  celebration mission pool: Life's Journey George W. Jones, 2008-06-30 For over twenty years, George W. Jones (1888-1952) was the beloved Episcopal priest at Epiphany Mission in Sherwood, Tennessee. Beginning in 1932, Father Jones published The Booklet, a quarterly report of the Mission activities. It was here that he would write about daily life in this small remote area of the Cumberland Mountains, the hardships of living through the Great Depression and World War II, and also include his inspirational and spiritual writings. Through his poems, stories, and letters he offered words of encouragement and inspiration. Life's Journey is a collection of essays and poems by George W. Jones that appeared in issues of The Booklet. Also included is an essay on George W. Jones by Editor Dan Hardison and photographs that appeared in issues of the The Booklet.
  celebration mission pool: The WPA Guide to Arizona Federal Writers' Project, 2013-10-31 During the 1930s in the United States, the Works Progress Administration developed the Federal Writers’ Project to support writers and artists while making a national effort to document the country’s shared history and culture. The American Guide series consists of individual guides to each of the states. Little-known authors—many of whom would later become celebrated literary figures—were commissioned to write these important books. John Steinbeck, Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, and Ralph Ellison are among the more than 6,000 writers, editors, historians, and researchers who documented this celebration of local histories. Photographs, drawings, driving tours, detailed descriptions of towns, and rich cultural details exhibit each state’s unique flavor. At the time of the publication of the WPA Guide to Arizona in 1940, the Grand Canyon State was the newest addition to the union. The guide presents a state of contrasts, both geographically and culturally. The photographs show many facets of the state—from the mesas and desert lands to the Spanish missions and Native American art.

Benazir Bhutto, the former prime minister, was killed by gunfire and explosive devices as she left a campaign event in December 2007; strong evidence links members of extremist organizations to her slaying. These murders underscore the fact that religion, politics, and policy are inextricably linked in Pakistan. In this book, Haroon K. Ullah analyzes the origins, ideologies, bases of support, and electoral successes of the largest and most influential Islamic parties in Pakistan. Based on his extensive field work in Pakistan, he develops a new typology for understanding and comparing the discourses put forth by these parties in order to assess what drives them and what separates the moderate from the extreme. A better understanding of the range of parties is critical for knowing how the US and other Western nations can engage states where Islamic political parties hold both political and moral authority. Pakistan’s current democratic transition will hinge on how well Islamic parties contribute to civilian rule, shun violence, and mobilize support for political reform. Ullah’s political-party typology may also shed light on the politics of other majority-Muslim democracies, such as Egypt and Tunisia, where Islamist political parties have recently won elections.
