bible stories with liv: Narrating, Doing, Experinecing Annikki Kaivola-Bregenhøj, Klein Barbro, Palmenfelt Ulf, 2018-11-01 How do people tell of experiences, things and events that mean a lot to them and are unforgettable? Eight Nordic folklorists here examine personal experience stories and the way they are narrated in an attempt to gain an understanding of the people behind them and to reveal how these people handle their history, their lives and their cultural memory. All the articles are based on interviews and narrator-researcher collaboration. The stories tell about birth, sickness and miraculous cures, intergenerational relations, war, and matters not normally talked about. The analyses complement one another and the work may be used as a university course book. |

bible stories with liv: Fields of the Lord Lorraine V. Aragon, 2000-06-01 Religious and ethnic violence between Indonesia's Muslims and Christians escalated dramatically just before and after President Suharto resigned in 1998. In this first major ethnographic study of Christianization in Indonesia, Aragon delineates colonial and postcolonial circumstances contributing to the dynamics of these contemporary conflicts. Aragon's ethnography of Indonesian Christian minorities in Sulawesi combines a political economy of colonial missionization with a microanalysis of shifting religious ideology and practice. Fields of the Lord challenges much comparative religion scholarship by contending that religions, like contemporary cultural groups, be located in their spheres of interaction rather than as the abstracted cognitive and behavioral systems conceived by many adherents, modernist states, and Western scholars. Aragon's portrayal of near-tribal populations who characterize themselves as fanatic Christians asks the reader to rethink issues of Indonesian nationalism and modern development as they converged in President Suharto's late New Order state. Through its careful documentation of colonial missionary tactics, unexpected postcolonial upheavals, and contemporary Christian narratives, Fields of the Lord analyzes the historical and institutional links between state rule and individuals' religious choices. Beyond these contributions, this ethnography includes captivating stories of Salvation Army angels of the forest and nationally marginal but locally autonomous dry-rice and coffee farmers. These Salvation Army soldiers make Protestantism work on their own ecological, moral, and political turf, maintaining their communities and ongoing religious concerns in the difficult terrain of the Central Sulawesi highlands. |

Drawing together international research from RE teaching and learning, the book explores various paths to integrate a truly knowledge-based religious education. The book will appeal to students and scholars of religious education, sociology of education and the philosophy of religion. |

bible stories with liv: Stories of Desire and Narratives of Faith Victor Hunter, Lanny Hunter, 2019-04-02 Stories are the foundation for identity and the ground of understanding. Stories of Desire and Narratives of Faith addresses humankind’s search for identity and meaning through the stories of science and religion. Both arose in the mists of history. Both are awe inspiring. Both beggar the imagination. Both have always competed for authority. Science gained preeminence in our postmodern, pluralistic, globalized world as evidenced based, while religion (for many reasons) lost credibility. Yet religion has not disappeared. Stories is a concise, engaging, inspiring accessible account of the history of science (geological and biological evolution perceived through increasingly sophisticated technology) and the history of nine text-based world religions of antiquity. Stories avoids insider language, democratizing both God talk and scientific jargon without patronizing either. There is no attempt to identify the best or truest religion, and Stories disavows dogmatic religious triumphalism. The authors do follow the tradition of giving an account of their Christian faith, the only religious story with which they have experience. They invite others to do the same, paying attention to their own stories as they grapple with modern science, do theology, and engage faith. Stories proposes how and in what manner these disciplines can meaningfully converse in today’s world. |

bible stories with liv: The Struggle to Stay Katie Gaddini, 2022-03-08 Evangelical Christianity is often thought of as oppressive to women. The #MeToo era, when many women hit a breaking point with rampant sexism, has also reached evangelical communities. Yet more than thirty million women in the United States still identify as evangelical. Why do so many women remain in male-dominated churches that marginalize them, and why do others leave? In each case, what does this cost them? The Struggle to Stay is an intimate and insightful portrait of single women’s experiences in evangelical churches. Drawing on unprecedented access to churches in the United States and the United Kingdom, Katie Gaddini relates the struggles of four women, interwoven with her own story of leaving behind a devout faith. She connects these personal narratives with rigorous analysis of Christianity and politics in both countries, and contextualizes them through interviews with more than fifty other evangelical women. Gaddini grapples with the complexities of obedience and resistance for women within a patriarchal religion against the backdrop of a culture war. Her exploration of how women choose to leave or remain in environments that constrain them is nuanced and personal, telling powerful stories of faith, community, isolation, and loss. Bringing together meticulous research and deep empathy, The Struggle to Stay provides a revelatory account of the private burdens that evangelical women bear. |
bible stories with liv: Making the Bible Modern Penny Schine Gold, 2018-10-18 The Bible has played a critical role in the story of Judaism, modernity, and identity. Penny Schine Gold examines the arena of children's education and the role of the Bible in the reshaping of Jewish identity, especially in the United States in the 1920s and 1930s, when a second generation of Eastern European Jews engaged the task of Americanizing Jewish culture, religion, and institutions. Professional Jewish educators based in the Reform movement undertook a multifaceted agenda for the Bible in America: to modernize it, harmonize it with American values, and move it to the center of the religious school curriculum. Through public schooling, the children of Jewish immigrants brought America home; it was up to the adults to fashion a Judaism that their children could take back out into America. Because of its historic role in the development of Judaism and its cultural significance in American life, Gold finds, the Bible provided Jews with vital links to both the past and the present. The ancient sacred text of the Bible, transformed into highly abridged and amended Bible tales, was brought into service as a bridge between tradition and modernity.Gold analyzes these American developments with reference to the intellectual history of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Europe, innovations in public schooling and social theory, Protestant religious education, and later versions of children's Bibles in the United States and Israel. She shows that these seemingly simple children's books are complex markers of the pressing concerns of Jews in the modern world. |
bible stories with liv: Memory in a Time of Prose Daniel D. Pioske, 2018-08-15 Memory in a Time of Prose investigates a deceptively straightforward question: what did the biblical scribes know about times previous to their own? Daniel D. Pioske attempts to answer this question by studying the sources, limits, and conditions of knowing that would have shaped biblical stories told about a past that preceded the composition of these writings by a generation or more. This book is comprised of a series of case studies that compare biblical references to an early Iron Age world (ca. 1175-830 BCE) with a wide range of archaeological and historical evidence from the era in which these stories are set. Pioske examines the relationship between the past disclosed through these historical traces and the past represented within the biblical narrative. He discovers that the knowledge available to the biblical scribes about this period derived predominantly from memory and word of mouth, rather than from a corpus of older narrative documents. For those Hebrew scribes who first set down these stories in prose writing, the means for knowing a past and the significance attached to it were, in short, wed foremost to the faculty of remembrance. Memory in a Time of Prose reveals how the past was preserved, transformed, or forgotten in the ancient world of oral, living speech that informed biblical storytelling. |

bible stories with liv: A Touch of Love from Heaven Angel Love, 2005-11 Standing in the Great Room at my home, I see a rainbow, appearing between the mirrors on my living room wall. I note that the six colors of the chakra system are in the correct sequence: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and lilac at the top of the rainbow. Looking at my watch, the time is 5:50 p.m. The rainbow disappears, and now, none can be seen. The time is 5:55 p.m. Next, almost immediately, two rainbows appear. The first one is on the back of the Great Room Wall to the right above the sofa while I stand there facing the mirrors. The second rainbow appears on the lamp. Both of them contain the six colors of the chakra system in the chronological order. I am left wondering if these visuals are the light of God giving me the go ahead for putting my writings into the hands of the people. Since the chakra system and the rainbow are both utilized in my writings, I believe this sign is from God and no accident. |

bible stories with liv: Subversive Sequels in the Bible Judy Klitsner, Gʼudi Ḳlitsner, 2011 In this remarkable exploration, Judy Klitsner deftly pairs biblical stories to show how a later text will often comment on, or even subvert an earlier one. Klitsner draws bold, surprising parallels between biblical passages, revealing previously unexcavated layers of meaning that will intrigue both novice and experienced readers of the Bible. Klitsner's original readings of familiar narratives illustrate the dynamic nature of biblical attitudes on issues of ongoing relevance to the modern human experience: the individual's relationship to God, gender relations, and the notion of the self. |

bible stories with liv: What Is Biblical Theology? James M. Hamilton Jr., 2013-11-30 Is the Bible just a random collection of old stories, or is there something more going on within the pages of Scripture? Is it possible that the ancient books of the Old and New Testaments are part of a single, unified story, begun long ago but extending into our world today? In this introduction to biblical theology, professor James Hamilton orients Bible readers afresh to the overarching story line of Scripture, helping Christians read and interpret the Bible as the biblical writers intended and as the early Christians read it. Examining Scripture's key symbols, patterns, and themes, Hamilton helps readers truly grasp—and be transformed by—the theology of redemption contained in God's Word. |
bible stories with liv: Change across Cultures Bruce Bradshaw, 2002-03-01 C. S. Lewis compared the task of ethical inquiry to sailing a fleet of ships; the primary task is avoiding collisions. When introducing cultural change, such collisions are inevitable. Bruce Bradshaw provides expert instruction for navigating these cultural clashes. Bradshaw contends that lasting change comes only through altering the stories by which people live. The Bible is the metanarrative whose altering theme of redemption forms a transcultural ethical basis. Aspects of God's redemption story can change how local cultures think and behave toward the environment, religions, government, gender identities, economics, science, and technology. However, effective change takes place only in a context of reconciliation, Christian community, and mutual learning. A must read for anyone engaged in or preparing for cross-cultural ministry, relief, or development work. The book is also relevant to students of ethics, philosophy, and theology. Numerous real-life examples illustrate the inevitable tensions that occur when cultures and narratives collide. |
bible stories with liv: Digging Through the Bible Richard A Freund, 2023-06-14 A “masterful and eminently readable” journey through the fascinating insights and revelations of Biblical archeology (Publishers Weekly, starred review). Many of our religious beliefs are based on faith alone, but archaeology gives us the opportunity to find evidence about what really happened in the distant past—evidence that can have a dramatic impact on what and how we believe. In Digging Through the Bible, archaeologist and rabbi Richard Freund takes readers through digs he has led in the Holy Land, searching for evidence about key biblical characters and events. Digging Through the Bible presents overviews of the evidence surrounding figures such as Moses, Kings David and Solomon, and Mary the mother of Jesus, as well as new information that can help us more fully understand the life and times in which these people would have lived. Freund also presents new evidence about finding the grave of the Teacher of Righteousness mentioned in the Dead Sea Scrolls, and gives a compelling argument about how the Exodus of the Israelites may have taken place in three separate waves over time, rather than in a single event as presented in the Bible. |
