When used in combination with specific devices and sensors, it can provide valuable diagnostic and prognostic information in a wide range of populations. Exercise testing outcomes are also useful for training prescriptions and defining responses to clinical trials evaluating interventions. Whole-body maximal tests (e.g., cardiopulmonary exercise testing), field tests (e.g., walking tests), and modalities isolating a muscle group (e.g., isokinetic endurance testing) all have their advantages and limits and should be viewed as complementary. Recent advances in wearable technology and artificial intelligence provide unique opportunities to broaden the application of these tests and facilitate their interpretation. In the meantime, the clinimetric properties of some widely used exercise tests are still poorly documented in several clinical populations, which hampers optimal diagnosis and management. Moreover, most exercise tests used in clinical practice are suffering from a lack of ecological validity and there is a need to develop and valid new testing modalities that best mimic daily life functioning. This publication starts by examining data cumulated since the late 1950s on secular trends and geographic variability in pediatric fitness test performances of children and adolescents from 23 countries in North America, Europe, Asia, Australasia, Africa and the Middle East. There is evidence that there has been a global decline in pediatric aerobic performance in recent decades, relative stability in anaerobic performance, and that the best performing children come from northern and central Europe. It finishes by considering possible causes, including whether declines in aerobic performance are the result of distributional or across-the-board declines, and whether increases in obesity alone can explain the declines in aerobic performance. canada post fitness test: The effect of two exercise programs on the rehabilitation of individuals with colorectal cancer in an inpatient setting in Germany Liat Levy, 2005-02-14 Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Research in the field of exercise therapy for cancer patients primarily focused on individuals with breast cancer who receive exercise interventions under outpatient conditions. This research study investigated individuals with colorectal cancer under inpatient conditions and aimed to broaden the application of exercise intervention treatments beyond that of breast cancer. The research included two study groups; standard exercise group (SEG, n=44) receiving indoor gymnastic exercise (IGE) and modified exercise group (MEG, n=39) receiving IGE plus additional outdoor walking activity. Participation in the specific exercise therapy program was independent of other therapies received in the inpatient rehabilitation program (IRP). The patients completed QOL questionnaires (QLQ-C30 & QLQ-CR38), psychological distress scale (HADS) and underwent treadmill stress-testing (TST) at the beginning (T1) and upon completion (T2) of the IRP. The QOL and the HADS questionnaires were administrated after a six month follow up (T3) proceeding the IRP completion. Results indicate significant QOL and HADS improvements in pre to post-testing for both study groups. The TST results indicate superior improvements in the MEG in comparison to the SEG. Some of the T1 to T2 QOL and HADS improvement maintained at T3. We conclude that 3 weeks IRP was adequate to reveal improvements in QOL, psychological measures and functional capacity. Future research should emphasize patient motivation for participation in physical activity after completing IRP. James (Jimmy) Pritchard is a human performance specialist/sports scientist who has trained and consulted athletes at the Olympic, NHL, NFL, and Division I collegiate level. Specific to alpine ski racing, he served as the Director of Strength and Conditioning for Ski and Snowboard Club Vail in Vail, Colorado where he helped prepare a long list of US Ski Team athletes including Alice McKennis, Mikaela Shiffrin, and Tess Johnson. He is a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) as well as registered strength and conditioning coach (RSCC) through the NSCA working with athletes and human performance program managers on a regular basis to find optimal human performance solutions. James has presented at conferences around the United States discussing long term athlete development, written over 150 articles for several media outlets, has been published in the NSCA’s Strength and Conditioning Journal, and taught courses about strength and conditioning at Colorado Mountain College. James holds a BSc in Exercise Science from Colorado Mesa University and MSc degree in Exercise Science from Edith Cowan University. Jim Taylor, PhD, Psychology, is an internationally recognized authority on the psychology of sport and parenting. He has consulted with athletes, coaches, and parents in tennis, skiing, cycling, triathlon, track and field, swimming, football, golf, baseball, fencing, and many other sports for more than 30 years. Dr. Taylor is the author of 17 books and the editor of 4 textbooks on sport psychology. He is also a former world-ranked alpine ski racer, second-degree black belt in karate, marathon runner, and Ironman triathlete. |
