Sample Book Insights: #1 The birth of Prince Harry’s first child in May 2019 offered the two brothers a chance to reconcile and embrace. They had tiffs and troubles before the wedding in 2018, but the birth of a spring baby brings everyone together. #2 The warming pan was the electric blanket or rubber hot water bottle of its day, and it was used in 1688 to smuggle a healthy substitute baby into the birthing bed of Mary of Modena, wife of the hated Catholic King James II. #3 The birth of Prince Charles in 1948 was the first post-1688 heir to the British throne to be born without the scrutiny of the people. In 1982 and 1984, Prince William and Harry were born, and they brought their sons out onto the steps of the Lindo Wing for public inspection. #4 The birth of baby Sussex was delayed for two weeks, and when he finally arrived, he was healthy but weighed 7 pounds 3 ounces. The couple returned to Windsor with their son undetected.

are the middletons gypsies: Fitzgerald William Bunge, 2022-09-06 This on-the-ground study of one square mile in Detroit was written in collaboration with neighborhood residents, many of whom were involved with the famous Detroit Geographical Expedition and Institute. Fitzgerald, at its core, is dedicated to understanding global phenomena through the intensive study of a small, local place. Beginning with an 1816 encounter between the Ojibwa population and the neighborhood’s first surveyor, William Bunge examines the racialized imposition of local landscapes over the course of European American settlement. Historical events are firmly situated in space—a task Bunge accomplishes through liberal use of maps and frequent references to recognizable twentieth-century landmarks. More than a work of historical geography, Fitzgerald is a political intervention. By 1967 the neighborhood was mostly African American; Black Power was ascendant; and Detroit would experience a major riot. Immersed in the daily life of the area, Bunge encouraged residents to tell their stories and to think about local politics in spatial terms. His desire to undertake a different sort of geography led him to create a work that was nothing like a typical work of social science. The jumble of text, maps, and images makes it a particularly urgent book—a major theoretical contribution to urban geography that is also a startling evocation of street-level Detroit during a turbulent era.   are the middletons gypsies: Austen's Unbecoming Conjunctions Jill Heydt-Stevenson, 2008-09-14 This lucid and insightful work investigates the role that dissident comedy plays in Austen’s writings. Using sexuality as a lens upon circa-1800 literary culture, this book emphasizes the physical life of Austen’s heroines, and contributes to recent analyses of popular culture, thing theory, and material history. Through her focus on objects, Heydt-Stevenson argues that Austen’s novels explore the physical, erotic, humorous, and sometimes tragically funny connotations of popular literature and commonplace books, clothing, jewelry, crafts, travel, and tourism. Through an examination of Austen’s humor and linguistic patterns, this book interrogates the stereotypes of women authors as culturally inhibited, and shows how Austen addressed as sophisticated and worldly an audience as Byron's. Through her careful reading of all the Austen texts in light of the language of eroticism, both traditional and contemporary, Heydt-Stevenson reevaluates Austen's audience, the novels, and her role as a writer.

are the middletons gypsies: The Tinker's Wedding John Millington Synge, 2022-12-13 Sarah Casey, determined to be made an honest woman, convinces reluctant local Tinker, Michael Byrne, to marry her. After harassing the local priest into officiating their wedding for half the price, Sarah’s dreams might be about to come true. That is until Michael’s scornful Mother intervenes and steals the priest’s money. Refusing to wed the couple until his money is returned, the hopeless priest unleashes the fury of the Tinkers. J.M. Synge’s ‘The Tinker’s Wedding’ (1909) is a classic two-act play of comedic genius that pokes fun at Irish country folk. An incredibly controversial play when it was first staged due to its treatment of the priest, ‘The Tinker’s Wedding’ is an excellent ode to failed and farcical matrimony and is perfect for anyone who enjoys weddings-gone-wrong comedies like ‘Bridesmaids’ or the British classic ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’. Edmund John Millington Synge (1871 – 1909) was an Irish poet, playwright, and defining figure of the Irish Literary Revival. Born in County Dublin to upper-middle-class Protestants, Synge suffered from Hodgkin’s disease which led to his home-schooling. Soon after graduating from Trinity College Dublin, Synge became a renowned poet and playwright, but his success was short-lived as he passed away from cancer at 37. He is best remembered for his play ‘The Playboy of the Western World’, an incredibly controversial work at the time of its publication and performance. Regarded by Yeats as ‘the greatest dramatic genius of Ireland’, Synge has held a lasting legacy, being a key influence for acclaimed Irish playwright Samuel Beckett and the subject of Joseph O’Connor’s novel ‘Ghost Light’ (2010).

are the middletons gypsies: The Art of Commedia M. A. Katritzky, 2006 Italian comedians attracted audiences to performances at every level, from the magnificent Italian, German and French court festival appearances of Orlando di Lasso or Isabella Andreini, to the humble street trestle lazzi of anonymous quacks. The characters they inspired continue to exercise a profound cultural influence, and an understanding of the commedia dell'arte and its visual record is fundamental for scholars of post-1550 European drama, literature, art and music. The 340 plates presented here are considered in the light of the rise and spread of commedia stock types, and especially Harlequin, Zanni and the actresses. Intensively researched in public and private collections in Oxford, Munich, Florence, Venice, Paris and elsewhere, they complement the familiar images of Jacques Callot and the Stockholm Recueil Fossard within a framework of hundreds of significant pictures still virtually unknown in this context. These range from anonymous popular prints to pictures by artists such as Ambrogio Brambilla, Sebastian Vrancx, Jan Bruegel, Louis de Caulery, Marten de Vos, and members of the Valckenborch and Francken clans. This volume, essential for commedia dell'arte specialists, represents an invaluable reference resource for scholars, students, theatre practitioners and artists concerned with commedia-related aspects of visual, dramatic and festival culture, in and beyond Italy.
are the middletons gypsies: The Mystery of Lewis Carroll Jenny Woolf, 2010-03-04 A new biography of Lewis Carroll, just in time for the release of Tim Burton's all-star Alice in Wonderland Lewis Carroll was brilliant, secretive and self contradictory. He reveled in double meanings and puzzles, in his fiction and his life. Jenny Woolf's The Mystery of Lewis Carroll shines a new light on the creator of Alice In Wonderland and brings to life this fascinating, but sometimes exasperating human being whom some have tried to hide. Using rarely-seen and recently discovered sources, such as Carroll's accounts ledger and unpublished correspondence with the real Alice's family, Woolf sets Lewis Carroll firmly in the context of the English Victorian age and answers many intriguing questions about the man who wrote the Alice books, such as: • Was it Alice or her older sister that caused him to break with the Liddell family? • How true is the gossip about pedophilia and certain adult women that followed him? • How true is the romantic secret which many think ruined Carroll's personal life? • Who caused Carroll major financial trouble and why did Carroll successfully conceal that person's identity and actions? Woolf answers these and other questions to bring readers yet another look at one of the most elusive English writers the world has known.
