casebook careers: The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes Arthur Conan Doyle, 2022-12-19 The Casebook collection cannot be called the strongest in the series, but it certainly has its merits. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle understood that these twelve stories about the genius detective would be his farewell to him, and he certainly took risks with the narrative, at times departing from his standard approach. In this particular book, more than in any other, he appears to have relaxed and gotten creative with his style. Some plots are better spelled out than others, but they are all interesting. There are stories in the collection told by Sherlock himself, and one of them, which happened during Holmes' retirement, takes place mostly on the beach. It's an amusing departure from the detective's usual habitat. Doyle also allowed himself some sentimentality, particularly in the story The Adventure Of The Three Garridebs, in which Watson gets into a difficult situation and Holmes is touchingly worried about him. And even loses control of himself for a moment. It's so unexpected! Betrayal, mutilation, and the horrific consequences of infidelity are just some of the themes addressed in the stories in this collection, along with atmospheric insertions of the Gothic that include a bloodsucking vampire, crypts at the middle of the night, and weird bones in an oven. |

casebook careers: A Casebook of Inclusive Pedagogical Practices for Second Language Teacher Education Amy B. Gooden, 2021-02-05 This casebook is designed to broaden L2 teacher knowledge, thinking, and practice with regard to making language and learning accessible to all students. Language teachers are especially accountable for promoting socially just, inclusive, decolonizing, and multicultural pedagogical practices and curricula; at this critical juncture in history, this book is intended to raise language teachers’ awareness of the importance of critically examining and reflecting on the intersectionality of language education and inclusive pedagogical practices. Language teacher educators can use this text in their courses and workshops to build on and extend theoretical foundations, while making critical practical connections. The 12 cases presented here cover a range of inclusive language teaching and learning issues that practitioners are likely to face in their respective teaching contexts. All the cases are based on real-life dilemmas faced by practitioners in the field and have been informed by discussions with pre-service and in-service student teachers. The cases represent a range of classroom contexts: K–12 ESL/sheltered English immersion, world foreign language, and post-secondary EAP; private, charter, and public schools; and urban and suburban settings. The cases are accompanied by pre- and post-problem sets and in-class discussion questions. This volume applies the case-based pedagogy often used in some fields to that of second language teacher education to encourage pre- and in-service teachers to grapple with the types of dilemmas and decisions teachers confront every day. The cases here are not intended as exemplars of practice to be emulated or illustrations of existing theories; instead, they are problem-based narratives that resist clear-cut answers or solutions and remain open ended to stimulate further investigation and reflection. The goal is to mimic the complexity of the classroom where teachers confront a range of pedagogical and learning challenges, and the ensuing experience requires critical, real-time decisions that demand keen professional discernment. |

casebook careers: The Public Manager Case Book Terrel R Rhodes, Patricia M Alt, Cheryl L Brown, Marueen Brown, Robert Gassner, Sherril Gelmon, Gary R Rassel, Carole L Jurkiewicz, Linda E Swayne, David F Thompson, 2002-07-19 As academic disciplines, public administration and public policy programs have struggled to link theoretical and conceptual grounding with practical application. Students often have discrete courses in human resources, finance, organizational behavior, policy analysis, and planning, but rarely are they offered an opportunity to pursue these through actual cases and problems facing public managers. The Public Manager Case Book is a collection of eight public administration cases that allows students to practice the decision-making skills they will need in their jobs as public managers. Each case focuses on the local administrative issues managers most often face in their day-to-day responsibilities, and each encourages students to collaborate with others in order to gain the necessary cooperation and information. The cases are multi-dimensional and challenge students and professors to draw from a variety of knowledge areas to develop alternative recommendations, decisions, or actions. An instructor′s manual is available for useful background material, references, theoretical and conceptual framework, and teaching tips. About the Editor Terrel L. Rhodes is Professor of Public Administration and Vice Provost for Curriculum and Undergraduate Studies at Portland State University. |

casebook careers: Diversity in the Classroom Judith H. Shulman, Amalia Mesa-Bains, 2018-10-24 This casebook is part of a nationwide effort to capture and use practitioner knowledge to better prepare teachers for the reality of today's classrooms, given a student population vastly different from that of even a decade ago. Consciously designed to provoke engaging and demanding discussion, the cases presented here are candid, dramatic, highly readable accounts of teaching events or series of events. Set in three of the nation's most diverse cities -- San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix -- the cases offer problem-based snapshots of on-the-job dilemmas. The teacher-authors discuss topics that generate heated interchange and run the risk of polarizing opinions and creating defensive assumptions, particularly those dealing with bias, race, and class. These issues, plus cultural behaviors and socioeconomic circumstances have important implications for classroom practices. By examining such issues, the editors hope that educators will see -- and act on -- the need for a greater variety of teaching styles, distribution of opportunities, and educational access for all students. |
