becoming god's true woman: The Making of Biblical Womanhood Beth Allison Barr, 2021-04-20 USA TODAY BESTSELLER It is time for Christian patriarchy to end. Biblical womanhood--the belief that God designed women to be submissive wives, virtuous mothers, and joyful homemakers--pervades North American Christianity. From choices about careers to roles in local churches to relationship dynamics, this belief shapes the everyday lives of evangelical women. Yet biblical womanhood isn't biblical, says historian Beth Allison Barr. It arose from a series of clearly definable historical moments. Barr presents historical insights and shares a better way forward for the contemporary church by ● giving context for contemporary teachings about women's roles in the church ● explaining why biblical womanhood is more about human power structures than the message of Christ ● interweaving her story and experiences as a Baptist pastor's wife ● shedding light on the #ChurchToo movement and abuse scandals in Southern Baptist circles and the broader evangelical world This book moves the conversation about biblical womanhood beyond Greek grammar and into the realm of church history--ancient, medieval, and modern--to show that this belief is not divinely ordained but a product of human civilization that continues to creep into the church. A powerful work of skillful research and personal insight.--Publishers Weekly Christianity Today 2022 Book Award Finalist (History & Biography) ● Foreword INDIES 2021 Finalist for Religion |

becoming god's true woman: Becoming Women of the Word Sarah Christmyer, 2019-08-02 Winner of a 2020 Catholic Press Association book award (third place, scripture-popular studies). The women God called to bring his chosen people into the world were ordinary women who struggled with emptiness, oppression, infertility, and loss—yet who found strength and hope in God. In her first book, Sarah Christmyer—codeveloper of The Great Adventure Catholic Bible study program—pairs the stories of key Old Testament women with stories of women she has known to show us how we can hear God, say yes to his call, and share him with the world just as they did. Breaking open the scriptures to reveal the historical, cultural, and biblical context in which Old Testament women lived, Sarah Christmyer breathes new life into their stories and makes their lives surprisingly relatable. In the process, she shares stories from her own faith journey and the lives of family and friends to show how the same principles that turned ordinary women into heroines of the faith are true for our lives today. Each chapter of Becoming Women of the Word highlights the spiritual legacy of one or more women in the Old Testament. Their world was vastly different from ours, yet they faced the same questions we do: when we can’t feel God’s presence, where do we find help? When our world is collapsing, where is God? Why should we trust him? How can we trust him? Christmyer simply and clearly draws from the lives of these women important principles that help us to trust—even as we struggle with doubt. For example: Through Eve, we learn to hold on to God’s promise even when we fail. Sarah reminds us to wait on God’s timing to make us fruitful. Miriam, the sister of Moses, shows how to lead by example. Ruth and Esther challenge us to see womanhood as a gift. Hannah and Judith inspire us to trust God even in matters of life and death. These unforgettable portraits create a colorful mosaic of faith, encouraging us to mine God’s Word for spiritual treasure and to pass on the gift. |
becoming god's true woman: Becoming Myself Stasi Eldredge, 2013-08-01 God has dreams—just for you Becoming Myself is a hope-filled book for anyone who wonders if her life will ever change—if she will ever change. In Stasi Eldredge’s most intimate book yet, she shares her own struggles with self-worth, weight, and her past as she shows readers how God is faithfully unveiling who we truly are. Stasi urges you to lay down your past thoughts about yourself and receive God’s incredible dreams for you instead. We cannot heal ourselves. We cannot become ourselves by ourselves. But we are not by ourselves. The King of love wants to help us become. God desires to restore us—the real us. As he heals our inner life, he calls us to rise to the occasion of our lives. The most important journey any woman can take is the journey into becoming her true self through the love of God. It's a beautiful paradox. The more of God’s you become, the more yourself you become—the “self” he had in mind when he thought of you before the creation of the world. Discover your truest self—the woman God created you to be—in Becoming Myself. |

becoming god's true woman: How God Becomes Real T.M. Luhrmann, 2022-04-26 The hard work required to make God real, how it changes the people who do it, and why it helps explain the enduring power of faith How do gods and spirits come to feel vividly real to people—as if they were standing right next to them? Humans tend to see supernatural agents everywhere, as the cognitive science of religion has shown. But it isn’t easy to maintain a sense that there are invisible spirits who care about you. In How God Becomes Real, acclaimed anthropologist and scholar of religion T. M. Luhrmann argues that people must work incredibly hard to make gods real and that this effort—by changing the people who do it and giving them the benefits they seek from invisible others—helps to explain the enduring power of faith. Drawing on ethnographic studies of evangelical Christians, pagans, magicians, Zoroastrians, Black Catholics, Santeria initiates, and newly orthodox Jews, Luhrmann notes that none of these people behave as if gods and spirits are simply there. Rather, these worshippers make strenuous efforts to create a world in which invisible others matter and can become intensely present and real. The faithful accomplish this through detailed stories, absorption, the cultivation of inner senses, belief in a porous mind, strong sensory experiences, prayer, and other practices. Along the way, Luhrmann shows why faith is harder than belief, why prayer is a metacognitive activity like therapy, why becoming religious is like getting engrossed in a book, and much more. A fascinating account of why religious practices are more powerful than religious beliefs, How God Becomes Real suggests that faith is resilient not because it provides intuitions about gods and spirits—but because it changes the faithful in profound ways. |

becoming god's true woman: Heavy Burdens Bridget Eileen Rivera, 2021-10-26 Religious faith reduces the risk of suicide for virtually every American demographic except one: LGBTQ people. Generations of LGBTQ people have been alienated or condemned by Christian communities. It's past time that Christians confronted the ongoing and devastating effects of this legacy. Many LGBTQ people face overwhelming challenges in navigating faith, gender, and sexuality. Christian communities that uphold the traditional sexual ethic often unwittingly make the path more difficult through unexamined attitudes and practices. Drawing on her sociological training and her leadership in the Side B/Revoice conversation, Bridget Eileen Rivera, who founded the popular website Meditations of a Traveling Nun, speaks to the pain of LGBTQ Christians and helps churches develop a better pastoral approach. Rivera calls to mind Jesus's woe to religious leaders: They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on the shoulders of others; but they themselves are unwilling to lift a finger to move them (Matt. 23:4). Heavy Burdens provides an honest account of seven ways LGBTQ people experience discrimination in the church, helping Christians grapple with hard realities and empowering churches across the theological spectrum to navigate better paths forward. |

becoming god's true woman: The True Woman Susan Hunt, 1997-01 What a Friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry Everything to God in prayer. O, what peace we often forfeit O, what needless pain we bear-- All because we do not carry Everything to God in prayer. --Joseph Scriven The man who wrote this famous 19th-century hymn was familiar with loneliness. He fought it all his life. It was after one bout with depression that he wrote the words to this song. What he had discovered was the reality of friendship with Jesus Christ. He knew that because Jesus lived upon earth as a man, He understands our feelings. He knows what it is like to be lonely. He suffered the pain of rejection and cruelty, and felt hunger and thirst. The Bible describes Him as a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief (Isaiah 53:3). Yet Jesus did more than sympathize with our troubles. He knew that the root of our problem is sin. The Bible says that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God, and that the wages of sin is death (Romans 3:23; 6:23). But He (God) hath made Him (Christ), who knew no sin, to be sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him (2 Corinthians 5:21). Jesus Christ, God the Son, died on the cross, and rose from the dead on the third day. God gives all those who know Jesus Christ as Savior the right to call God, Father (Romans 8:15). Christ has promised that He will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). He does not promise an easy life, but He gives us the privilege of taking everything to God in prayer and knowing that He hears, and will answer us (1 John 5:15). Through His Spirit He offers inner peace and strength. All that God requires is that you and I turn from our sins (repent) and receive Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus Christ, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved (Romans 10:9). To believe in Christ means you acknowledge that there is nothing you can do to be good enough to meet God's holy standard. Christ alone made the perfect sacrifice to put away your sin. Have you received Jesus Christ as your Savior? If not, you can right now. Tell God that you are sorry for your sins. Thank Him for sending His Son to die for you, and invite Him into your life. |
