baburu keiki: Law and Justice in Japanese Popular Culture Ashley Pearson, Thomas Giddens, Kieran Tranter, 2018-06-27 In a world of globalised media, Japanese popular culture has become a signifi cant fountainhead for images, narrative, artefacts, and identity. From Pikachu, to instantly identifi able manga memes, to the darkness of adult anime, and the hyper- consumerism of product tie- ins, Japan has bequeathed to a globalised world a rich variety of ways to imagine, communicate, and interrogate tradition and change, the self, and the technological future. Within these foci, questions of law have often not been far from the surface: the crime and justice of Astro Boy; the property and contract of Pokémon; the ecological justice of Nausicaä; Shinto’s focus on order and balance; and the anxieties of origins in J- horror. This volume brings together a range of global scholars to refl ect on and critically engage with the place of law and justice in Japan’s popular cultural legacy. It explores not only the global impact of this legacy, but what the images, games, narratives, and artefacts that comprise it reveal about law, humanity, justice, and authority in the twenty-first century.
baburu keiki: Visions of Precarity in Japanese Popular Culture and Literature Kristina Iwata-Weickgenannt, Roman Rosenbaum, 2014-11-27 Recent natural as well as man-made cataclysmic events have dramatically changed the status quo of contemporary Japanese society, and following the Asia-Pacific war’s never-ending ‘postwar’ period, Japan has been dramatically forced into a zeitgeist of saigo or ‘post-disaster.’ This radically new worldview has significantly altered the socio-political as well as literary perception of one of the world’s potential superpowers, and in this book the contributors closely examine how Japan’s new paradigm of precarious existence is expressed through a variety of pop-cultural as well as literary media. Addressing the transition from post-war to post-disaster literature, this book examines the rise of precarity consciousness in Japanese socio-cultural discourse. The chapters investigate the extent to which we can talk about the emergence of a new literary paradigm of precarity in the world of Japanese popular culture. Through careful examination of a variety of contemporary texts ranging from literature, manga, anime, television drama and film this study offers an interpretation of the many dissonant voices in Japanese society. The contributors also outline the related social issues in Japanese society and culture, providing a comprehensive overview of the global trends that link Japan with the rest of the world. Visions of Precarity in Japanese Popular Culture and Literature will be of great interest to students and scholars of contemporary Japan, Japanese culture and society, popular culture and social and cultural history.
baburu keiki: Precarious Youth in Contemporary Graphic Narratives María Porras Sánchez, Gerardo Vilches, 2022-09-26 This volume explores comics as examples of moral outrage in the face of a reality in which precariousness has become an inherent part of young lives. Taking a thematic approach, the chapters devote attention to the expression and representation of precarious subjectivities, as well as to the economic and professional precarity that characterizes comics creation and production. An international team of authors, young and senior systematically examines the representation of precarious youth in graphic fiction and autobiographic comics, superheroes and precarity, market issues and spaces of activism and vulnerability. With this structure, the book offers a global perspective and comprehensive coverage of different aspects of a complex and multifaceted field of knowledge, with a special attention to minorities and liminal subjects. The comics analyzed function as examples of ethical solicitation that bear witness of the precarious existence younger generations endure, while at the same time creating images that voice their outrage and might move readers to act. This timely and truly interdisciplinary volume will appeal to comics scholars and researchers in the areas of media and cultural studies, modern languages, education, art and design, communication studies, sociology, medical humanities and more.

baburu keiki: Prevention and Crisis Management Steven Rosefielde, 2013 This book highlights the future threat to Asia from a broader perspective that takes account of the Japanese and Asian financial crises during the 1990s as well as the global crisis of 2008. It reveals that Asian crises take many diverse forms, and that the solutions devised to date have only been locally and not universally effective. Policymakers are accordingly advised to always plan for the element of surprise.
baburu keiki: Reforms During Coalition Governments in Japan a Study Since 1990 Dr. Mahendra Prakash, In Japan, the political instability in the late 1980s, has led many adaptations and this has directly affected the policy execution in the economic and social sector since 1990. The political development in Japan was associated with the development of modernity initiated in the Meiji period, which created a space not only for the political development, however for the prosperous economy as well. The post war years saw the influence of Allied Powers and after the World War II, the leading political party, Liberal Democratic Party continued as the longest ruling party. The era of single party rule led to political stability and economic wonders in Japan until the late 1980s. With the passage of time, disreputable political activities influenced the social, political and economic arrangements. In addition to this, the aging population of Japan, led the labor shortage and for the subsequent demand to adopt the welfare policies earliest. After the year 1990, it was essential to reform the malfunctioned political system, the economic outlook as well as the social sector. The reform implementation by the coalition governments, which began in early 1990s, is continue. This book dealing with the exploration of political changes in Japan and contains six chapters. Each chapter validates the title of the book. The analysis of the events has been explained in chronological order, wherever required and appendices attached for the explanatory and statistical reference. Hope this book will be helpful to all readers in understanding the operative nature and state of affairs of Japanese politics as well as the coalition government. Suggestions from the readers, scholars and experts, shall be appreciated

baburu keiki: Japanese Cinema and Punk Mark Player, 2025-05-15 In Japanese Cinema and Punk, Mark Player examines how the do-it-yourself ethos of punk empowered a new generation of Japanese filmmakers during a period of crisis and change in Japan's film industry. Drawing on rare materials and first-hand interviews with key figures from the jishu eiga (self-made film) tradition, including Ishii Gakuryu (formerly Ishii Sogo), Yamamoto Masashi, Tsukamoto Shin'ya, and Fukui Shozin, Player explores how punk's bricolage style was leveraged to create exciting intermedial film aesthetics. These aesthetics were influenced by rock music, graffiti art, street performance, handmade animation, television, and other mass media. By considering the practical, phenomenological, and political ramifications of combining diverse media elements, Player offers in-depth analyses of films such as Burst City (1982), Robinson's Garden (1987), Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989), and more. He further traces the changing sociocultural position of Japan's punk generation throughout the 1980s-from its euphoric early-80s peak to the growing disillusionment caused by its mainstream co-optation and convergence.
baburu keiki: Japanese Film and the Challenge of Video Tom Mes, 2023-05-19 This book explores the phenomenon of V-Cinema, founded in Japan in 1989 as a distribution system for direct-to-video movies which film companies began making having failed to recoup their investment in big budget films. It examines how studios and directors worked quickly to capitalize on niche markets or upcoming and current trends, and how as a result this period of history in Japanese cinema was an exceptionally diverse and vibrant film scene. It highlights how, although the V-Cinema industry declined from around 1995, the explosion in quantity and variety of such movies established and cemented many specific genres of Japanese film. Importantly the book argues that film scholars who have long looked down on video as a substandard medium without scholarly interest have been wrong to do so, and that V-Cinema challenges accepted notions of cultural value, providing insight into the formation of cinematic canons and inviting us to rethink what is meant by Japanese cinema.
baburu keiki: The Price of Time Edward Chancellor, 2022-08-16 Winner of the 2023 Hayek Book Prize Longlisted for the 2022 Financial Times Business Book of the Year Award A comprehensive and profoundly relevant history of interest from one of the world’s leading financial writers, The Price of Time explains our current global financial position and how we got here In the beginning was the loan, and the loan carried interest. For at least five millennia people have been borrowing and lending at interest. The practice wasn’t always popular—in the ancient world, usury was generally viewed as exploitative, a potential path to debt bondage and slavery. Yet as capitalism became established from the late Middle Ages onwards, denunciations of interest were tempered because interest was a necessary reward for lenders to part with their capital. And interest performs many other vital functions: it encourages people to save; enables them to place a value on precious assets, such as houses and all manner of financial securities; and allows us to price risk. All economic and financial activities take place across time. Interest is often described as the “price of money,” but it is better called the “price of time:” time is scarce, time has value, interest is the time value of money. Over the first two decades of the twenty-first century, interest rates have sunk lower than ever before. Easy money after the global financial crisis in 2007/2008 has produced several ill effects, including the appearance of multiple asset price bubbles, a reduction in productivity growth, discouraging savings and exacerbating inequality, and forcing yield starved investors to take on excessive risk. The financial world now finds itself caught between a rock and a hard place, and Edward Chancellor is here to tell us why. In this enriching volume, Chancellor explores the history of interest and its essential function in determining how capital is allocated and priced.
baburu keiki: Effective Enforcement of Creditors’ Rights Masahisa Deguchi, 2021-11-27 The problem of enforcing a money judgment exists in every legal system in the world, but the methods and orientation vary significantly. Effective enforcement proceedings are crucial to ensure full access to justice for creditors. Complete and full knowledge of the debtors’ assets is crucial to choose the appropriate enforcement measure. But each legal system must balance the creditors’ rights to an efficient enforcement with the debtors’ rights. The wide differences between enforcement proceedings mirror the way each society tries to find a balance between confronting rights and interests. This book explores and compares how different legal systems approach these issues with a focus on the discovery of debtors’ assets, which is a common problem for enforcement and execution proceedings in almost every jurisdiction. This is the first book to compare enforcement proceedings around the world and presents a variety of information and country reports from leading experts from four continents. It represents the joint work of academic and legal authorities from Germany, Japan, Korea, France, the UK, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Poland, Russia, Greece, North America, Taiwan, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and the EU.
baburu keiki: Exporting Japanese Aesthetics Tets Kimura, Jennifer Harris, 2020-05-04 Exporting Japanese Aesthetics brings together historical and contemporary case studies addressing the evolution of international impacts and influences of Japanese culture and aesthetics. The volume draws on a wide range of examples from a multidisciplinary team of scholars exploring transnational, regional and global contexts. Studies include the impact of traditional Japanese theatre and art through to the global popularity of contemporary anime and manga. Under the banner of soft power or Cool Japan, cultural commodities that originate in Japan have manifested new meanings outside Japan. By (re)mapping meanings of selected Japanese cultural forms, this volume offers an in-depth examination of how various aspects of Japanese aesthetics have evolved as exportable commodities, the motivations behind this diffusion, and the extent to which the process of diffusion has been the result of strategic planning. Each chapter presents a case study that explores perspectives that situate Japanese aesthetics within a wide-ranging field of inquiry including performance, tourism, and visual arts, as well as providing historical contexts. The importance of interrogating the export of Japanese aesthetics is validated at the highest levels of government, which formed the Office of Cool Japan in 2010, and which perhaps originated in the 19th century at governmentally endorsed cultural courts at world fairs. Increased international consumption of contemporary Japanese culture provides a much needed boost to Japans weakening economy. The case studies are timely and topical. As host of the 2020/2021 Tokyo Olympic Games and the 2025 Osaka Expo, Cool Japan will be under special scrutiny.
baburu keiki: Ageing with Smartphones in Japan Laura Haapio-Kirk, 2024-08-29 Older adults in Japan, one of the most ageing countries in the world, are starting to adopt the smartphone. What does this mean for friendship, gendered labour, multigenerational living, internal migration, health and indeed purpose in life (ikigai)? Based on 16 months of ethnographic research in urban Kyoto and in rural Kōchi Prefecture, Ageing with Smartphones in Japan follows people as they navigate social and personal shifts post-retirement. Examining how older women and men negotiate oppressive structures within society, the smartphone emerges as both challenging and perpetuating gender-based norms around care. In witnessing the response of older adults to the wider context of societal ageing and the various forms of precarity that it can engender, this book observes how people creatively navigate the challenges and opportunities of later life to define their own experience of ageing. The rise of digital visual communication among people in their 50s and older opens new possibilities for sociality and proximity among friends and family. It also presents a methodological challenge for researchers. This book responds with a series of graphic methodological experimentations, including co-created comics, participant drawings, and the author’s own fieldwork sketches and imaginative illustrations, to explore this fundamental shift in communication towards digital images. Praise for Ageing with Smartphones in Japan ‘An excellent and thoughtful book on ageing in Japan, focusing on the use of smartphones, but not limited to it. The truly innovative use of graphic and multimodal ethnography is not only effective but also showcases such methods for others.’ Iza Kavedžija, University of Cambridge ‘Highly original, extensively researched and thought-provoking, Haapio-Kirk rewards the reader with lively story-telling and beautifully crafted images that invite another level of sensory and emotional engagement – an impressive achievement.’ Jason Danely, Oxford Brookes University

baburu keiki: Return Migration Decisions Ruth Achenbach, 2016-10-21 Ruth Achenbach develops a model of individual return migration decision making, which examines both the process and the decisive factors in return migration decision making of Chinese highly skilled workers and students in Japan. She proposes to answer a question yet insufficiently explained by migration research: why do migrants deviate from their migration intentions and return sooner or later than planned, or not at all? Her study integrates factors from the spheres of career, family and lifestyle, and redefines stages in long-term decision-making processes, thereby contributing to decision and migration theory. She analyzes migrants’ shifting priorities over the course of migration, including a perspective on life course and on the impact of the triple catastrophe of March 11, 2011.

baburu keiki: Foundations of Quantitative Happiness Weisheng Zhou, Xiangwei Lin, Xuepeng Qian, 2025-01-27 This book is a rarity in that it conducts a comparative study of life satisfaction between Japan and China over a wider area and time period, filling a gap in empirical research on life satisfaction. Unlike many other countries that have focused primarily on the pursuit of economic prosperity, this study objectively examines the relationship between economic growth and life satisfaction. This study examines various aspects of the proportion of individuals who report being satisfied with their lives, including time series and single-year comparisons, as well as the level and rate of economic growth. This study conducted independent questionnaire surveys in China and Japan, analyzed the impact of absolute income and relative income on life satisfaction, and then objectively examined and compared life satisfaction in China and Japan. Furthermore, this study proposes that real disposable income exceeding $8,000 is an important signal of a shift in the pursuit of spiritual wealth from an emphasis on material wealth among the Chinese and Japanese. In particular, questionnaire surveys, one for all of Japan and one specifically for Kyoto City, were conducted on the impact of the global pandemic COVID-19 on life satisfaction, and it was found that the original US$8,000 line has risen to US$15,000. This study not only enriches the understanding of the relationship between economic growth, COVID-19 and life satisfaction, but also provides a new perspective for policy making.

Following a period of record high growth, the chronic downturn after 1990 raised fundamental questions about the course of the world's third largest economy. This crisis also presented Japan with the opportunity for transformative change. Changes have followed, some of them less than might be expected, and some of them far more sweeping than is generally realized. This volume presents a wide range of international perspectives on post-bubble Japan, exploring the effects of the long downturn on the views of the Japanese business community, management practices, and national policies. To what degree has Japan's traumatic experience prompted basic reforms in terms of legal changes, corporate governance, business strategy, and the longterm national vision for the economy? This book was originally published as a special issue of Asia Pacific Business Review.

Hingga tahun 2007, Indeks Harga Saham Gabungan (IHSG) mencatatkan kenaikan hingga 578,56%. Memasuki tahun 2008, situasi berbalik. IHSG mengalami koreksi sebesar 61,6%. Penyebabnya adalah krisis Subprime Mortgage di Amerika Serikat. Guna menanggulangi krisis ini, Bank Sentral AS, The Fed, menggelontorkan Quantitative Easing sebesar 4,5 triliun US Dollar. Akibatnya sejak tahun 2009, Bursa Saham Amerika pun mulai pulih. Bank Sentral AS, The Fed, kembali menggelontorkan likuiditas secara masif, Quantitative Easing tanpa batas.

baburu keiki: Unmaking the Japanese Miracle William M. Grimes, 2018-08-06 In the last fifteen years, Japan's economy has gone from model of success to object lesson in failure. William W. Grimes offers a richly detailed, insider's view of the key macroeconomic policies and events in contemporary Japan, as well as a close examination of the causes and effects of these upheavals. It is difficult to believe that the Bubble Economy of the late 1980s and the failed attempts at economic stimulation in the following decade both arose from the same policies. In Unmaking the Japanese Miracle, Grimes shows that this is precisely what happened. Focusing less on what went wrong than on why it went wrong, Grimes finds that mistaken macroeconomic policies—loose money in the late 1980s, excessively tight money until 1992, and only grudging use of expansionary fiscal policy until 1998—largely caused Japan's economic problems. Based on scores of interviews with Japanese policymakers, his is the first political explanation of why these catastrophic policies were carried out by the Ministry of Finance, the Bank of Japan, and the Diet. Various economic shocks were met, Grimes says, with a consistent and often inappropriate pattern of responses. This pattern has fundamentally altered because of changes within the three policymaking institutions since 1998.
baburu keiki: Adolescent Psychology in Today's World Michael J. Nakkula, Andrew J. Schneider-Muñoz, 2018-11-02 This groundbreaking three-volume set spotlights how conditions around the world are affecting the healthy development of adolescents in their respective environments, on all six continents. Continually unstable or perpetually poor economic conditions, globalization, and rapid technological change are just three of the forces affecting a group 1.2 billion strong today, a demographic poised to become our world leaders and catalysts in the not-too-distant future: the world's adolescents. Led by two editors who have been dedicated to studying adolescent development worldwide for decades, this novel collection of works from contributors in more than 40 countries emphasizes how possibilities for healthy mental and physical development are affected by the difficulties youths face in their countries and how these challenges have shaped, and are shaping, contemporary teenage life today. The set comprehensively addresses issues for adolescents across the globe, such as the day-to-day challenges of poverty, inadequate education, violence or war, disease, reproductive matters, globalization and technological challenges, and more, while also providing a strengths-based focus in the volumes, showing how and why some teenagers in each country have surmounted the challenges and forged stronger characters to better their worlds. These stories document more than personal victories, and their experiences matter to far more than the adolescents themselves. In its State of the World's Children 2011 report, UNICEF noted that the world community needs to turn its attention to adolescents in need, explaining that focusing on this large and potentially powerful group makes economic sense as well as being a necessary step in working towards achieving human justice. By addressing the risks, challenges, and strengths of teenagers as a group in countries worldwide, this work serves to break the cycle of poverty, violence, discrimination, and death for adolescents.
baburu keiki: Parkscapes Thomas R. H. Havens, 2010-11-30 Japan today protects one-seventh of its land surface in parks, which are visited by well over a billion people each year. Parkscapes analyzes the origins, development, and distinctive features of these public spaces. Green zones were created by the government beginning in the late nineteenth century for state purposes but eventually evolved into sites of negotiation between bureaucrats and ordinary citizens who use them for demonstrations, riots, and shelters, as well as recreation. Thomas Havens shows how revolutionary officials in the 1870s seized private properties and converted them into public parks for educating and managing citizens in the new emperor-sanctioned state. Rebuilding Tokyo and Yokohama after the earthquake and fires of 1923 spurred the spread of urban parklands both in the capital and other cities. According to Havens, the growth of suburbs, the national mobilization of World War II, and the post-1945 American occupation helped speed the creation of more urban parks, setting the stage for vast increases in public green spaces during Japan’s golden age of affluence from the 1960s through the 1980s. Since the 1990s the Japanese public has embraced a heightened ecological consciousness and become deeply involved in the design and management of both city and natural parks—realms once monopolized by government bureaucrats. As in other prosperous countries, public-private partnerships have increasingly become the norm in operating parks for public benefit, yet the heavy hand of officialdom is still felt throughout Japan’s open lands. Based on extensive research in government documents, travel records, and accounts by frequent park visitors, Parkscapes is the first book in any language to examine the history of both urban and national parks of Japan. As an account of how Japan’s experience of spatial modernity challenges current thinking about protection and use of the nonhuman environment globally, the book will appeal widely to readers of spatial and environmental history as well as those interested in modern Japan and its many inviting green spaces.
