akka mahadevi vachana kannada: Siva's Warriors , 2014-07-14 Here is the first translation into English of the Basava Purana, a fascinating collection of tales that sums up and characterizes one of the most important and most radical religious groups of South India. The ideas of the Virasaivas, or militant Saivas, are represented in those tales by an intriguing mix of outrageous excess and traditional conservatism. Written in Telugu in the thirteenth century, the Basava Purana is an anthology of legends of Virasaivas saints and a hagiography of Basavesvara, the twelfth-century Virasaiva leader. This translation makes accessible a completely new perspective on this significant religious group. Although Telugu is one of the major cultural traditions of India, with a classical literature reaching back to the eleventh century, until now there has been no translation or exposition of any of the Telugu Virasaiva works in English. The introduction orients the reader to the text and helps in an understanding of the poet's point of view. The author of the Basava Purana, Palkuriki Somanatha, is revered as a saint by Virasaivas in Andhra and Karnataka. His books are regarded as sacred texts, and he is also considered to be a major poet in Telugu and Kannada. Originally published in 1990. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905. |

akka mahadevi vachana kannada: Speaking of Siva , 2014-02-01 Speaking of Siva is a selection of vacanas or free-verse sayings from the Virasaiva religious movement, dedicated to Siva as the supreme god. Written by four major saints, the greatest exponents of this poetic form, between the tenth and twelfth centuries, they are passionate lyrical expressions of the search for an unpredictable and spontaneous spiritual vision of 'now'. Here, yogic and tantric symbols, riddles and enigmas subvert the language of ordinary experience, as references to night and day, sex and family relationships take on new mystical meanings. These intense poems of personal devotion to a single deity also question traditional belief systems, customs, superstitions, image worship and even moral strictures, in verse that speaks to all men and women regardless of class and caste. |
akka mahadevi vachana kannada: Songs for Siva: Vinaya Chaitanya, 2017-03-20 Hailed as early feminist literary voice, Akka Mahadevi was born in the twelfth-century in the southwest Indian province of Karnatka. As a child she was initiated into the worship of Channamallikarjuna (translated here as 'jasmine-tender'), her village's version of Siva. She was forced to marry her region's ruler. But because she was devoted only to Siva, she left her husband and all her possessions including her clothes, and wandered a naked poet-saint covered only by her long hair. Her vacanas a new populist literary form meaning literally 'to give one's word' collected here demonstrate both her radical devotion to Siva and the radical commitment to equality for her the vira-saiva movement she joined. |

akka mahadevi vachana kannada: God Is Dead, There Is No God Allama Prabhu, Manu Devadevan, 2019-12-10 12-century saint-poet Allama Prabhu, along with Basavanna and Akka Mahadevi, was a founder of the Virashaiva or Lingayat movement in Karnataka. During a period of intense religious ferment, these Sharanas--protégés of Shiva--aimed to dismantle religious hierarchy and bigotry. They rebelled against exploitation based on class, caste and gender through their vachanas, which were ahead of their times. Today, the Lingayats regard these vachanas as their sacred literature. The vachanas of Allama Prabhu are rooted firmly in the idea of experiential reality. From gazing at Shiva from a distance, to uniting with Him, to declaring He doesn't exist and to finally realizing that He exists in a dynamic void--these poems represent Allama's quest for Shiva. They are passionate and filled with yearning; critical and brazen. Translated with great skill and fluidity by Manu Devadevan, God Is Dead, There Is No God is a treat for modern-day seekers as well as poetry lovers. |
akka mahadevi vachana kannada: Alternative Indias , 2005-01-01 The debate over whether religious or secular identities provide the most viable model for a wider national identity has been a continuous feature of Indian politics from the late nineteenth century to the present day. Moreover, in the last thirty years the increasingly communal articulation of popular politics and the gradual rise of a constellation of Hindu nationalist parties headed by the BJP has increased the urgency of this debate. While Indian writing in English has fostered a long tradition of political dissent, and has repeatedly questioned ethnocentric, culturally exclusive forms of political identification, few critics have considered how this literature engages directly with communalism, or charted the literary-political response to key events such as the Babri Masjid / Ramjanmabhumi affair and the recent growth of popular forms of Hindu nationalism. The essays collected in Alternative Indias break new ground in studies of Indian literature and film by discussing how key authors offer contending, ‘alternative’ visions of India and how poetry, fiction and film can revise both the communal and secular versions of national belonging that define current debates about ‘Indianness’. Including contributions from international scholars distinguished in the field of South Asian literary studies, and featuring an informative introduction charting the parallel developments of writing, the nation and communal consciousness, Alternative Indias offers a fresh perspective on the connections and discontinuities between culture and politics in the world’s biggest democracy. |

akka mahadevi vachana kannada: Shree Sharanabasaveshwara Samsthana Kalaburagi : An Overview Dr. Shivkumar Uppe, 2022-07-30 One of the distinguishing features of an organised religion as against the folk religion is the presence of well organised socio-religious institutions through which the religion functions and prospers. Cristianity functioned through the church, buddhism prospered through the sangha and hinduism survived due to the mathas. The church, the sangha, and matha are the socio-religious institutions of their respective religions. Similarly, veerasaivism could prosper through its socio-religious organisations, like pancha pithas, the mathas and the rectories. Unlike other religions of the world, veerasaivism is one which never dependended on royal patronage. It, on the other hand, flourished and prospered through cough the mathas and the rectories. sri sharanabasaveshwara dasoha maha mane at kalburgi is on of such great rectories of veerasaivism which has played a determining role in the struggle for the survival and prosperity of this religious sect in hyderabad karnataka and adjoining areas, especially at the face of muslim rule. It is proposed to make a critical study of the role played by this rectory in maintaining the integrity of veerasaivism, preserving its socio religious institutions and values through several religious and educational programmes and institutions. We start with the assumption that hinduism is general and veerasaivism in particular would not have survived in this area, but for this great religious institution. |

Home today to one in four people, the subcontinent has long been densely populated and deeply connected to Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas through migration and trade. In this magisterial history, Audrey Truschke tells the fascinating story of the region historically known as India—which includes today’s India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and parts of Afghanistan—and the people who have lived there. A sweeping account of five millennia, from the dawn of the Indus Valley Civilization to the twenty-first century, this engaging and richly textured narrative chronicles the most important political, social, religious, intellectual, and cultural events. And throughout, it describes how the region has been continuously reshaped by its astonishing diversity, religious and political innovations, and social stratification. Here, readers will learn about Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Islam, and Sikhism; the Vedas and Mahabharata; Ashoka and the Mauryan Empire; the Silk Road; the Cholas; Indo-Persian rule; the Mughal Empire; European colonialism; national independence movements; the 1947 Partition of India; the recent rise of Hindu nationalism; the challenges of climate change; and much more.
