cgp periodic table: The Fourth Turning William Strauss, Neil Howe, 1997-12-29 NATIONAL BESTSELLER • Discover the game-changing theory of the cycles of history and what past generations can teach us about living through times of upheaval—with deep insights into the roles that Boomers, Generation X, and Millennials have to play—now with a new preface by Neil Howe. First comes a High, a period of confident expansion. Next comes an Awakening, a time of spiritual exploration and rebellion. Then comes an Unraveling, in which individualism triumphs over crumbling institutions. Last comes a Crisis—the Fourth Turning—when society passes through a great and perilous gate in history. William Strauss and Neil Howe will change the way you see the world—and your place in it. With blazing originality, The Fourth Turning illuminates the past, explains the present, and reimagines the future. Most remarkably, it offers an utterly persuasive prophecy about how America’s past will predict what comes next. Strauss and Howe base this vision on a provocative theory of American history. The authors look back five hundred years and uncover a distinct pattern: Modern history moves in cycles, each one lasting about the length of a long human life, each composed of four twenty-year eras—or “turnings”—that comprise history’s seasonal rhythm of growth, maturation, entropy, and rebirth. Illustrating this cycle through a brilliant analysis of the post–World War II period, The Fourth Turning offers bold predictions about how all of us can prepare, individually and collectively, for this rendezvous with destiny. |

cgp periodic table: The Periodic Kingdom Peter Atkins, 2013-12-31 A 'travel guide' to the periodic table, explaining the history, geography and the rules of behaviour in this imagined land. The Periodic Kingdom is a journey of imagination in which Peter Atkins treats the periodic table of elements - the 109 chemical elements in the world, from which everything is made - as a country, a periodic kingdom, each region of which corresponds to an element. Arranged much like a travel guide, the book introduces the reader to the general features of the table, the history of the elements, and the underlying arrangement of the table in terms of the structure and properties of atoms. Atkins sees elements as finely balanced living personalities, with quirks of character and certain, not always outward, dispositions, and the kingdom is thus a land of intellectual satisfaction and infinite delight. |

cgp periodic table: Hierarchy in Natural and Social Sciences Denise Pumain, 2006-02-09 Hierarchy is a form of organisation of complex systems that rely on or produce a strong differentiation in capacity (power and size) between the parts of the system. It is frequently observed within the natural living world as well as in social institutions. According to the authors, hierarchy results from random processes, follows an intentional design, or is the result of the organisation which ensures an optimal circulation of energy for information. This book reviews ancient and modern representations and explanations of hierarchies, and compares their relevance in a variety of fields, such as language, societies, cities, and living species. It throws light on concepts and models such as scaling laws, fractals and self-organisation that are fundamental in the dynamics and morphology of complex systems. At a time when networks are celebrated for their efficiency, flexibility and better social acceptance, much can be learned about the persistent universality and adaptability of hierarchies, and from the analogies and differences between biological and social organisation and processes. This book addresses a wide audience of biologists and social scientists, as well as managers and executives in a variety of institutions. |

cgp periodic table: Solids in Sewers Richard M. Ashley, Jean-Luc Bertrand-Krajewski, T. Hvitved-Jacobsen, M. Verbanck, 2004-04-30 This Report presents information on the current state of knowledge of the origins, occurrence, nature and effects of sewer solids for use by engineers, scientists, administrators and water quality planners for the planning, design and operation of sewerage systems. The report addresses both sewer maintenance requirements and environmental protection issues. Increasing environmental standards, coupled with public expectations, have led to stringent water quality standards. In response to this, it has been necessary to develop new methodologies and computer based analytical techniques to model and understand the performance of all aspects of waste water systems. Fundamental to these techniques is the understanding of the way in which sewer solids contribute to the poor performance of wastewater systems and consequential environmental damage. The information presented in this Report about the origins, nature, movement, hydraulic and polluting effects of solids in sewers has enabled strategies and rules to be developed for the management of sewerage systems to minimise the deleterious effects of these solids and associated pollutants. cgp periodic table: Next Generation Sequencing Technologies and Challenges in Sequence Assembly Sara El-Metwally, Osama M. Ouda, Mohamed Helmy, 2014-04-19 The introduction of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies resulted in a major transformation in the way scientists extract genetic information from biological systems, revealing limitless insight about the genome, transcriptome and epigenome of any species. However, with NGS, came its own challenges that require continuous development in the sequencing technologies and bioinformatics analysis of the resultant raw data and assembly of the full length genome and transcriptome. Such developments lead to outstanding improvements of the performance and coverage of sequencing and improved quality for the assembled sequences, nevertheless, challenges such as sequencing errors, expensive processing and memory usage for assembly and sequencer specific errors remains major challenges in the field. This book aims to provide brief overviews the NGS field with special focus on the challenges facing the NGS field, including information on different experimental platforms, assembly algorithms and software tools, assembly error correction approaches and the correlated challenges. |

cgp periodic table: The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2019 Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, International Fund for Agricultural Development , World Food Programme, World Health Organization, United Nations Children's Fund, 2019-07-15 This year’s report presents evidence that the absolute number of people who suffer from hunger continues to slowly increase. The report also highlights that food insecurity is more than just hunger. For the first time, the report provides evidence that many people in the world, even if not hungry, experience moderate food insecurity as they face uncertainties about their ability to obtain food and are forced to compromise on the quality and/or quantity of the food they consume. This phenomenon is observed globally, not only in low- and middle-income countries but also in high income countries. The report also shows that the world is not on track to meet global nutrition targets, including those on low birthweight and on reducing stunting among children under five years. Moreover, overweight and obesity continue to increase in all regions, particularly among school-age children and adults. The report stresses that no region is exempt from the epidemic of overweight and obesity, underscoring the necessity of multifaceted, multisectoral approaches to halt and reverse these worrying trends. In light of the fragile state of the world economy, the report presents new evidence confirming that hunger has been on the rise for many countries where the economy has slowed down or contracted. Unpacking the links between economic slowdowns and downturns and food insecurity and malnutrition, the report contends that the effects of the former on the latter can only be offset by addressing the root causes of hunger and malnutrition: poverty, inequality and marginalization. |

cgp periodic table: Union of the Comoros International Monetary, International Monetary Fund. African Dept., 2023-06-21 Comoros is a small, fragile island state facing significant development challenges, balance of payments needs, a high risk of debt distress, vulnerabilities in the banking system, and governance weaknesses. In recent years, the country was hit by successive shocks including Cyclone Kenneth in 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020- 21, and fallout from the war in Ukraine in 2022. Two rounds of emergency support under the RCF/RFI of SDR 8.9 million each were approved in July 2019 and April 2020. A Staff Monitored Program (SMP), approved in September 2021, ended with broadly satisfactory performance, helping to establish a track record of policy implementation towards an Extended Credit Facility (ECF) arrangement. Policies under the SMP aimed to address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, reduce economic risks, and begin reforms to tackle sources of fragility. |

cgp periodic table: The Union of the Comoros International Monetary Fund. African Dept., 2024-12-19 Following the January 14 presidential election, President Azali announced a new cabinet in July, introducing several new and youthful faces into the political scene. Amid this political transition, Comoros’ economy is showing signs of softening coupled with inflationary pressures driven by accelerating food prices. Credit to the private sector has slowed throughout this year as importers deleveraged following the significant ramp-up in borrowing over the last two years to meet high import prices. Import volumes—notably food products—have declined during 2024H1 while exports and public investment have both been lower than expected. Tax revenue administration efforts were hampered by post-elections unrest, the cholera epidemic, and severe weather events during the first half of 2024. Nonetheless, the external sector remains stable with adequate reserve cover above 7 months of imports. |

cgp periodic table: Union of the Comoros International Monetary Fund. African Dept., 2024-01-08 Economic recovery is underway, supported by the resumption of social activities, tourism, and ongoing public investment projects. Inflation has decelerated, in line with normalizations in international oil and food prices thus far in 2023. However, risks to the outlook are elevated due to the fragile context and global uncertainty; dependence on imports, remittances, and foreign aid means the economy remains highly vulnerable to external shocks. In this context, the economic reform program supported by the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) seeks to reduce fragility and increase economic resilience by building fiscal buffers, reducing debt vulnerabilities, strengthening the financial sector, and mitigating corruption risks. |
