| book of al tawasin: Names, Natures and Things Syed Nomanul Haq, 2012-12-06 Jabir ibn Hayyan, for a long time the reigning alchemical authority both in Islam and the Latin West, has exercised numerous generations of scholars. To be sure, it is not only the vexed question of the historical authorship and dating of the grand corpus Jabirianum which poses a serious scholarly challenge; equally challenging is the task of unraveling all those obscure and tantalizing discourses which it contains. This book, which marks the first full-scale study of Jabir ever to be published in the English language, takes up both challenges. The author begins by critically reexamining the historical foundations of the prevalent view that the Jabirian corpus is the work not of an 8th-century individual, but that of several generations of Shi'i authors belonging to the following century and later. Tentatively concluding that this view is problematic, the author, therefore, infers that its methodological implications are also problematic. Thus, developing its own methodological matrix, the book takes up the second challenge, namely that of a substantive analysis and explication of a Jabirian discourse, the Book of Stones. Here explicating Jabir's notions of substance and qualities, analyzing his ontological theory of language and unraveling the metaphysics of his Science of Balance, the author reconstructs the doctrinal context of the Stones and expounds its central theme. He then presents an authoritative critical edition of a substantial selection of the text of the Stones, based on all available manuscripts. This critical edition has been translated in its entirety and is provided with exhaustive commentaries and textual notes -- another pioneering feature of this book: for this is the first English translation of a Jabirian text to emerge in print after a whole century. An outstanding contribution is that it announces and presents an exciting textual discovery: the author has found in the Stones a hitherto unknown Arabic translation of part of Aristotle's Categories. These rituals commemorate an event of vital importance to Shia Muslims: the seventh-century death of the Imam Husain, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, at the battlefield of Karbala in Iraq. Pinault examines three different forms of ritual commemoration of Husain's death - poetry-recital and self-flagellation in Hyderabad; stick-fighting in Darjeeling; and the 'Horse of Karbala' procession, in which a stallion representing the mount ridden in battle by Husain is made the center of a public parade in Ladakh and other Indian localities. NESIMI (1369-1417) is considered one of the greatest Sufi poets and one of the most prominent early masters in Turkish literary history. Very little is known for certain about his life, including his real name. It is also possible that he was descended from the Prophet Mohammed since he has sometimes been accorded the title of seyyid that is reserved for people claimed to be in Muhammad's line of descent. From his poetry, it's evident that Nesimi was greatly influenced by MANSUR AL-HALLAJ and as a direct result of his beliefs that were considered blasphemous by contemporary religious authorities he was seized and according to most accounts... skinned alive in Aleppo. A number of legends later grew up around his execution, such as the story that he mocked his executioners with improvised verse and, after the execution, draped his flayed skin around his shoulders and departed. His tomb in Aleppo remains an important place of pilgrimage to this day. His work consists of two collections of poems, one in Persian and the other, Turkish. The Turkish Divan consists of 250-300 gazels and about 150 roba'is. After his death his work continued to exercise a great influence on many Turkish language poets and authors. During his study in Europe, Iqbal began to write poetry. He prioritized it because he believed he had found an easy way to express his thoughts. The poetry and philosophy of Rumi bore the deepest influence on his mind. Iqbal's poetry has been translated into many languages, at the time when his work was famous during the early part of the 20th century. He died in 1937. Many of Iqbal's ghazals resemble those of Hafiz and it is through the rhymes and metres he inherited from Hafiz, Ghalib and others, that he expounded his philosophy of Action and the realization of the 'Self'. Iqbal wrote one of the more recent Saqi-namas (a form perfected by Hafiz) in masnavi form in Urdu. 'The central theme of the poem is Muslim Renaissance.
