alexander reiman orthopedics: Functional Assessment for Adults with Disabilities National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, Health and Medicine Division, Board on Health Care Services, Committee on Functional Assessment for Adults with Disabilities, 2019-08-31 The U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) provides disability benefits through the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs. To receive SSDI or SSI disability benefits, an individual must meet the statutory definition of disability, which is the inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity [SGA] by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment which can be expected to result in death or which has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 12 months. SSA uses a five-step sequential process to determine whether an adult applicant meets this definition. Functional Assessment for Adults with Disabilities examines ways to collect information about an individual's physical and mental (cognitive and noncognitive) functional abilities relevant to work requirements. This report discusses the types of information that support findings of limitations in functional abilities relevant to work requirements, and provides findings and conclusions regarding the collection of information and assessment of functional abilities relevant to work requirements.

alexander reiman orthopedics: The Ecology of Human Development Urie BRONFENBRENNER, 2009-06-30 Here is a book that challenges the very basis of the way psychologists have studied child development. According to Urie Bronfenbrenner, one of the world's foremost developmental psychologists, laboratory studies of the child's behavior sacrifice too much in order to gain experimental control and analytic rigor. Laboratory observations, he argues, too often lead to the science of the strange behavior of children in strange situations with strange adults for the briefest possible periods of time. To understand the way children actually develop, Bronfenbrenner believes that it will be necessary to observe their behavior in natural settings, while they are interacting with familiar adults over prolonged periods of time. This book offers an important blueprint for constructing such a new and ecologically valid psychology of development. The blueprint includes a complete conceptual framework for analysing the layers of the environment that have a formative influence on the child. This framework is applied to a variety of settings in which children commonly develop, ranging from the pediatric ward to daycare, school, and various family configurations. The result is a rich set of hypotheses about the developmental consequences of various types of environments. Where current research bears on these hypotheses, Bronfenbrenner marshals the data to show how an ecological theory can be tested. Where no relevant data exist, he suggests new and interesting ecological experiments that might be undertaken to resolve current unknowns. Bronfenbrenner's groundbreaking program for reform in developmental psychology is certain to be controversial. His argument flies in the face of standard psychological procedures and challenges psychology to become more relevant to the ways in which children actually develop. It is a challenge psychology can ill-afford to ignore.

alexander reiman orthopedics: Rehabilitation of Sports Injuries G. Puddu, A. Giombini, A. Selvanetti, 2013-03-09 Over the last few years, in the field of sports science and medicine, empirical theories about the treatment and rehabilitation of injured athletes have been gradually sup ported by a rapid growth of research data and scientific literature. This has permit ted a better knowledge of the healing process from injury and/or surgery, and a more appropriate understanding of the biomechanical behavior of several biological structures to load and exercise. We agree with the opinion that development and advancement through a rehabil itation program should be based on the type and severity of the lesion, healing time of the injured structures, individual pain tolerance level, possible adopted surgical procedure, and sport-specific biomechanical demands. Currently, the most re cent theories on rehabilitation of the injured athlete em phasize the concepts of a multidisciplinary approach, a functional recovery instead of symptomatic improvement, and an early mobilization with the implementation of an individualized program treating the entire body kinetic chains. Among different methods of rehabilitation, the physician should choose those re vealing their clinical appropriateness, founded on a validated scientific data and/or proven clinical efficacy. Our goal has been to provide a comprehensive coverage of principles and practi cal applications of the rehabilitation methods of the most common sports injuries, and we have tried to combine the variety of expertise and backgrounds of a multidis ciplinary group of contributing authors.

alexander reiman orthopedics: Injuries in Athletics: Causes and Consequences Semyon M. Slobounov, 2008-06-17 Over the past decade, the scientific information on psychology of injury has increased considerably. Despite dramatic advances in physical education of coaches, field of medicine, athletic training, and physical therapy, the sport-related traumatic injuries is our major concern. Athletic injuries, both single and multiple, have a tendency to grow dramatically. Accordingly, prevention of sport-related injuries is a major challenge facing the sport medicine world today. The purpose of this book is to accumulate the latest development in psychological analyses, evaluation, and management of sport-related injuries, including traumatic brain injuries. No two traumatic injuries are alike in mechanism, symptoms, or symptoms resolution. There is still no agreement upon psychological diagnosis and there is no known comprehensive treatment for sport-related injuries for regaining pre-injury status. Physical symptoms resolution is not an indication of psychological trauma resolution.

alexander reiman orthopedics: Congenital Dysplasia and Dislocation of the Hip in Children and Adults Dietrich Tönnis, 2012-12-06 For more than 100 years, congenital dislocation of the hip has been an area of concern in orthopedics. This publications on the subject are al most too numerous to count. Yet our knowledge of the basic principles of congenital hip dislocation and its management is constantly being expanded by new research. In Germanspeaking countries, Kaiser pub lished the last comprehensive textbook on congenital hip dislocation in 1958, and Schlegel followed with a comprehensive handbook in 1961. In the Angloamerican world, Coleman's monograph was pub lished in 1978, Somerville's in 1982, and Wilkinson's in 1985. In 1982 Tachdjian compiled a volume on congenital hip dislocation that con tained contributions from 44 authorities. The purpose of the present book is to provide an overview of our pre sent state of knowledge of congenital hip dislocation, covering basic principles, diagnosis, methods of closed and open treatment, and indi cations. In the process, an attempt is made to trace progress in the field from its beginnings to the present time. Many authors describe the diagnosis and treatment of congenital hip dysplasia and dislocation in terms of specific age groups. We believe it is more prudent to take an individualized approach based on arthro graphic findings and the degree of severity of pathologic changes. Less emphasis is placed here on the management of patients by age group.

alexander reiman orthopedics: Dance Anatomy and Kinesiology Karen Clippinger, 2016-01-04 Karen Clippinger’s first edition of Dance Anatomy and Kinesiology was hailed as the definitive text on the topic. This new edition builds on that success by retaining its scientific perspective while making the material more accessible to students and teachers. What’s New? • A suite of online instructor and student ancillaries to support the text • An improved organization that will help teachers better cover the content in their courses • A reduction of the scientific depth to produce a more reader-friendly book that focuses on the musculoskeletal anatomy and kinesiology that dancers need to know • Graphics, photos, and anatomical illustrations that demonstrate muscle movements and technique considerations and set the book apart from others in its field Primary Focus While much is new in this second edition, Clippinger retains her emphasis on presenting the anatomical and kinesiological material that is essential for dancers to understand. The text includes descriptions of joint structure, key muscles, common alignment problems, select joint mechanics, and movement analysis and includes sample strength and flexibility exercises for each region of the body. Accessible to a Wider Audience Clippinger has made this second edition more engaging to a wider audience and narrowed the scope of the material so it can be more readily covered in a single undergraduate course. And while many of the text examples are dance-specific, its applied nature and its many illustrations make it a great reference for Pilates, yoga, and fitness instructors as well as dance educators and dedicated dancers. New Ancillaries • An instructor guide featuring a sample syllabus and course outline, chapter outlines, lab assignments, answers to review questions, and sample tests • A presentation package providing slides with text and graphics that reinforce key points • A student web resource including assignments, outlines, study sheets, and 20 video clips that demonstrate technique and correction guidelines This new edition will give teachers a clearer picture of the anatomical and kinesiological factors that aid in generating technique cues and identifying technique problems. It will provide dancers with a better understanding of overcoming technique challenges and preventing injuries. Its solid grounding in the sciences, along with the art and accessible text, will help teachers become more effective and empower dancers to realize their potential and artistic vision. Quotes The first edition of Dance Anatomy and Kinesiology was hailed by reviewers as “most likely to become the definitive text in dance anatomy, kinesiology, and conditioning classes” (Journal of Dance Medicine and Science); “a must for any dance teacher who is serious about helping their students” (Australia Dance Teacher Magazine); and “the most substantive dance science resource to date” (Journal of Dance Education).

alexander reiman orthopedics: Geriatric Oncology Martine Extermann, 2020-01-30 This book is intended as a comprehensive resource for clinicians and researchers seeking in-depth information on geriatric oncology. The coverage encompasses epidemiology, the biology and (patho)physiology of aging and cancer, geriatric assessment and management, hematologic malignancies, solid tumors, issues in patient care, and research methods. Since cancer is a disease of aging and people are living longer, most cancer patients are now aged 70 and older. Yet the more we age, the more diverse we become in terms of our health, biologic fitness, and cancer behavior. Typically, however, general oncology clinical trials address only a selected healthier and younger population of patients. Geriatric oncology is the area of oncology that addresses these issues but while a wealth of knowledge has been accumulated, information is often difficult to retrieve or insufficiently detailed. The SpringerReference program, in which this book is published, offers an ideal format for overcoming these limitations since it combines thorough coverage with access to living editions constantly updated chapter by chapter via a dynamic peer-review process, ensuring that information remains current and pertinent.
alexander reiman orthopedics: Clinical Nuclear Medicine Hans-Jürgen Biersack, Leonard M. Freeman, 2008-01-03 The modern era of radionuclide imaging and therapy is well into its seventh decade. During this era, many national and international textbooks have been published in an attempt to educate not only the practitioners of our medical discipline, but also referring physicians and medical students. Some of the more recent large multic- tural texts, such as those by Ell and Ghambir, Sandler et al. and Henkin et al. , provide us with very comprehensive reference sources while some of the smaller texts totally writtenbytwo or threeindividuals,e. g. Mettler &Guiberteauand Ziessman,O’M- ley & Thrall, have achieved popularity with radiology residents and other physicians in training. The concept of Clinical Nuclear Medicine arose 3 years ago from a conversation between the editors, who have been close friends for many years. We have always felt that our relationship epitomizes one of the major strengths of nuclear medicine, which is the very close ties and spirit of educational cooperation that exist between international colleagues. We all share the same aim of doing whatever we can to op- mize patient care whether it be by introducing new pharmaceuticals and inst- ments or by developing new techniques or approaches to performing our broad spectrum of clinical procedures. Nuclear medicine physicians have almost uniformly been willing to share their expertise at national and international meetings. The - ternational nuclear medicine community, unlike many other larger specialty areas, has remained relatively small. It was within this spirit that Clinical Nuclear Medicine was born.
