campbell biology tenth edition: Beyond Europe Radoslaw Fiedler, Andrzej Stelmach, 2018 Beyond Europe is an interesting collection of the research papers in the area of International Relations, which provides an overview of the modern world in the light of various theories explaining the mode in which certain countries function on the international arena. Despite the fact that the selection feels somewhat random at first, and the connection between the chosen topics is not immediately clear, the collection does manage to form a coherent whole. The discrepancies, lines of divisions and prevalence of the particularisms do, in the end, create the global picture of the contemporary world, which is far from unified - even the agreements that are necessary for the future existence of the world can not be achieved at this stage. It is exemplified by the agreements and syndicates established by certain players on the international area that serve nothing else but to create or maintain the domination of one country over the other. One of the few conclusions that one might come to after reading the volume is that the lack of empathy and class consciousness on the international area withholds the weaker players from development, and that modern politics laced with the neoliberal mode of thinking very unfortunately take neocolonialism for a more positively resounding concept of globalization. The collection takes a non-Eurocentric approach and does not moralize, which can be considered as an advantage of the book. Piotr Kwiatkiewicz

campbell biology tenth edition: You William B. Irvine, 2018-09-07 What are you? Obviously, you are a person with human ancestors that can be plotted on a family tree, but you have other identities as well. According to evolutionary biologists, you are a member of the species Homo sapiens and as such have ancestral species that can be plotted on the tree of life. According to microbiologists, you are a collection of cells, each of which has a cellular ancestry that goes back billions of years. A geneticist, though, will think of you primarily as a gene-replication machine and might produce a tree that reveals the history of any given gene. And finally, a physicist will give a rather different answer to the identity question: you can best be understood as a collection of atoms, each of which has a very long history. Some have been around since the Big Bang, and others are the result of nuclear fusion that took place within a star. Not only that, but most of your atoms belonged to other living things before joining you. From your atoms' point of view, then, you are just a way station on a multibillion-year-long journey. You: A Natural History offers a multidisciplinary investigation of your hyperextended family tree, going all the way back to the Big Bang. And while your family tree may contain surprises, your hyperextended history contains some truly amazing stories. As the result of learning more about who and what you are, and about how you came to be here, you will likely see the world around you with fresh eyes. You will also become aware of all the one-off events that had to take place for your existence to be possible: stars had to explode, the earth had to be hit 4.5 billion years ago by a planetesimal and 65 million years ago by an asteroid, microbes had to engulf microbes, the African savanna had to undergo climate change, and of course, any number of your direct ancestors had to meet and mate. It is difficult, on becoming aware of just how contingent your own existence is, not to feel very lucky to be part of our universe.

campbell biology tenth edition: Inclusivity and Indigeneity in Education for Sustainable Development Behera, Santosh Kumar, Ibrahim, Atyaf Hasan, Romdhani, Faten, 2024-06-03 A major issue globally revolves around the urgent need to reshape our education system, aligning it with the ambitious Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set to transform the world by 2030. These goals, comprising 17 distinct objectives and 169 targets, form an ambitious agenda that seeks to recalibrate the global landscape across social, economic, and environmental dimensions. Inclusivity and Indigeneity in Education for Sustainable Development stands as a catalyst for fostering dialogue on the interconnected realms of education, indigeneity, and sustainable development. It explores the relationships between these pillars and offers a comprehensive understanding of their transformative potential. The book emphasizes the essence of inclusivity, echoing the 'No one left behind' SDG agenda, which goes beyond mere academic discourse to foster fairness and justice. Additionally, it delves into the invaluable resource of indigenous knowledge, transmitted orally across generations, and its profound connection to sustainable development. By advocating for a shift in education, the book calls for an approach that ensures no one is left behind in the teaching and learning process. This paradigm shift is envisioned as a broad civilizational project, connecting with marginalized communities and tapping into their distinct cultural resources for crafting resilient and sustainable strategies.

campbell biology tenth edition: Teaching Science Karl Maton, J. R. Martin, Y. J. Doran, 2021-04-25 Science has never been more important, yet science education faces serious challenges. At present, science education research only sees half the picture, focusing on how students learn and their changing conceptions. Both teaching practice and what is taught, science knowledge itself, are missing. This book offers new, interdisciplinary ways of thinking about science teaching that foreground the forms taken by science knowledge and the language, imagery and gesture through which they are expressed. This book brings together leading international scholars from Systemic Functional Linguistics, a long-established approach to language, and Legitimation Code Theory, a rapidly growing sociological approach to knowledge practices. It explores how to bring knowledge, language and pedagogy back into the picture of science education but also offers radical innovations that will shape future research. Part I sets out new ways of understanding the role of knowledge in integrating mathematics into science, teaching scientific explanations and using multimedia resources such as animations. Part II provides new concepts for showing the role of language in complex scientific explanations, in how scientific taxonomies are built, and in combining with mathematics and images to create science knowledge. Part III draws on the approaches to explore how more students can access scientific knowledge, how to teach professional reasoning, the role of body language in science teaching, and making mathematics understandable to all learners. Teaching Science offers major leaps forward in understanding knowledge, language and pedagogy that will shape the research agenda far beyond science education.
