benziger family life 5: My Crazy Life , 2002 What does it feel like when the adult members of a family are too preoccupied or self-absorbed to act as parents? What is life like for kids who grow up in a family where alcoholism is a daily reality, where separation and divorce hang like a cloud over daily life? In these situations it is too often the teen who assumes much of the responsibility and has to grow up quickly amidst the struggle to maintain even a semblance of stability. My Crazy Life presents the voices of ten teens who have lived through these situations. Rather than despair, you will hear these young people talking about how they coped and survived. One girl found strength through friendships and her sibling relationships. Another girl, abused by her alcoholic father, tells how her commitment to art and a sympathetic teacher gave value to her life. The Afterword by the head of psychiatry at a metropolitan children’s hospital provides guidance to those seeking help. |

benziger family life 5: Biodynamic Wine Demystified Nicolas Joly, 2001-05-01 Wine is made in the vineyard is the mantra of many a winemaker. But what does it mean, really? Esteemed winemaker and biodynamic pioneer Nicholas Joly believes a wine that is well-made in the vineyard must express its unique terroir—the character imbued by a vine's particular plot of well-tended earth. In Biodynamic Wine, Demystified, Joly shares the core philosophy behind biodynamic viticulture and why such practices result in wines of regional distinction. This process treats the vineyard as a self-perpetuating ecological whole influenced not only by terrestrial forces but those of the sun, moon and cosmos. He explains why the use of foreign substances such as pesticides and fertilizers in the vineyard, and aromatic yeasts and enzymes in the cellar, as well as mechanisms such as electric motors and pumps, disrupt this synergy and are ultimately counterproductive to a wine's best, consistent expression. |

benziger family life 5: Finding the Hero in Your Husband, Revisited Juli Slattery, 2021-10-19 Women know how to work hard at marriage. Often their efforts end up sabotaging rather than building intimacy. Do you want to understand why? In this rewrite of her bestseller Finding the Hero in Your Husband, acclaimed Christian clinical psychologist and speaker Dr. Juli Slattery gently guides women through topics that are inherently woven into every imperfect marriage. Finding the Hero in Your Husband, Revisited, challenges misconceptions and outright misinformation that have misguided women for decades. In truth, women have power in marriage-but they don't often know how to use it. Illustrated with insightful real-life case examples, this book is both an educational resource as well as a practical how-to guide for navigating everyday trials as well as deeper difficulties. Juli offers understandable explanations of God's design, healthy expectations that re-frame experiences, and relatable applications that women of faith can practice to influence their marriage and deepen their relationship with God. Finding the Hero in Your Husband, Revisited, will help you more clearly see and encourage the hero within your husband by examining your own heart. Book jacket. |

benziger family life 5: Sex Education Randy Engel, 1993-09 Proves why classroom sex education is always wrong and always harmful; that it destroys modesty; awakens the passions; promotes sexual activity and fosters acceptance of sexual sins. Shows where it comes from; who promotes it; that it is all-pervasive. Gives the Church's position; that sex education is the right and duty of parents only; which may be delegated to others; but never usurped! A must for parents; teachers and priests. |

benziger family life 5: Loved as I Am Sr. Miriam James Heidland SOLT, 2014-11-03 When Sr. Miriam James Heidland’s life as a successful college athlete proved unfulfilling, she went searching for something deeper and ended up falling in love with Jesus. By charting her own journey toward wholeness, Heidland invites young Catholics to pursue their own relationship with Jesus. Although originally full of athletic ambition and goals for a career in sports news, Heidland was transformed in a very slow but deep way during her undergraduate years, moving from party girl to bride of Christ. In Loved as I Am: An Invitation to Conversion, Healing, and Freedom through Jesus, Heidland helps readers learn from her experience of seeking love in the wrong places and instead finding it in Christ. She shares her struggles—learning she was adopted, battling alcoholism, and healing from childhood sexual abuse—as signs of hope that anyone who desires to know Christ can find him and be loved intimately by him in return. By bringing readers into Heidland’s healing process, Loved as I Am provides a gentle and subtle template for finding peace and freedom in Jesus. |

benziger family life 5: The Impact of the Family John Witte, Michael Welker, Stephen Pickard, 2022-02-22 The family is humanity's oldest and most basic social institution, but today it is fragile, fractured, and fraught in many liberal lands. This volume gathers scholars from sociology, psychology, history, religion, ethics, law, and medicine from five continents to analyze the complex nature and place of the family in character formation and human flourishing. The chapters study the impact of catechesis, schooling, work, and discipline on the development of individual moral agency and responsibility. They document the critical roles of family love, trust, fidelity, and story-telling in shaping the moral character of all family members from infancy to old age. They describe effective strategies of resistance and resilience for family members who face abuse, divorce, death, chauvinism, racism, and homophobia. And several chapters challenge modern arguments and policies that aim to flatten if not abolish the marital family, even while they call for family law reforms. Contributions by Enola G. Aird, Helen Alvaré, Robert N. Bellah, Margaret Jane Brining, Michael J. Broyde, Marcia Bunge, Stephen Carter, Jean Bethke Elshtain, Robyn Fivuush, Patrick Hornbeck, Andreas Kruse, Nadia Marais, Gordon Mikoski, Bonnie Miller-McLemore, Patrick Parkinson, Katja Patzel-Mattern, Sabina Pauen, Stephen G. benziger family life 5: Arts of Possession D. Vance Smith, 2003 An innovative work of both economic anthropology and literary history, Arts of Possession draws on philosophical, theoretical, literary, historical, and archival sources and insights to situate the household at the center of the social and cultural imagination of fourteenth-century England. D. Vance Smith argues that in a period commonly represented as precapitalist there actually existed a sophisticated economic discourse -- and that discourse underlies common forms of representation and the writing of literary texts. His work provides a new historiography of capital and of the development of the relation between economic sophistication and cultural practices. Smith reads well-known and less-appreciated works -- such as Winner and Waster, Sir Launfal, The Canterbury Tales, and Piers Plowman -- for what they can tell us about the surpluses and economies that drew the medieval imagination, and about the complex ethics of possession at the heart of the fourteenth-century household. In bringing this to light, Smith's book itself becomes an eloquent meditation on the poetics and ethics of possession. |

benziger family life 5: Holistic Religious Education - is it possible? Sturla Sagberg, 2015 This book discusses the possibility of a holistic approach to religious education, taking into account religious and cultural diversity, different aspects of secularisation and different academic disciplines that inform the subject. Issues discussed are the view of children as spiritual and religious subjects, identity formation, the concept of child theology, the relationship between faith and morality, the meaning of spirituality, the notion of wonder as an inroad to learning, religion as culture, and the meaning of holism. A point of departure is taken in a typology of attitudes to religion in public education, and the line of reason ends in a search for viable metaphors for holistic religious education. Sturla Sagberg (born 1951) is professor of religious education and ethics at Queen Maud University College of Early Childhood Education in Trondhem, Norway. He has a doctoral degree in theology, and has for many decades taught and done research related to teacher training as well as to church education. He has published several books in Norwegian, of which the latest translates into Religion, Values and Formation: Children and the big questions in life. Many of his articles in books and journals are written in English. |

benziger family life 5: The Book of Hebrews George Wesley Buchanan, 2006-07-17 How fitting it is that after some thirty-five years since the appearance of his original Anchor Bible Commentary on Hebrews Professor George Wesley Buchanan again turns his hand to this challenging document of early Christianity--now as an intertextual commentary. Here he further elaborates upon his novel thesis that Hebrews 1-12 is a midrashic sermon based on Psalm 110, giving special attention throughout to its frequent use of scripture. The commentary in a way represents vintage Buchanan. It is at once fresh, bold, provocative, suggestive, learned, and filled with helpful insight. Buchanan is equally conversant with ancient sources and modern scholarship, including recent archaeology. His masterful knowledge of Judaism, displayed in many publications over the years, pays rich dividends in the commentary. Buchanan is never dull, never predictable. Never does one have the feeling that one is getting things second hand; on the contrary, it is continually evident that one is reading the result of a direct, fresh encounter with the text. Above all, Buchanan does what he also asks his readers to do: Think for yourself! Knowledge, after all, will not progress if one accepts only traditional and settled opinions on everything. This is anything but just another commentary on Hebrews. It will engage and challenge readers as very few commentaries do! Therefore, I am happy to recommend it! Donald A. Hagner George Eldon Ladd Professor of New Testament, Fuller Theological Seminary |

benziger family life 5: Seasons of Grace Leslie Woodcock Tentler, 2018-02-05 Seasons of Grace is a history of the Catholic Church and community in southern lower Michigan from the 1830s through the 1950s. Seasons of Grace is a history of the Catholic Church and community in southern lower Michigan from the 1830s through the 1950s. More than a chronicle of clerical successions and institutional expansion, the book also examines those social and cultural influences that affected the development of the Catholic community. To document the course of institutional growth in the diocese, Tentler devotes a portion of the book to tracing the evolution of administrative structures at the Chancery and the founding of parishes, parochial schools, and social welfare organizations. Substantial attention is also given to the social history of the Catholic community, reflected in changes in religious practice, parish life and governance, and the role of women in church organizations and in devotional activities. Tentler also discusses the issue of Catholics in state and local politics and Catholic practice with regard to abortion, contraception, and intermarriage. |
