Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1860 edition. Excerpt: ... must be viewed as explanatory of the previous statement: And when the sixth hour was come (or while it was yet passing), there was darkness over all the land till the ninth hour. But Matthew, usiDg the method of computation which calculates the first hour of the day to be six o'clock in the morning, refers to the closing of the tragic scene, and states that it took place about the ninth hour, which corresponds with three o'clock in the afternoon. The evangelist John, adopting the same computation as Matthew, refers to the transactions immediately preceding the crucifixion, and says that they took place about the sixth hour. The conclusion at which we arrive is, that Jesus Christ was crucified about, or a little before twelve o'clock, and remained on the cross till three o'clock. Gerhardus and Eambach agree with this method of explaining the difficulty. So that the different statements are harmonised by taking into consideration the two different modes of computing the day, and by regarding the evangelist John's statement, as alluding to the beginning of the awful scene, and that of Matthew's as describing the close. The time of day when the solemn event transpired, was that in which the sun usually appeared in his greatest splendour. The moon was at her full, so that it was impossible there could be an eclipse of the sun at that time, from ordinary and natural causes. The miraculous darkness would, from this circumstance, be considered more extraordinary, than if it had occurred at any other part of the day. The closer the scrutiny of the sacred writings, the more satisfactory will the evidence of their verity appear. May our hearts, so little affected by the sufferings of Christ, be quickened and reproved by the ardour and...
bible difficulties explained: OVERCOMING BIBLE DIFFICULTIES Edward D. Andrews, 2015-08-04 The Bible is loaded with thousands of difficult, challenging passages, many of which become obstacles in the development of our faith. These difficulties arise out of differences in culture, language, religious and political organizations, not to mention between 2,000 to 3,500 years of separation between the Bible author and the modern day reader. Calling attention to these difficulties and sifting out the misconceptions, Andrews defends the full inerrancy of the Bible, clarifies the so-called errors and what might seem like apparent contradictions. He arms the Christian with what he or she needs to defend their faith in the Bible. OVERCOMING BIBLE DIFFICULTIES will help its readers Be prepared to make a defense (1 Peter 3:15)Reasoned from the Scriptures, explaining and proving (Acts 17:3)Contend for the faith (Jude 1:3)Help those who doubt (Jude 1:22-23)Speak Boldly in the Name of Jesus [Acts 9:27-28] OVERCOMING BIBLE DIFFICULTIES will also offer ten chapters on how to effectively evangelize those within their communities, be it neighbors, friends, family, or coworkers.   bible difficulties explained: THE HOLY BIBLE: Updated American Standard Version (UASV) Christian Publishing House, 2022-02-07 The Updated American Standard Version (UASV) is a literal translation. Translating from the original languages of Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek is a task unlike any other and should never be taken lightly. It carries with it the heaviest responsibility: the translator renders God’s thoughts into a modern language. What does that mean? It means that our primary purpose is to give the Bible readers what God said by way of his human authors, not what a translator thinks God meant in its place. In other words, our primary goal is to be accurate and faithful to the original text. The meaning of a word is the responsibility of the interpreter (i.e., reader), not the translator. The translator remains faithful to this literal translation philosophy unless it has been determined that the rendering will be misunderstood or misinterpreted. The translator is not tasked with making the text easy to read, but rather to make it as accurately faithful to the original as possible. UASV PURPOSE Our primary purpose is to give the Bible readers what God said by way of his human authors, not what a translator thinks God meant in its place.—Truth Matters! UASV GOAL Our primary goal is to be accurate and faithful to the original text. The meaning of a word is the responsibility of the interpreter (i.e., reader), not the translator.—Translating Truth! OUR RESOURCES The Updated American Standard Version will be one of the most faithful and accurate translations to date by Christian Publishing House. It will remain faithful to the original and what the authors penned. We will not go beyond the translator’s responsibility into the field of the interpreter. Removing the Outdated Passages with the Old English “thee’s” and “thou’s” etc. have been replaced with modern English. Many words and phrases that were extremely ambiguous or easily misunderstood since the 1901 ASV have been updated according to the best lexicons. Verses with difficult word order or vocabulary have been translated into correct English grammar and syntax, for easier reading. However, if the word order of the original conveyed meaning, it was kept. More Accurate The last 110+ years have seen the discovering of far more manuscripts, especially the papyri, with many manuscripts dating within 100 years of the originals. While making more accurate translation choices, we have stayed true to the literal translation philosophy of the ASV, while other literal translations abandon the philosophy far too often. The translator seeks to render the Scriptures accurately, without losing what the Bible author penned by changing what the author wrote, by distorting or embellishing through imposing what the translator believes the author meant into the original text. Accuracy in Bible translation is being faithful to what the original author wrote (the words that he used), as opposed to going beyond into the meaning, trying to determine what the author meant by his words. The latter is the reader’s job. The translator uses the most reliable, accurate critical texts (e.g., WH, NA, UBS, BHS, as well as the original language texts, versions, and other sources that will help him to determine the original reading. Why the Need for Updated Translations? New manuscript discoveries Changes in the language A better understanding of the original languages Improved insight into Bible translation

bible difficulties explained: EVANGELISM DISCIPLESHIP Benjamin Cocar, 2014-12-27 After the apostle Paul had done some tent making in Corinth with Aquila and Priscilla, Luke tells us at Acts 18:5, when Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul began devoting himself completely to the word, solemnly testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Christ. We note Paul began devoting himself completely. Why more so than before? Verses 9 and 10 go on to say, the Lord said to Paul in the night by a vision: 'Do not be afraid any longer, but go on speaking and do not be silent; for I am with you, and no man will attack you in order to harm you, for I have many people in this city.' We too have similar reasons for devoting ourselves 'more completely to the Word of God.' Yes, unquestionably, God has many people in all the cities throughout the world, including our community. These ones need to be discovered and 'taught everything Jesus commanded.' The wait for Jesus' second coming will not last forever, so we need to be awakened to our responsibility of proclaiming biblical truths, teaching, and making disciples of those who have a receptive heart.
bible difficulties explained: PAUL AND LUKE ON TRIAL Edward D. Andrews, 2020-03-25 The book PAUL AND LUKE ON TRIAL deals with their reputations, the authenticity, and the trustworthiness of their New Testament books (Acts and Galatians), which Bible critics have sought to undermine for centuries. Sadly, this attack also comes from “the new generation of evangelical scholars [who are] far more comfortable with ambiguity and uncertainty than previous generations.” (Wallace forward, Page xii) Herein the Bible critics and modern evangelical scholars are the prosecutors in this trial, and Andrews is serving as the Christian apologist in defense of the Apostle Paul and the disciple Luke. Andrews in PAUL AND LUKE ON TRIAL will briefly talk about Higher critics who have dissected the Word of God until it has become the word of man and a very jumbled word at that. Chapter one will look at how we can use legal terms to view Bible evidence objectively. Chapters 2 and 3 will lay more groundwork defining and dealing with Bible difficulties as it relates to the trial of Paul and Luke. A Brief historical overview of 36-49 C.E. in Chapter 4 apply all that we will have learned up unto this point in our defense of Paul and Luke. As a bonus, APPENDIX I is a chapter explaining Bible Difficulties, and APPENDIX II is a defense of the prophet Daniel and the book that bears his name.

bible difficulties explained: Biblical Studies on the Internet Roland H. Worth, Jr., 2008-09-18 The new edition includes more than 4,800 resources available at more than 10,000 Internet sites that provide information on a range of biblical study topics including Bible translations in English and other languages, audio translations of the Bible in English and other languages, commentaries, dictionaries, and other resource materials including ones in Greek, Hebrew and other ancient languages. The author also has adopted a new method of referencing and cataloging the most widely used web pages to facilitate a major expansion of resources without increasing the physical length of the book itself. In cases when ten or more resources are listed on a single web page, the author has assigned the web page a three-digit code. The code is used to identify this web page as a major resource within the main text, while any needed instructions for use of the site are cross-referenced separately in the final chapter. In adopting this concise method, the author was able to add hundreds of additional or updated web resources, a surprising number of which can be downloaded onto a hard drive for immediate and continued use.

bible difficulties explained: ISLAM & THE QURAN Edward D. Andrews, 2023-06-13 In his latest work, ISLAM & THE QURAN: Examining the Quran & Islamic Teachings, renowned scholar Edward D. Andrews delves into the intricacies of one of the world's most influential religions. This comprehensive study is an exploration of Islam, the Quran, and their impact on our world. Starting with the history of Islam, Andrews expertly traces the path from Muhammad's calling to the diverse, global community that follows this faith today. By investigating the role of the Quran, along with the hadiths and Islamic law, Andrews seeks to understand Islam's principles and the interpretations that have shaped its practices over time. The book further examines the Islamic teachings, the concept of abrogation, and the much-debated topic of Jihad. It critiques the teachings that contradict biblical texts and navigates through controversial areas with a scholarly precision that respects the sensitivity of the subject matter. In an analysis of the Quran, Andrews investigates its authenticity and supposed 'miracle.' Is it truly a divine revelation, or does it stem from human conception? He contrasts Quranic interpretation of Jesus and other biblical figures with those in the Bible, unravelling historical and archaeological validation of the scriptures along the way. From evaluating the Quran's internal harmony to understanding the meaning of Jihad, the book digs deep into the heart of Islam. It touches upon the various Muslim sects, their religious practices, and provides a comprehensive look at the punishment for apostasy in Islam. In addressing frequent Muslim criticisms against the New Testament, Andrews not only defends biblical accuracy but also delves into a detailed analysis of Bible difficulties, offering practical procedures for resolving them. Closing with an insightful examination of Islamic eschatology and the Nation of Islam and its unique beliefs, the book provides a glossary of technical terms and a bibliography for further study.
bible difficulties explained: MISREPRESENTING JESUS Edward D. Andrews, 2019-10-02 In Misrepresenting Jesus, the author thoroughly examines and refutes the arguments presented by Bart D. Ehrman in his bestselling book Misquoting Jesus. Through a comprehensive exploration of New Testament textual criticism, historical context, and the process of biblical interpretation, this book provides a compelling defense of the reliability and authenticity of the Christian Scriptures. Misrepresenting Jesus delves deep into the world of scribes, scrolls, and textual transmission, shedding light on the meticulous work of textual critics who endeavor to recover the original wording of the New Testament. The book also addresses the nature of textual corruption and the science behind restoring the original text, offering valuable insights into the methods and challenges of New Testament textual criticism. The author examines various types of errors found in New Testament manuscripts and explores the complex history of textual variants and their impact on the biblical text. Additionally, Misrepresenting Jesus offers practical solutions for understanding and resolving Bible difficulties, reaffirming the trustworthiness of the Scriptures despite apparent contradictions or inaccuracies. This book also takes on Ehrman's controversial claims about the origins and development of the New Testament canon, providing a thorough analysis of the differences between canonical and apocryphal gospels. Furthermore, it addresses the age-old problem of evil and suffering, offering a thoughtful Christian response to these challenging questions. Misrepresenting Jesus stands as a comprehensive and rigorous rebuttal to Ehrman's arguments, providing readers with a deeper understanding of the reliability and divine inspiration of the New Testament. With its scholarly approach and clear presentation, this book is an invaluable resource for anyone seeking to defend the integrity and authenticity of the Christian faith.

bible difficulties explained: THE QUEST FOR THE HISTORICAL JESUS Edward D. Andrews, 2022-09-04 Jesus’ teachings have affected the lives of billions. What do both modern and ancient authorities say about Jesus Christ’s existence? What is the solid basis that scholars have for believing that Jesus existed? What references have first- and second-century historians made to Jesus and the early Christians? In 2006, the book Jesus and Archaeology said: “No reputable scholar today questions that a Jew named Jesus son of Joseph lived; most readily admit that we now know a considerable amount about his actions and his basic teachings.” What is the historical evidence that Jesus Christ lived and died? What is the proof of the resurrection of Jesus? Herein we will not shy away from the Bible critic’s claim as we investigate the historical authenticity of Jesus Christ and the claim that he was raised from the dead.
bible difficulties explained: Understanding Hebrew Idiomatic & Figurative Language Troy J. Edwards, 2023-01-10 Does God hate certain people or does He love everyone? Is He jealous of anyone? Does He struggle with anger? Is He looking for people to be terrified of Him? Is He self-centered and vindictive? Can He be provoked easily? Does He lead people astray? Is He punishing children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren for the sins of their forefathers? Some argue that the Bible teaches that God is the one who accomplishes all of this. Sadly, some have reached these incorrect conclusions because they were unable to appreciate the figurative and idiomatic language of Scripture. This book, “Understanding Hebrew Idiomatic & Figurative Language,” teaches us how portrayals of God, when examined from the perspective of the Ancient Near Eastern culture from which Scripture was written, give us a truly stunning image of the God who is exactly like Jesus.
