animal farm online book: Animal Farm George Orwell, 2021-02-16 Animal Farm is an allegorical novella by George Orwell, first published in England on 17 August 1945. The book tells the story of a group of farm animals who rebel against their human farmer, hoping to create a society where the animals can be equal, free, and happy. Ultimately, however, the rebellion is betrayed, and the farm ends up in a state as bad as it was before, under the dictatorship of a pig named Napoleon.According to Orwell, the fable reflects events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917 and then on into the Stalinist era of the Soviet Union. Orwell, a democratic socialist, was a critic of Joseph Stalin and hostile to Moscow-directed Stalinism, an attitude that was critically shaped by his experiences during the Spanish Civil War. The Soviet Union had become a totalitarian autocracy built upon a cult of personality while engaging in the practice of mass incarcerations and secret summary trials and executions. In a letter to Yvonne Davet, Orwell described Animal Farm as a satirical tale against Stalin (un conte satirique contre Staline), and in his essay Why I Write (1946), wrote that Animal Farm was the first book in which he tried, with full consciousness of what he was doing, to fuse political purpose and artistic purpose into one whole. The original title was Animal Farm: A Fairy Story, but U.S. publishers dropped the subtitle when it was published in 1946, and only one of the translations during Orwell's lifetime kept it. Other titular variations include subtitles like A Satire and A Contemporary Satire. Orwell suggested the title Union des républiques socialistes animales for the French translation, which abbreviates to URSA, the Latin word for bear, a symbol of Russia. It also played on the French name of the Soviet Union, Union des républiques socialistes soviétiques.Orwell wrote the book between November 1943 and February 1944, when the United Kingdom was in its wartime alliance with the Soviet Union against Nazi Germany, and the British intelligentsia held Stalin in high esteem, a phenomenon Orwell hated. The manuscript was initially rejected by a number of British and American publishers, including one of Orwell's own, Victor Gollancz, which delayed its publication. It became a great commercial success when it did appear partly because international relations were transformed as the wartime alliance gave way to the Cold War.Time magazine chose the book as one of the 100 best English-language novels (1923 to 2005); it also featured at number 31 on the Modern Library List of Best 20th-Century Novels, and number 46 on the BBC's The Big Read poll. It won a Retrospective Hugo Award in 1996 and is included in the Great Books of the Western World selection. |

animal farm online book: Snowball's Chance John Reed, 2012-07-31 This unauthorized companion to George Orwell’s Animal Farm is a controversial parable about September 11th by one of fiction’s most inventive and provocative writers Written in 14 days shortly after the September 11th attacks, Snowball’s Chance is an outrageous and unauthorized companion to George Orwell’s Animal Farm, in which exiled pig Snowball returns to the farm, takes charge, and implements a new world order of untrammeled capitalism. Orwell’s “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others” has morphed into the new rallying cry: “All animals are born equal—what they become is their own affair.” A brilliant political satire and literary parody, John Reed’s Snowball’s Chance caused an uproar on publication in 2002, denounced by Christopher Hitchens, and barely dodging a lawsuit from the Orwell estate. Now, a decade later, with America in wars on many fronts, readers can judge anew the visionary truth of Reed’s satirical masterpiece. |

animal farm online book: Animal Farm George Orwell, 2018-04-19 The most famous by far of all twentieth-century political allegories, Animal Farm is the account of a group of barnyard animals who revolt against their vicious human master, only to submit to a tyranny erected by their own kind, can fairly be said to have become a universal drama. Orwell is one of the very few modern satirists comparable to Jonathan Swift in power, artistry, and moral authority; in animal farm his spare prose and the logic of his dark comedy brilliantly highlight his stark message. Taking as his starting point the betrayed promise of the Russian Revolution, Orwell lays out a vision that, in its bitter wisdom, gives us the clearest understanding we possess of the possible consequences of our social and political acts. animal farm online book: Charlotte's Web E. B. White, 1952 Sixty years ago, on October 15, 1952, E.B. White's Charlotte's Web was published. It's gone on to become one of the most beloved children's books of all time. To celebrate this milestone, the renowned Newbery Medalist Kate DiCamillo has written a heartfelt and poignant tribute to the book that is itself a beautiful translation of White's own view of the world—of the joy he took in the change of seasons, in farm life, in the miracles of life and death, and, in short, the glory of everything. We are proud to include Kate DiCamillo's foreword in the 60th anniversary editions of this cherished classic. Charlotte's Web is the story of a little girl named Fern who loved a little pig named Wilbur—and of Wilbur's dear friend Charlotte A. Cavatica, a beautiful large grey spider who lived with Wilbur in the barn. With the help of Templeton, the rat who never did anything for anybody unless there was something in it for him, and by a wonderfully clever plan of her own, Charlotte saved the life of Wilbur, who by this time had grown up to quite a pig. How all this comes about is Mr. White's story. It is a story of the magic of childhood on the farm. The thousands of children who loved Stuart Little, the heroic little city mouse, will be entranced with Charlotte the spider, Wilbur the pig, and Fern, the little girl who understood their language. The forty-seven black-and-white drawings by Garth Williams have all the wonderful detail and warmhearted appeal that children love in his work. Incomparably matched to E.B. White's marvelous story, they speak to each new generation, softly and irresistibly. |

animal farm online book: Animal Farm - Sugarcandy Mountain Alicia Shaw, 2017-03-30 Animal Farm - Sugarcandy Mountain A long time ago, there was a very special farm in England called Manor Farm. This farm was home to a lot of amazing animals that helped care for the farm, but the farm animals were not very happy. The farmer, Mr. Jones, did not treat the animals very nicely. The animals were overworked and underfed. Everything the animals made was being used by the humans and nothing was left for the animals. Welcome to the children's adaptation of Animal Farm Series! This series is designed to preserve the great classical stories that the older generations grew up with by bringing it to children of this generation. With the advent of technology, the young generation reads mainly for education and not as a hobby or just for fun. Classical literature is slowly fading with each generation and can only be kept alive if we bring these stories to children from an early age. As as Wolfgang Von Goethe stated: The decline of literature indicates the decline of a nation. |

animal farm online book: The Red Flag David Priestland, 2010 David Priestland's The Red Flag: Communism and the Making of the Modern World is an original, compelling history of Communism, exploring its global impact from the aftermath of the French Revolution to present-day China. Communism was one of the most powerful movements of the modern world. At the height of its influence over a third of the global population lived under its rule. And yet very few predicted either its bewildering rise or sudden decline. How did a contradictory measure of revolutionary romanticism and ruthless pragmatism succeed for so long? Why did it manage to inspire so many people - from the militants of 1920s Russia to the urban terrorists in 1970s Europe? The Red Flag charts the progress of Communism from Marx to Mao, from Stalin to Che Guevara, from the Bolsheviks and the guerrilla fighters of China to the Marxist students of Ethiopia and the Baader-Meinhof Group, showing how it helped shape the world we live in. 'Entertaining ... astute ... a fine new history of Communism' John Gray, New Statesman 'Mesmerizing ... deftly combining academic rigour, personal histories and an engaging narrative' Tristram Hunt 'Priestland writes with elegance and style ... he introduces art, poetry, film and literature to illustrate his themes, which makes this a riveting cultural as well as political history' Victor Sebestyen, Sunday Times 'The best and the most accessible one-volume history of Communism now available ... A far-reaching, vividly written account' Foreign Affairs David Priestland has studied Communism in all its forms for many years, in both Oxford and Moscow State Universities. He is University Lecturer in Modern History at Oxford and a Fellow of St. Edmund Hall, and the author of Stalinism and the Politics of Mobilization. The Red Flag was shortlisted for the Longman/History Today prize. |

animal farm online book: Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four George Orwell, 2021-02-22 A delightfully humorous and caustic satire on the rule of the many by the few. Animal Farm, The Guardian. I do not think I have ever read a novel more frightening and depressing; and yet, such are the originality, the suspense, the speed of writing and withering indignation that it is impossible to put the book down. - V. S. Pritchett of Nineteen Eighty-Four. One cannot help but be struck by the degree to which he (George Orwell) became, in Henry James's words, one of those upon whom nothing was lost. By declining to lie, even as far as possible to himself, and by his determination to seek elusive but verifiable truth, he showed how much can be accomplished by an individual who unites the qualities of intellectual honesty and moral courage. -- Christopher Hitchens We have cut the links between child and parent, and between man and man, and between man and woman. No one dares trust a wife or a child or a friend any longer. ... There will be no art, no literature, no science. ... There will be no distinction between beauty and ugliness. There will be no curiosity, no enjoyment of the process of life. All competing pleasures will be destroyed. But always, always there will be the intoxication of power, constantly increasing and constantly growing subtler. Always, at every moment, there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of trampling on an enemy who is helpless. -- George Orwell, Nineteen Eighty-Four. This little volume contains two of the most prophetic and chilling novels of the twentieth century--Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four. Orwell clear-sightedly looks at humanity and human nature and shows us what could go terribly wrong. Orwell wrote Animal Farm - A Fairy Story in three months from November 1943 to February 1944. It was only published in August 1945 because it was seen for what it was: a critique of Stalin's Soviet Union, which, much to Orwell's disgust, was a strategic ally of the United Kingdom. In his compelling dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, George Orwell created the world of Big Brother, doublethink, thoughtcrime, Newspeak, Room 101, 2 + 2 = 5, and the memory hole: indeed, a complete Orwellian society. In the twenty-first century, in a world of fake news and ubiquitous state and corporate monitoring of citizens, in which vast regions of the world are governed by totalitarian regimes, Nineteen Eighty-Four is even more relevant than when it was written. It is essential reading. George Orwell (born Eric Blair, 1903, Motihari, Bengal, died Jan 1950, London)was a leading British writer of the twentieth century. He studied at Wellington College and Eton (1917-1921) where he was a King's Scholar. After Eton, he followed family tradition and joined the Indian Imperial Police in Burma, until 1927 when, disgusted by imperialism, he resigned to pursue his boyhood dream of being a writer. He published an autobiographical book Down and Out in London and Paris, with Victor Gollancz Ltd. under his pen name of George Orwell. This established his literary career. Orwell was a prolific journalist, essayist, novelist and nonfiction writer. He is remembered for his prescient writing and his unwavering commitment to truth and clarity of expression. His last two novels--Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four--have placed him at the pinnacle of British literature. |

animal farm online book: Essential Student Texts: Animal Farm eBook George Orwell, 2021-04-15 Orwell's classic tale tells of the animals of Manor Farm and their uprising against their brutal human master, Mr Jones. They dream of a life of freedom and equality, where all animals work for the good of each other in the newly formed, utopian, Animal Farm. However, their dream is short-lived as some of the inhabitants become swiftly corrupted by their newfound power. Most of the animals don't realise that one form of tyranny has replaced another until it is too late. This Essential Student Texts eBook edition of Orwell's modern classic comes with accessible and informative notes. |

animal farm online book: Blurb Your Enthusiasm Louise Willder, 2022-09-01 A TIMES BOOK OF THE YEAR 'A small masterpiece. There is something funny, notable or awe-inspiring on every single page’ Jenny Colgan, Spectator A joyful celebration of books – the perfect gift for bibliophiles, word lovers and anyone who’s ever wondered, should you judge a book by its cover? We love the words in books – but what about the words on them? How do they work their magic? Penguin Books blurb wizard Louise Willder joyfully divulges what those 100-or-so words can tell us about literary history, the craft of writing, authors from George Orwell to Zadie Smith, genres from children’s fiction to bonkbusters, cover design, the dark arts of persuasion and even why we read. She also answers burning questions such as: • Should all adjectives be murdered? • Is blurbing sometimes maybe lying? • Which classic novel was nearly called The High Bouncing Lover? • What are the worst blurbs of all time? ‘The bookiest book about books you’ll ever read – I loved it’ Lucy Mangan ‘Truly delightful...I couldn’t have had more fun’ Benjamin Dreyer ‘Very funny, erudite and profound. A delight!’ Nina Stibbe |
