applied chemistry a textbook for engineers and technologists: Applied Chemistry: A Textbook for Engineers and Technologists H. D. Gesser, This book is the result of teaching a one semester course in Applied Chemistry (Chemistry 224) to second year engineering students for over 15 years. The contents of the course evolved as the interests and needs of both the students and Engineering Faculty changed. All the students had at least one semester of Introductory Chemistry and it has been assumed in this text that the students have been exposed to Thermodynamics, Chemical Kinetics, Solution Equilibrium, and Organic Chemistry. These topics must be discussed either before starting the Applied subjects or developed as required if the students are not familiar with these prerequisites. Engineering students often ask 'Why is another Chemistry course required for Non-Chemical Engineers?' There are many answers to this question but foremost is that the Professional Engineer must know when to consult a Chemist and be able to communicate with him. When this is not done the consequences can be a disaster due to faulty design, poor choice of materials or inadequate safety factors. Examples of blunders abound and only a few will be described in an attempt to convince the student to take the subject matter seriously.

applied chemistry a textbook for engineers and technologists: Chemical Technology Andreas Jess, Peter Wasserscheid, 2013-03-11 This textbook provides an integral and integrated treatment of industrial-relevant problems for students of both chemistry and chemical engineering. As such, this work combines the four disciplines of chemical technology - chemistry, thermal and mechanical unit operations, chemical reaction engineering and general chemical technology - and is organized into two main parts. The first covers the fundamentals, as well as the analysis and design of industrial processes, while the second section presents 20 concrete processes, exemplifying the inherent applied nature of chemical technology. These are selected so that they all differ with respect to at least one important aspect, such as the type and design of the reactor, the chemistry involved or the separation process used. As a result, readers will recapitulate, deepen and exercise the chemical and engineering principles and their interplay, as well as being able to apply them to industrial practice. Instructive figures, rules of thumb for swift but reliable estimating of parameters, data of chemical media, and examples utilizing data from industrial processes facilitate and enhance the study process. A small general survey of selected modern trends, such as multifunctional and micro reactors, or new solvents for homogeneous catalysis, such as ionic liquids, point out to the reader that this is not a concluded discipline, but a developing field with many challenges waiting to be solved.

applied chemistry a textbook for engineers and technologists: Introduction to Particle Technology Martin J. Rhodes, Jonathan Seville, 2024-05-16 INTRODUCTION TO PARTICLE TECHNOLOGY A new edition of the indispensable guide to particulates and powders Particle technology concerns the formation, processing and properties of the particles and powders which make up many of the products that surround us. Such products range from the cement and aggregate in the built environment to pharmaceuticals and processed foods. Most of the process industries involve particles, either as essential components such as catalysts or as intermediate or final products, and minerals such as the rare earths that are generally mined and processed in particulate form. Particles can have many beneficial uses but they can also cause harm in the environment and, through inhalation, to the individual. In all cases, the powder properties, particularly particle size, are crucially important. This well-known textbook, now in its 3rd edition, provides an easily-understood introduction to the underlying scientific principles of particle technology, together with examples of how these principles can be used in practical design and operation of industrial processes. Each chapter contains both worked examples and exercises for the student. Based on feedback from students and users of the earlier editions, this revised and expanded text includes introductory chapters on particles as products and on computational methods. The topics have been selected to give coverage of the broad areas of particle technology and include: Characterization (size analysis, surface area) Processing (granulation, fluidization) Particle formation (granulation, crystallisation, tableting, size reduction) Storage and transport (hopper design, pneumatic conveying, standpipes) Separation (filtration, settling, cyclones) Safety (fire and explosion hazards, health hazards) Engineering the properties of particulate systems to achieve desired product performance Discrete element modelling of particulate systems Introduction to Particle Technology, 3rd Edition is essential reading for students of chemical engineering. The text is also recommended reading for students of mechanical engineering, applied chemistry, pharmaceutics, physics, mineral processing, and metallurgy, and is an excellent source for practising engineers and scientists looking to establish a working knowledge of the subject.
applied chemistry a textbook for engineers and technologists: Thermodynamics G. Astarita, 2013-11-11 If a Writer would know how to behave himself with relation to Posterity; let him consider in old Books, what he finds, that he is glad to know; and what Omissions he most laments. Jonathan Swift This book emerges from a long story of teaching. I taught chemical engineering thermodynamics for about ten years at the University of Naples in the 1960s, and I still remember the awkwardness that I felt about any textbook I chose to consider-all of them seemed to be vague at best, and the standard of logical rigor seemed immensely inferior to what I could find in books on such other of the students in my first class subjects as calculus and fluid mechanics. One (who is now Prof. F. Gioia of the University of Naples) once asked me a question which I have used here as Example 4. 2-more than 20 years have gone by, and I am still waiting for a more intelligent question from one of my students. At the time, that question compelled me to answer in a way I didn't like, namely I'll think about it, and I hope I'll have the answer by the next time we meet. I didn't have it that soon, though I did manage to have it before the end of the course.

applied chemistry a textbook for engineers and technologists: The Chemistry and Technology of Petroleum, Fourth Edition James G. Speight, 2006-10-31 Refineries must not only adapt to evolving environmental regulations for cleaner product specifications and processing, but also find ways to meet the increasing demand for petroleum products, particularly for liquid fuels and petrochemical feedstocks. The Chemistry and Technology of Petroleum, Fourth Edition offers a 21st century perspective on the development of petroleum refining technologies. Like its bestselling predecessors, this volume traces the science of petroleum from its subterranean formation to the physicochemical properties and the production of numerous products and petrochemical intermediates. Presenting nearly 50 percent new material, this edition emphasizes novel refining approaches that optimize efficiency and throughput. It includes new chapters on heavy oil and tar sand bitumen recovery, deasphalting and dewaxing processes, and environmental aspects of refining, including refinery wastes, regulations, and analysis. The text also features revised and expanded coverage of instability and incompatibility, refinery distillation, thermal cracking, hydrotreating and desulfurization, hydrocracking, and hydrogen production. A unique, well-documented, and forward-thinking work, this book continues to present the most complete coverage of petroleum science, technology, and refining available. The Chemistry and Technology of Petroleum, Fourth Edition provides an ideal platform for scientists, engineers, and other professionals to achieve cleaner and more efficient petroleum processing methods.
