arowana care book: Arowana Kyle Faber, 2017-02-09 The Arowana is the world's most costly aquarium fish. It is a tropical freshwater fish from the brackish swamps of Asia, the river basins of South America, and the pools and billabongs of Austrailia. There are numerous types of Arowanas, most of which can easily grow up to three feet long. This fish is a savage predator that's been around since the age of the dinosaurs and has remained unchanged, which is why some people call these fish living fossils. The Arowana is prized for its unique metallic scales; the bristles that bulge from its jaw; and its undulating movements as it swims, which are reminiscent of the paper serpents you might find in a Chinese New Year's parade. In fact, the similarities between the Arowana and the dragon of Chinese lore have given rise to the belief that the fish brings good fortune and success. For all of these reasons, the Arowana has become one of the most coveted aquarium fish in the world. The situation of the Arowana is very unique: nearly extinct in the wild, Arowanas have actually seen an increase in reproduction in recent years as they're bred by the thousands on farms for the aquarium trade. The Arowana's declining population and subsequent resurgence is a direct result of the conservation movement of the last several decades -- but not in the way you might think. In the 1970s, when the international community started to organize around the idea of ensuring imperiled species were protected, the idea was to boycott the exchange of all potentially endangered species, including the Asian Arowana. In those days the Arowana was considered a food fish, and not an especially prized one. Although the interest in Arowanas was relatively minimal at that point, the fish is an apex predator in its ecosystem and a moderate-reproducing species, so it wound up on the list of protected species and was banned from international exchange. This effort at conservation backfired, and spectacularly: once a relatively unpopular food fish, when the Arowana became a restricted species, the interest in it as an aquarium fish spiked. Suddenly, the fish was in high demand as a status symbol, and those in the aquarium trade were eager to breed and raise as many Arowanas as they could for sale. This brings us to where we are today, with certain prized specimens of Arowana being sold for an astonishing $400,000 each What makes this fish so special? We'll discuss the myths, legends, types, costs, and care requirements for the incredibly unique and highly sought-after Arowana. |

He’s looking for a bigger renovation—one that will bring love and meaning to a life that’s in desperate need of repair. Loving Benny: Benedetta Russo’s had a run of bad luck in love, in her career, and now in her family life. When an incident with an endangered fish brings Benny into YouTube star Ike Fitzgerald’s life, he quickly begins to think of her as a friend—and then more than a friend. He’s sure that together, they’ll be able to tackle the challenges facing both of them—if only he can convince her that love doesn’t necessarily equal pain, disappointment, and disaster. |
arowana care book: Arowana Fish Most Expensive Aquarium Fish in the World. Robert Anthony Anthony, 2020-10-28 Searching for the best quality level for your aquarium? Meet the Asian arowana, the informal Lamborghini of the ocean-and the most costly aquarium fish on the planet. These dragonfish are especially respected in China, where the freshwater pets are superficial points of interest-and cost a chunk of change. In 2009, one was supposed to have sold for $300,000. That fish was said to have directed as much as possible as a valued pale albino version, and different arowanas apparently bring huge number of dollars. (The fish's normal life expectancy is 10 to 15 years; on the off chance that you need an arowana that will last somewhat more, look at this arowana mold-made of jade, opal, and marble-selling on eBay for $5.8 million.) That the pined for species is jeopardized just adds to its interest (a few people have been captured for pirating them). In any case, that is not the most striking reality about the arowana. These fish cause such a craze that occasionally they have their own motorcades for transport and their own protectors, as per Business Insider. There's even a business opportunity for corrective face-lifts for fish experiencing saggy eyelids or requiring a jawline fold. An eye lift runs an oddly reasonable $90, and a jaw revision costs about $60, as indicated by The New York Times. |

arowana care book: Cosmic Coherence William Matthews, 2021-11-01 Humans are unique in their ability to create systematic accounts of the world – theories based on guiding cosmological principles. This book is about the role of cognition in creating cosmologies, and explores this through the ethnography and history of Yijing divination in China. Diviners explain the cosmos in terms of a single substance, qi, unfolding across scales of increasing complexity to create natural phenomena and human experience. Combined with an understanding of human cognition, it shows how this conception of scale offers a new way for anthropologists and other social scientists to think about cosmology, comparison and cultural difference. |

arowana care book: A mother's legacy:three generations of life, love and loss by Ellen Huang, 2019-01-01 內容介紹 In Asia, most women who marry and start their own families tend to gradually detach from the families they grew up, and only come back to them during special occasions. During such occasions, the married women bring their husbands and children to their childhood homes as guests. This is a reality of life, and it happens regardless of how close the women were to their family members prior to getting married. The close family bond inevitably becomes a somewhat distant relationship, especially when the parents pass away, or when there is discord amongst the siblings. Hence the saying, “When a father passes, the road to go home is far; when a mother passes, the road to go home is severed.” Most children have very fond memories of visiting their maternal grandparents, because they were always treated like special guests. I personally did not have this kind of experience, but I do not feel sad nor regretful, since my grandmother – my mother’s mother – lived with us at home when I was growing up. I often wondered if my grandmother believed in the traditional and stereotypical Chinese concept of relying on sons and not on daughters, which could have caused her to feel as if she was a burden to our family. My grandmother was strongly against being called “Wai Ma” or “Wai Po,” meaning, “grandmother on the mother’s side.” The word “wai” means “outside,” while the word “Po” carries a certain level of discrimination against women, which explains why my grandmother never liked the term, and why I have always referred to her as simply, grandmother or “A Ma,” with no distinction of father’s or mother’s side – and is also how I will be referring to her in this book. Throughout my life, my grandmother was my biggest source of wisdom and enlightenment, and my mother and I have always loved and supported each other. Both of their lives have seamlessly interwoven with my life and destiny, like the missing pieces that complete an unfinished puzzle. Those who are traditional say that a woman’s life starts with the happiness that comes with the birth of a child, and as she buries the pain of childbirth, her life has come full circle. But in this book, my grandmother, my mother and I, despite having lived in different times, have maintained our shared bonds and sense of self, forging our own paths and finding our own pieces of heaven in the puzzle of life. Some people lose their mothers before they even get to know them, while some people are sadly abandoned by their own mothers, developing deep emotional scars that greatly affect their character and personal development. My grandmother lived for 80 years and my mother passed away at the age of 89. Being over 60 myself, I am fortunate enough to have witnessed and experienced the bond between mothers and daughters across three generations. However, this does not mean that my life has been smooth sailing on calm waters. Because of this, I have decided to write this book, so I can put pen to paper and record my memories while they are still in my mind and have not been blurred by time. It is my hope that by writing down my memories, I can cherish and connect them together like pearls in a necklace, to keep them alive and hold them close to my heart. This book is meant to honor, remember and thank the two most important women in my life. For my siblings and my own three children, who have established their own families and careers, this book can be a way for them to have a deeper understanding of the strong bond between mothers and their children, and the familial bond that connects us all. |
