Rosa, Lois Lammerhuber, 2017 Don Rosa is one of the world?s most popular cartoonists. For over 20 years he kept up the duck universe of his idol Carl Barks with his stories about Scrooge McDuck, Donald Duck and the Beagle Boys Inc. He is adored for his detailed duck adventures. His biography, 'Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck', earned him immortality and an Eisner Award, the world?s most important comics prize.00But who is the man behind the ducks? I STILL GET CHILLS! knows the answers. It is published in honour of Don Rosa?s 66th and Scrooge McDuck?s 70th birthday. German public broadcast journalist, Alex Jakubowski, and Lois Lammerhuber, one of the best photographers of his generation, spent a lot of time with the star cartoonist on his fantastic, remote home in the wide reaches of Kentucky. Surrounded by one of the largest comics collections in North America, White Castle fast food memorabilia, amazing libraries of books, films and CDs, countless huge monitors, exquisite vintage cars and an enviable pinball collection, they talked for days in the artist?s studio, traced Don Rosa?s childhood on trips to Louisville and discovered the many facets of a man who has become almost as legendary as a passionate collector as he has for his art as a cartoonist.00And what?s more: Don Rosa himself lent a hand with this book, commenting on photos and drawings, creating typical Don Rosa quotes and turning it into a unique Don Rosa work. |
carl barks don rosa: Creation, Translation, and Adaptation in Donald Duck Comics Peter Cullen Bryan, 2021-05-17 This book examines the scope and nature of Donald Duck and his family's popularity in Germany, in contrast to the diminished role they play in America. This is achieved through examination of the respective fan communities, business practices, and universality of the characters. This work locates and understands the aspects of translation and adaptation that inform the spread of culture that have as yet been underexplored in the context of comic books. It represents a large-scale attempt to incorporate adaptation and translation studies into comics studies, through a lens of fan studies (used to examine both the American and German fan communities, as well as the work of Don Rosa). This work builds on the efforts of other scholars, including Janet Wasko and Illaria Meloni, while expanding the historical understanding of what might be the world’s best-selling comics. Peter Cullen Bryan is Lecturer at Pennsylvania State University, USA. His areas of study include American Studies, Intercultural Communications, and 21st Century American culture, emphasizing comic art and fan communities. His research has appeared in the Journal of Fandom Studies, The Journal of American Culture, and Popular Culture Studies Journal. He serves on the boards of the Mid-Atlantic Popular Culture Association and the Popular Culture Association, as well as Secretary for the Intercultural Communication section of the International Communication Association. |

carl barks don rosa: The Complete Carl Barks Index LARGE PRINT INDEX EDITION Kim Weston, 2017-03-07 The Complete Carl Barks Index LARGE PRINT INDEX EDITION is identical to the regular edition EXCEPT that the Index portion of the Book is printed in larger type. The regular edition index portion of the book is mostly 2 columns of 7-point type. The LARGE PRINT index is mostly single column 9-point type and is consequently almost 250 pages longer. The non-index text is mostly 10-point in all editions. The price of the 548 page LARGE PRINT edition is $39.95. The regular 304 page edition price is $34.95. A SPECIAL EDITION identical to the regular edition except for a few pages of color, instead of black and white, illustrations is by $59.95; In any of the editions, the book a comprehensive index and concordance of Carl Barks' comic book work. From 1942 until his retirement in 1966, Carl Barks was the most important writer and artist of Donald Duck and related comic books, including Uncle Scrooge, as well as the creator of Uncle Scrooge and many of the best-loved characters in the Duck comic books. So beloved and important was Carl Barks' work that from 1983 to 1990, Another Rainbow Publishing, founded by Bruce Hamilton, published The Carl Barks Library in 30 deluxe hardcover volumes reprinting all of Barks' Disney comic book work and as much other Disney related drawings and art Barks was involved with as possible. In addition to comic book work, it includes paintings, storyboard and animation drawings, model sheets, and drawings for fans, among other things. The Complete Carl Barks Index has over 29,000 lines of data in the Index. The index, which was always intended to cover all of Barks' Disney comics as published in the original comic books and as reprinted, or in some cases first printed, in The Carl Barks Library, was also expanded to include Barks' non-Disney comics and also, later, Disney comics not included in The Carl Barks Library, and not even published until after The Carl Barks Library had been completed. There is even Barks comic book work first published after Barks' death, including work that has not yet been published in the USA or even in English. This has led to some additional material being added to the index as late as 2016. All of that is included in the Index. Information has also been included to make the Index useful even with other reprints in addition to the original comic books and the The Carl Barks Library. Each data entry includes reference to the original USA comic book publications with comic book title, issue, and story page numbers. It also includes reference to The Carl Barks Library publication including set, volume, and page reference, as well as submission dates, based on Carl Barks' personal work records. Just about any question you might ask about Carl Barks' work, if you can think of it, and it is included in Barks' opus, you can probably find it and all references to it. Want to find every depiction of a cigarette in Barks' comics or a listing of every half page display panel and other large sized panels? It's there. What really was the first appearance of the money bin or its precursors, or the worry room, or Gladstone's luck, every appearance of the Beagle Boys, all incarnations of Barks' pig villain characters, what stories have a camel in them, what Barney Bear and Benny Burro story was rewritten as an Uncle Scrooge story, what other Barks stories were rewritten years or decades later? Where does that huge panel of a money dam bursting with gazillions of dollars flowing forth appear? It's all there in the Index. There are also a dozen chapters of introduction, historical, and background material, topics of special interest, and a Foreword by Michael Barrier. |

carl barks don rosa: RePresenting Magic, UnDoing Evil: Of Human Inner Light and Darkness Alexandra Cheira, 2020-04-14 This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2012. The chapters assembled in this e-Book are a taste of an ongoing discussion on evil and magic which promises to last as long as ‘the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing’ and while the realisation that ‘magic is believing in yourself: if you can do that, you can make anything happen’ does not become a global motto. The first group of chapters, collected in Part I, addresses the ethics and effects of translating magic into literary representations, as well as real-life current practices, of creativity and personal change on the one hand, and of the harmful, malevolent infliction of pain on a third party on another, thus challenging the boundaries of the cultural binary constructions of magic as either good or evil. In Part II, the second group of chapters examines several philosophical, theological, historical, literary, political and pop culture attempts towards understanding different meanings, and kinds, of evil, thus broadening our perception of what evil is and how it has been theorized from Plato to contemporary international politics. This is our time, our call, our responsibility, to undo evil by carrying the magical torch of good to the next station – so that good, as if by magic, can also become contagious among the human kind. |
carl barks don rosa: Drawing the Past, Volume 1 Dorian L. Alexander, Michael Goodrum, Philip Smith, 2022-01-04 Contributions by Lawrence Abrams, Dorian L. Alexander, Max Bledstein, Peter Cullen Bryan, Stephen Connor, Matthew J. Costello, Martin Flanagan, Michael Fuchs, Michael Goodrum, Bridget Keown, Kaleb Knoblach, Christina M. Knopf, Martin Lund, Jordan Newton, Stefan Rabitsch, Maryanne Rhett, and Philip Smith History has always been a matter of arranging evidence into a narrative, but the public debate over the meanings we attach to a given history can seem particularly acute in our current age. Like all artistic mediums, comics possess the power to mold history into shapes that serve its prospective audience and creator both. It makes sense, then, that history, no stranger to the creation of hagiographies, particularly in the service of nationalism and other political ideologies, is so easily summoned to the panelled page. Comics, like statues, museums, and other vehicles for historical narrative, make both monsters and heroes of men while fueling combative beliefs in personal versions of United States history. Drawing the Past, Volume 1: Comics and the Historical Imagination in the United States, the first book in a two-volume series, provides a map of current approaches to comics and their engagement with historical representation. The first section of the book on history and form explores the existence, shape, and influence of comics as a medium. The second section concerns the question of trauma, understood both as individual traumas that can shape the relationship between the narrator and object, and historical traumas that invite a reassessment of existing social, economic, and cultural assumptions. The final section on mythic histories delves into ways in which comics add to the mythology of the US. Together, both volumes bring together a range of different approaches to diverse material and feature remarkable scholars from all over the world. |

carl barks don rosa: Cuban Cinema After the Cold War Enrique García, 2015-10-14 The changes Cuba experienced following the collapse of the Soviet Union compelled Cuban filmmakers to rethink the values developed after the 1959 Castro revolution. Long-forgotten genres re-emerged, established auteurs incorporated new aesthetics into their films and an influx of foreign capital led to the repackaging of revolutionary ideology into more visually attractive narratives. Films such as Alice in Wondertown (1991), Strawberry and Chocolate (1993) and Juan of the Dead (2011) stirred controversy, criticized revolutionary discourse and helped establish new models that allowed post-Castro cinema to find global audiences on an unprecedented scale. This book offers a detailed analysis of key post-Cold War Cuban films. Recurrent sociopolitical tropes are examined to reveal how Cuban cinema reflects the turbulent changes in the island. |
carl barks don rosa: Comics and Power Rikke Platz Cortsen, Erin La Cour, Anne Magnussen, 2015-02-05 Many introductions to comics scholarship books begin with an anecdote recounting the author’s childhood experiences reading comics, thereby testifying to the power of comics to engage and impact youth, but comics and power are intertwined in a numbers of ways that go beyond concern for children’s reading habits. Comics and Power presents very different methods of studying the complex and diverse relationship between comics and power. Divided into three sections, its 14 chapters discuss how comics interact with, reproduce, and/or challenge existing power structures – from the comics medium and its institutions to discourses about art, subjectivity, identity, and communities. The contributors and their work, as such, represent a new generation of comics research that combines the study of comics as a unique art form with a focus on the ways in which comics – like any other medium – participate in shaping the societies of which they are part. |

Wilde, 2023-03-31 Transmedia Character Studies provides a range of methodological tools and foundational vocabulary for the analysis of characters across and between various forms of multimodal, interactive, and even non-narrative or non-fictional media. This highly innovative work offers new perspectives on how to interrelate production discourses, media texts, and reception discourses, and how to select a suitable research corpus for the discussion of characters whose serial appearances stretch across years, decades, or even centuries. Each chapter starts from a different notion of how fictional characters can be considered, tracing character theories and models to approach character representations from perspectives developed in various disciplines and fields. This book will enable graduate students and scholars of transmedia studies, film, television, comics studies, video game studies, popular culture studies, fandom studies, narratology, and creative industries to conduct comprehensive, media-conscious analyses of characters across a variety of media. |
carl barks don rosa: Monstrous Women in Comics Samantha Langsdale, Elizabeth Rae Coody, 2020-04-20 Contributions by Novia Shih-Shan Chen, Elizabeth Rae Coody, Keri Crist-Wagner, Sara Durazo-DeMoss, Charlotte Johanne Fabricius, Ayanni C. Hanna, Christina M. Knopf, Tomoko Kuribayashi, Samantha Langsdale, Jeannie Ludlow, Marcela Murillo, Sho Ogawa, Pauline J. Reynolds, Stefanie Snider, J. Richard Stevens, Justin Wigard, Daniel F. Yezbick, and Jing Zhang Monsters seem to be everywhere these days, in popular shows on television, in award-winning novels, and again and again in Hollywood blockbusters. They are figures that lurk in the margins and so, by contrast, help to illuminate the center—the embodiment of abnormality that summons the definition of normalcy by virtue of everything they are not. Samantha Langsdale and Elizabeth Rae Coody’s edited volume explores the coding of woman as monstrous and how the monster as dangerously evocative of women/femininity/the female is exacerbated by the intersection of gender with sexuality, race, nationality, and disability. To analyze monstrous women is not only to examine comics, but also to witness how those constructions correspond to women’s real material experiences. Each section takes a critical look at the cultural context surrounding varied monstrous voices: embodiment, maternity, childhood, power, and performance. Featured are essays on such comics as Faith, Monstress, Bitch Planet, and Batgirl and such characters as Harley Quinn and Wonder Woman. This volume probes into the patriarchal contexts wherein men are assumed to be representative of the normative, universal subject, such that women frequently become monsters. |

carl barks don rosa: Art History for Comics Ian Horton, Maggie Gray, 2022-09-20 This book looks at comics through the lens of Art History, examining the past influence of art-historical methodologies on comics scholarship to scope how they can be applied to Comics Studies in the present and future. It unearths how early comics scholars deployed art-historical approaches, including stylistic analysis, iconography, Cultural History and the social history of art, and proposes how such methodologies, updated in light of disciplinary developments within Art History, could be usefully adopted in the study of comics today. Through a series of indicative case studies of British and American comics like Eagle, The Mighty Thor, 2000AD, Escape and Heartbreak Hotel, it argues that art-historical methods better address overlooked aspects of visual and material form. Bringing Art History back into the interdisciplinary nexus of comics scholarship raises some fundamental questions about the categories, frameworks and values underlying contemporary Comics Studies. |
