can you get finger waves without a perm: Permanent Waves Julie A. Willett, 2000-06 Throughout the twentieth century, beauty shops have been places where women could enjoy the company of other women, exchange information, and share secrets. The female equivalent of barbershops, they have been institutions vital to community formation and social change. But while the beauty shop created community, it also reflected the racial segregation that has so profoundly shaped American society. Links between style, race, and identity were so intertwined that for much of the beauty shop's history, black and white hairdressing industries were largely separate entities with separate concerns. While African American hair-care workers embraced the chance to be independent from white control, negotiated the meanings of hair straightening, and joined in larger political struggles that challenged Jim Crow, white female hairdressers were embroiled in struggles over self-definition and opposition to their industry's emphasis on male achievement. Yet despite their differences, black and white hairdressers shared common stakes as battles were waged over issues of work, skill, and professionalism unique to women's service work. Permanent Waves traces the development of the American beauty shop, from its largely separate racial origins, through white recognition of the ethnic market, to the present day. |

From dysfunctional workplaces and nutty clients to the joys and sorrows of salon ownership, I feel it's finally time to lather up all the dirty details of what life is like behind the chair. This is a life journal of my experience in the hair industry, a compilation of stories and situations that I've experienced from years behind the chair and a road map on how to get through it to succeed. All the good, the bad, and the hairy. |
can you get finger waves without a perm: L Is for Lion Annie Rachele Lanzillotto, 2013-01-11 Finalist for the 2014 Lambda Literary Award in the Lesbian Memoir/Biography Category presented by the Lambda Literary Foundation This vivid memoir speaks the intense truth of a Bronx tomboy whose 1960s girlhood was marked by her father's lullabies laced with his dissociative memories of combat in World War II. At four years old, Annie Rachele Lanzillotto bounced her Spaldeen on the stoop and watched the boys play stickball in the street; inside, she hid silver teaspoons behind the heat pipes to tap calls for help while her father beat her mother. At eighteen, on the edge of ambitious freedom, her studies at Brown University were halted by the growth of a massive tumor inside her chest. Thus began a wild, truth-seeking journey for survival, fueled by the lessons of lasagna vows, and Spaldeen ascensions. From the stoops of the Bronx to cross-dressing on the streets of Egypt, from the cancer ward at Memorial Sloan-Kettering to New York City's gay club scene of the '80s, this poignant and authentic story takes us from underneath the dining room table to the stoop, the sidewalk, the street, and, ultimately, out into the wide world of immigration, gay subculture, cancer treatment, mental illness, gender dynamics, drug addiction, domestic violence, and a vast array of Italian American characters. With a quintessential New Yorker as narrator and guide, this journey crescendos in a reluctant return home to the timeless wisdom of a peasant, immigrant grandmother, Rosa Marsico Petruzzelli, who shows us the sweetest essence of soul. |

can you get finger waves without a perm: Tacoma's Proctor District Caroline Gallacci, Bill Evans, 2008-01-02 When Allen C. Mason launched his Point Defiance line in the early 1890s, the Proctor area became one of Tacomas first streetcar suburbs. Before this time, Tacomas North End was a remote, unsettled region populated only by those visiting the citys horseracing track. After Mason established a streetcar stop at the intersection of North Twenty-sixth and Proctor Streetsnear the racetrackbusinesses began to line the thoroughfare. By 1900, houses had been constructed within walking distance of the line, and a residential neighborhood provided the impetus for the construction of schools, a firehouse, churches, and a library. By the 1920s, the neighborhood had expanded and changed to reflect the introduction of the automobile as well as the districts popularity with University of Puget Sound students studying nearby. The community spirit that emerged then continues to this day. |

can you get finger waves without a perm: Beyond Beautician Vonda Wallace, 2010 Vonda's mother was one of the countries's greatest fans of television soap operas. Her most uttered phrases were things like I have to go home now; I don't want to miss my stories. Vonda had often thought she took after her mother in this way. One difference was that while her mother's soap adventures were fiction, Vonda's were real life. For the most part, some of Vonda's stories were not as dramatic as those on T.V. but some appeared to be. Her everyday life was an adventure. Her soaps consisted of true life experiences, humorous happenings and memorable moments she wanted to share. |

can you get finger waves without a perm: Flying with One Wing Barbara Heeter, 2008 A young woman named Anna travels to America from central Europe for an arranged marriage in the dawn of the 20th century. If humans will do nearly anything to avoid change in their lives, what motivates someone to leave her homeland and travel to an unknown land for a lifetime with a stranger? Her husband dies before his time, and unable to read or write English, she finds herself a penniless widow with six children to raise. Eventually, Anna and her family move into a house in a small, steel-mill city in western Pennsylvania-when U.S. Steel was on the rise. The house endows them with emotional security; so strong are their feelings for the structure, the house becomes an entity within itself. Anna's five daughters are the heroines of the tale as they pull together for the sake of their mother's dream, though each breaks a rule of the tight system that binds them together. Their story parallels America's as it becomes a world power, and urban life, the suburbs, the middle class, women and blacks change its landscape forever. The story, a living testimony to family and human determination, is narrated by a member of the second generation of Americans. |

can you get finger waves without a perm: Sunday Meetin’ Time Patricia McCullough Walston, 2015-05-21 Sunday Meetin Time is a compelling story written in the same vein as Id Climb the Highest Mountain or The Waltons. It is adapted from the widely read online series of short stories written by Ms. Walston several years ago, Sunday Meetin Time. Nestled in a low valley beneath the foothills of a small mountain range, you will find life happening everywhere. An intimate, riveting story of a bygone era set in the late 1930s and early 1940s, Sunday Meetin Time reveals the lives of the Alrod family, their church, and their friends. An immigrant grandfather from Ireland settled the farm that would remain for over 150 years. The side effects of this book will cause you to sob at the familys losses and laugh at their antics as they praise God through it all in the little church on the hill. Herman Alrod is a corn farmer by heritage and inheritance. He becomes the reluctant pastor of the little church on the hill. This book is a remembrance to those who have fond memories of this era. It will enlighten those who come behind them with the history, poems, songs, scripture, romance, mystery, and adventure of bygone days. America was made strong by families who worshiped in small rural churches, honored God, loved their families, and respected their country. Could America be saved by the same? You will love and laugh at five-year-old LeRoy and his hijinks. |

can you get finger waves without a perm: Trauma, Tresses, and Truth Lyzette Wanzer, 2022-10-04 A Library Journal Best Social Science title of 2022 Black women continue to have a complex and convoluted relationship with their hair. From grammar and high schools to corporate boardrooms and military squadrons, Black and Afro Latina natural hair continues to confound, transfix, and enrage members of White American society. Why, in 2022, is this still the case? Why have we not moved beyond that perennial racist emblem? And why are women so disproportionately affected? Why does our hair become most palatable when it capitulates, and has been subjugated, to resemble Caucasian features as closely as possible? Who or what is responsible for the web of supervision and surveillance of our hair? Who in our society gets to author the prevailing constitution of professional appearance? Particularly relevant during this time of emboldened White supremacy, racism, and provocative othering, this work explores how writing about one of the still-remaining systemic biases in schools, academia, and corporate America might lead to greater understanding and respect. |

can you get finger waves without a perm: Youth Cultures in America Simon J. Bronner, Cindy Dell Clark, 2016-03-21 What are the components of youth cultures today? This encyclopedia examines the facets of youth cultures and brings them to the forefront. Although issues of youth culture are frequently cited in classrooms and public forums, most encyclopedias of childhood and youth are devoted to history, human development, and society. A limitation on the reference bookshelf is the restriction of youth to pre-adolescence, although issues of youth continue into young adulthood. This encyclopedia addresses an academic audience of professors and students in childhood studies, American studies, and culture studies. The authors span disciplines of psychology, sociology, anthropology, history, and folklore. The Encyclopedia of Youth Cultures in America addresses a need for historical, social, and cultural information on a wide array of youth groups. Such a reference work serves as a corrective to the narrow public view that young people are part of an amalgamated youth group or occupy malicious gangs and satanic cults. Widespread reports of bullying, school violence, dominance of athletics over academics, and changing demographics in the United States has drawn renewed attention to the changing cultural landscape of youth in and out of school to explain social and psychological problems. |
