biggles bibliography: The New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature: Volume 4, 1900-1950 George Watson, I. R. Willison, 1972-12-07 More than fifty specialists have contributed to this new edition of volume 4 of The Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature. The design of the original work has established itself so firmly as a workable solution to the immense problems of analysis, articulation and coordination that it has been retained in all its essentials for the new edition. The task of the new contributors has been to revise and integrate the lists of 1940 and 1957, to add materials of the following decade, to correct and refine the bibliographical details already available, and to re-shape the whole according to a new series of conventions devised to give greater clarity and consistency to the entries.

biggles bibliography: Biggles Goes to War Captain W. E. Johns, 2024-07-22 Biggles is asked to set up a new air force! In the aftermath of the Great War, Biggles is contacted by an ambassador in London, alerting him to growing tensions between the small European nation of Maltovia and their sabre-rattling neighbour, Lovitzna. Maltovia needs help to create an air force to protect themselves, and Biggles is just the man for the job. After a menacing visit from the Lovitznian Minister in London, Biggles is convinced: he will offer Maltovia his services. Upon arriving there, however, Biggles quickly senses something isn’t right: the Commander-in-Chief of the Maltovian forces is strangely hostile, and Biggles’ aircraft hangar is set ablaze in mysterious circumstances. This is not the simple mission it was meant to be... With suspicions against both sides, can Biggles and his crew settle the conflict before tensions come to a head?

biggles bibliography: The Most Dangerous Game Gavin Lyall, 2011-09-28 'Cary is great with a gun and deadpan about danger' Spectator Bill Cary makes a precarious living flying aerial surveys over Lapland. When he's hired by a wealthy American hunter, Frederick Wells Homer, to fly into a prohibited part of Finland near the Soviet border, the job seems shady indeed, and when a major crook wants him to go on the hunt for Tsarist treasure, things get messy. With thugs and the Finnish Secret Service already on his tail, matters get worse when Homer's beautiful sister turns up to search for him, and Cary's fellow bush pilots start getting killed off in a series of suspicious accidents. Cary begins to realise that it may all stem from an incident in his wartime past. The Most Dangerous Game was shortlisted for the British Crime Writers Association Gold Dagger Award.   biggles bibliography: Imperialism and Juvenile Literature Jeffrey Richards, 1989 Many experts recognize that juvenile literature acts as an excellent reflector of the dominant ideas of an age; the values and fantasies of adult authors are often dressed up in fictional garb for youthful consumption. This collection examines a portion of the mass-produced juvenile literature, from the mid-19th century until the 1950s, focusing on the cluster of ideas connected with Britain's role in the maintenance of order and the spread of civilization.   biggles bibliography: Juvenile" Literature and British Society Charles Ferrall, Anna Jackson, 2012-05-10 In this study, Charles Ferrall and Anna Jackson argue that the Victorians created a concept of adolescence that lasted into the twentieth century and yet is strikingly at odds with post-Second World War notions of adolescence as a period of storm and stress. In the enormously popular juvenile literature of the period, primarily boys’ and girls’ own adventure and school stories, adolescence is acknowledged as a time of sexual awareness and yet also of a romantic idealism that is lost with marriage, a time when boys and girls acquire adult duties and responsibilities and yet have not had to assume the roles of breadwinner or household manager. The book reveals a concept of adolescence as significant as the Romantic cult of childhood that preceded it, which will be of interest to scholars of both children’s literature and Victorian culture.
biggles bibliography: Richard the Third Paul Murray Kendall, 2013-04-18 Richard III (2 October 1452 - 22 August 1485) was King of England from 1483 until his death in 1485 in the Battle of Bosworth Field. He was the last king of the House of York and the last of the Plantagenet dynasty. His defeat at Bosworth Field, the last decisive battle of the Wars of the Roses, marked the end of the Middle Ages in England. He is the subject of the fictional historical play Richard III by William Shakespeare. In 2012, an archaeological excavation was conducted on a city council car park using ground-penetrating radar on the site once occupied by Greyfriars, Leicester. The University of Leicester confirmed on 4 February 2013 that the skeleton found in the excavation is that of Richard III, based on the results of radiocarbon dating, a comparison with contemporary reports of his appearance, and a comparison of his mitochondrial DNA with that of two matrilineal descendants of Richard III's eldest sister, Anne of York.

biggles bibliography: Anil's Ghost Michael Ondaatje, 2010-10-08 Winning a Governor General’s Literary Award for Fiction, the Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize and the Scotiabank Giller Prize, Anil’s Ghost is another award-winning novel from Michael Ondaatje. Steeped in centuries of cultural achievement and tradition, Sri Lanka has been ravaged in the late twentieth century by bloody civil war. Anil Tissera, born in Sri Lanka but educated in England and the U.S., is sent by an international human rights group to participate in an investigation into suspected mass political murders in her homeland. Working with an archaeologist, she discovers a skeleton whose identity takes Anil on a fascinating journey that involves a riveting mystery. What follows, in a novel rich with character, emotion, and incident, is a story about love and loss, about family, identity and the unknown enemy. And it is a quest to unlock the hidden past—like a handful of soil analyzed by an archaeologist, the story becomes more diffuse the farther we reach into history. A universal tale of the casualties of war, unfolding as a detective story, the book gradually gives way to a more intricate exploration of its characters, a symphony of loss and loneliness haunted by a cast of solitary strangers and ghosts. The atrocities of a seemingly futile, muddled war are juxtaposed against the ancient, complex and ultimately redemptive culture and landscape of Sri Lanka.

biggles bibliography: How to Watch Television, Second Edition Ethan Thompson, Jason Mittell, 2020-03-31 A new edition that brings the ways we watch and think about television up to the present We all have opinions about the television shows we watch, but television criticism is about much more than simply evaluating the merits of a particular show and deeming it “good” or “bad.” Rather, criticism uses the close examination of a television program to explore that program’s cultural significance, creative strategies, and its place in a broader social context. How to Watch Television, Second Edition brings together forty original essays—more than half of which are new to this edition—from today’s leading scholars on television culture, who write about the programs they care (and think) the most about. Each essay focuses on a single television show, demonstrating one way to read the program and, through it, our media culture. From fashioning blackness in Empire to representation in Orange is the New Black and from the role of the reboot in Gilmore Girls to the function of changing political atmospheres in Roseanne, these essays model how to practice media criticism in accessible language, providing critical insights through analysis—suggesting a way of looking at TV that students and interested viewers might emulate. The contributors discuss a wide range of television programs past and present, covering many formats and genres, spanning fiction and non-fiction, broadcast, streaming, and cable. Addressing shows from TV’s earliest days to contemporary online transformations of the medium, How to Watch Television, Second Edition is designed to engender classroom discussion among television critics of all backgrounds. To access additional essays from the first edition, visit the links tab at nyupress.org/9781479898817/how-to-watch-television-second-edition/.
