African Pentecostalism is a diverse movement characterised by its emphases on Spirit baptism, divine healing, charismatic worship and eschatological expectations. This work investigates its eschatological systems in terms of its unrealised expectation of the second coming of Christ, and suggestions are presented for the movement to keep its eschatology at the heart of its impetus. This is accomplished through a hermeneutical awareness of the distinctiveness of Pentecostalism as a restorationist movement. Written for pastors, church leaders and believers, this book discusses the literalistic way of reading the Bible in most of the classical Pentecostal components of African Pentecostalism, supporting their premillennialist and even dispensational eschatological views. It suggests a new Pentecostal hermeneutics developed by scholarship in the past forty years, in line with significant elements of the way in which early Pentecostals read the Bible. bethel eschatology: Rock Doctrine Greg Anthony Crawford, 2024-07-05 When the Bible refers to Jesus as a “cornerstone,” what was the intended meaning behind this symbolic expression? Other literary references to rock and stone pervade the biblical narrative and provide metaphorical value to numerous subjects, including God, the temple, and the eschatological kingdom, to name a few. Does the use of a common metaphor reveal a theological connection between these various referents? Is there a progression of thought upon which each additional use of the metaphor expands? This book explores the stone testimonia of Scripture and provides insight into how the connective tissue of the rock metaphor informs the Christology and ecclesiology developed within the New Testament canon. Through examining the way in which New Testament authors interact with Old Testament passages, this study reveals a more comprehensive way in which to understand Christ and his church in relation to stone imagery. |

Developed over thirty years, Scott Hafemann's close reading of Paul's arguments, with an eye toward their OT/Jewish milieu, also advances the larger thesis that the various Israel/church, works/faith, and justification/judgment polarities in Paul's thinking do not represent a material contrast between a law-way and a gospel-way of relating to God. Rather, they epitomize an eschatological contrast between the character of God's people within the two eras of salvation history in which, by virtue of the Messiah and the Spirit, the Torah of the old covenant is now being kept in the new. |
