advanced soil dynamics and earthquake engineering: FUNDAMENTALS OF SOIL DYNAMICS AND EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING BHARAT BHUSHAN PRASAD, 2009-01-19 The majority of the cases of earthquake damage to buildings, bridges, and other retaining structures are influenced by soil and ground conditions. To address such phenomena, Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering is the appropriate discipline. This textbook presents the fundamentals of Soil Dynamics, combined with the basic principles, theories and methods of Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering. It is designed for senior undergraduate and postgraduate students in Civil Engineering & Architecture. The text will also be useful to young faculty members, practising engineers and consultants. Besides, teachers will find it a useful reference for preparation of lectures and for designing short courses in Soil Dynamics and Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering. The book first presents the theory of vibrations and dynamics of elastic system as well as the fundamentals of engineering seismology. With this background, the readers are introduced to the characteristics of Strong Ground Motion, and Deterministic and Probabilistic seismic hazard analysis. The risk analysis and the reliability process of geotechnical engineering are presented in detail. An in-depth study of dynamic soil properties and the methods of their determination provide the basics to tackle the dynamic soil–structure interaction problems. Practical problems of dynamics of beam–foundation systems, dynamics of retaining walls, dynamic earth pressure theory, wave propagation and liquefaction of soil are treated in detail with illustrative examples.
advanced soil dynamics and earthquake engineering: Innovative Earthquake Soil Dynamics Takaji Kokusho, 2017-07-28 Innovative Earthquake Soil Dynamics deals with soil dynamics in earthquake engineering and includes almost all aspects of soil behavior. Both generally accepted basic knowledge as well as advanced and innovative views are accommodated. Major topics are (i) seismic site amplification, (ii) liquefaction and (iii) earthquake-induced slope failure. Associated with the above, basic theories and knowledge on wave propagation/attenuation, soil properties, laboratory tests, numerical analyses, and model tests are addressed in the first part of the book. A great number of earthquake observations in surface soil deposits as well as case histories with new findings are addressed in the later chapters, together with associated laboratory test data. Most of the research results originate from Japan, which is rich in earthquake records and case histories, although mostly isolated from the outside world because of the language barrier. Another important feature characterizing this book is an energy perspective in addition to the force-equilibrium perspective, because it is the author’s strong belief that energy is a very relevant index in determining seismic failures, particularly of soils and soil structures. Innovative Earthquake Soil Dynamics is written for international readers, graduate students, researchers, and practicing engineers, interested in this field.

advanced soil dynamics and earthquake engineering: Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering Ikuo Towhata, 2008-12-19 This book is a product of my long-term activities in both education and research. Its publication was made possible by a financial support supplied by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. As for education, I was told for the first time in 1985 to teach soil dynamics in Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok, Thailand. I collected experimental and field findings from many publications and made a small series of handouts. Since computer technologies were not well advanced in mid 80s, the handouts were products of cut-and-paste in the physical sense. Many pages were even handwritten. Afterwards, I started to teach the same subject in 1995 at University of Tokyo. Since then I have added more information from field investigation and laboratory tests as well as analyses. It has become possible to put all in an electronic media that makes teaching easier. Readers can find that this book includes Japanese writing among English text. This is because I use this text for teaching in Tokyo. The main aim of this book is a collection of data which is useful in understanding the state-of-art technology and its application to new topics. Understanding the fundamental issues is important because practice makes use of many assumptions, hypotheses, and way of thinking. It has been my policy to show reasons why practice employs those ideas by showing experimental and field backgrounds. This idea does not change even today.

advanced soil dynamics and earthquake engineering: Earthquake Analysis and Design of Industrial Structures and Infra-structures Indrajit Chowdhury, Shambhu P. Dasgupta, 2018-10-06 Despite significant development in earthquake analysis and design in the last 50 years or more, different structures related to industry, infra structure and human habitats get destroyed with monotonic regularity under strong motion earthquake. Even the recent earthquake in Mexico in September 2017 killed a number of people and destroyed national assets amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars. Careful evaluation of the technology reveals that, despite significant development in earthquake engineering, most of the books that are available on the market for reference are primarily focused towards buildings and framed type structures. It is accepted that during an earthquake it is buildings that get destroyed most and has been the biggest killers of human life. Yet, there are a number of structures like retaining walls, water tanks, Bunkers, silos, tall chimneys, bridge piers etc that are equally susceptible to earthquake, and if damaged can cause serious trouble and great economic distress. Unfortunately, many of these systems are analyzed by techniques that are too simplified, unrealistic/obsolete or nothing is done about them, ignoring completely the seismic effects, as no guidelines exist for their analysis/design (like seismic analysis of counterfort retaining walls or dynamic pressures on bunker walls etc.). This highly informative book addresses many of these items for which there exists a significant gap in technology and yet remain an important life line of considerable commercial significance. The book is an outcome of authors' academic research and practice across the four continents (USA, Europe, Africa and Asia) in the last thirty two years, where many of these technologies have been put in practice, that got tested against real time earthquakes. All methods presented herein have been published previously in peer reviewed research journals and international conferences of repute before being put to practice. Professionals working in international EPC and consulting engineering firms, graduates taking advanced courses in earthquake engineering, doctoral scholars pursuing research in earthquake engineering in the area of dynamic soil structure interaction (DSSI) and advanced under graduates wanting to self-learn and update themselves on earthquake analysis and design are greatly benefited from this book.

The powerful new business tool-advanced analytics enables many mining companies to aggressively leverage their data in key business decisions and processes with impressive results. From statistical analysis to machine learning and artificial intelligence, the authors show how many analytical tools can improve decisions about everything in the mine value chain, from exploration to marketing. Combining the science of advanced analytics with the mining industrial business solutions, introduce the “Advanced Analytics in Mining Engineering Book” as a practical road map and tools for unleashing the potential buried in your company’s data. The book is aimed at providing mining executives, managers, and research and development teams with an understanding of the business value and applicability of different analytic approaches and helping data analytics leads by giving them a business framework in which to assess the value, cost, and risk of potential analytical solutions. In addition, the book will provide the next generation of miners – undergraduate and graduate IT and mining engineering students – with an understanding of data analytics applied to the mining industry. By providing a book with chapters structured in line with the mining value chain, we will provide a clear, enterprise-level view of where and how advanced data analytics can best be applied. This book highlights the potential to interconnect activities in the mining enterprise better. Furthermore, the book explores the opportunities for optimization and increased productivity offered by better interoperability along the mining value chain – in line with the emerging vision of creating a digital mine with much-enhanced capabilities for modeling, simulation, and the use of digital twins – in line with leading “digital” industries.
