Tinted with a scholarly lens and a travelogue commentary on places and events during the journey, the work pursues a wider awareness of design purpose and perception based on immediate and past experience. The use of the word “pilgrimage” denotes the nature of the journey beyond mere physical effort and near an extraordinary spiritual and mental enterprise. The emphasis is on walking either physically or fi guratively as a means to the achievement of design knowledge that more fully informs, awakens, and utilizes the body and the senses to produce a superior design articulation. The journey took ten years in preparation with only three months in execution; however, it was not a search for “enlightenment” as much as it was led by a sincere desire to know and to see. To know fi rst hand the places and the people as well as to see the land up close in a manner of receiving a legacy of centuries of presence, culture, and testimony. Truly, to partake of the experience of thousands of other “pilgrims” across 10 centuries and understand their journeys not so much as just a walk of faith but also an enduring legacy that has had critical impact upon design practice. In this manner the design activity is seen more properly understood as a pilgrimage rather than an occupation or a classifi ed profession.. For organizational purposes the book consists of two major sections that complement one another and serve to clarify and amplify both text and testimony. Section One addresses issues of design interest in a holistic rather than a technical manner while Section Two presents a narrative of the experience that serves to place the journey in focus. The symbiotic engagement between the two sections results in a richer narrative of causality that affi rms purpose and consequence of journey. Many conclusions are left to the reader and no strict delimitation is made of discussion boundaries except for the centrality of truth and the guiding power of passion. Without a doubt, this book is about open and truthful personal quests and does not conform to overriding socio-political frameworks of dialogue. Insight is extracted from the author’s experience and scholarship across 40 plus years that results in an animated and challenging dialogue along with a vast and diverse bibliography with works of varied provenance that served to emphasize and support salient and outstanding concepts and ideas with bearing on the quest. The intention was not to produce a treatise or a guidebook but rather to express an experience and its consequences upon a person, a mind, and a spirit with benefi t to design. |

And with Biko’s brutal death in the custody of the South African police, he became a martyr, an enduring symbol of the horrors of apartheid. Through the lens of visual culture, Biko’s Ghost reveals how the man and the ideology he promoted have profoundly influenced liberation politics and race discourse—in South Africa and around the globe—ever since. Tracing the linked histories of Black Consciousness and its most famous proponent, Biko’s Ghost explores the concepts of unity, ancestry, and action that lie at the heart of the ideology and the man. It challenges the dominant historical view of Black Consciousness as ineffectual or racially exclusive, suppressed on the one side by the apartheid regime and on the other by the African National Congress. Engaging theories of trauma and representation, and icon and ideology, Shannen L. Hill considers the martyred Biko as an embattled icon, his image portrayals assuming different shapes and political meanings in different hands. So, too, does she illuminate how Black Consciousness worked behind the scenes throughout the 1980s, a decade of heightened popular unrest and state censorship. Jerome Klinkowitz, himself a veteran practitioner and theorist of fiction, addresses this question in Structuring the Void, an account of what today's novelists and short story writers do when they produce a fictive work. Klinkowitz focuses on the ways in which writers, finding themselves in the same position as abstract painters and death-of-God theologians, have turned their inquiry itself into subject matter, and he shows how this approach has in recent years produced something more than mere metafictive self-questioning. With no subject to structure, the writers Klinkowitz discusses nonetheless persist in the act of structuring. For Kurt Vonnegut, this has meant finding a form for an otherwise unrepresentable world by organizing his autobiography as a narrative device. In the generation following Vonnegut, Max Apple makes a similar move in the ritualization of a national history and popular culture, while Gerald Rosen and Rob Swigart invent a style of literary comedy based on their comic response to a new imaginative state, the state of California. Klinkowitz also considers subjects that, though they cannot be represented, nevertheless exercise constraints on a writer's intention to structure. In recent decades, two of these pressing themes have been gender (as seen here in the works of Grace Paley) and war (the Vietnam conflict itself as well as the struggles of two generations to come to terms with it). Structuring the void left when content collapses, these writers have, as Klinkowitz demonstrates, developed an entirely new style of fiction, one that necessarily privileges space over time and self-invention over representation. |
