Knowing the truth, what’s real from what’s fake, should be easy. In today’s world, that’s far from the case. In The Certainty Illusion, Timothy Caulfield lifts the curtain on the forces contributing to our information chaos and unpacks why it’s so difficult—sometimes even for experts—to escape the fake. Whether it’s science, our own desire to be good and do the right thing, or the stories and opinions of others, there’s more to sussing out the truth than simply tracking down what feels like an authoritative source. Caulfield argues that these major forces—science, goodness, and opinion—drive beliefs and behaviour, but the ways that they can be corrupted, or worse, used to nefarious ends by bad actors, are endless. While it may feel, at times, as though we are circling the drain of truth, especially as new technologies make it even easier to spread dangerous fictions, Caulfield pulls us out of the vortex and keeps us afloat, helping us recognize and combat the forces that threaten to pull us under.

abstracts written by chatgpt fool scientists: Chatgpt and Other Generative AI Tools Jochen Kuhn, Stefan Küchemann, Knut Neumann, Martina Rau, 2025-02-17 In the past ten years, applications of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) have found rapidly growing use in medicine, science, and daily life. Large language models (LLMs) opened up new avenues in particular for education. LLMs have been used to create interactive educational content for students, stimulate their curiosity, generate code explanations, and develop assessment questions. Additionally, LLMs been applied for language practice, anxiety alleviation, and feedback provision. In higher education, LLMs have shown potential for assisting in medical exam preparation and clinical decision-making. In school education, LLMs can help teachers with automated evaluation of student responses and respective adaptive feedback. More recently LLM-based applications such as chatGPT have been used to generate teaching materials or assessment tasks across different subjects. The fields’ understanding of the effects of the use of LLM-based applications in classroom teaching, however, is still in its infancy. GAI tools may help solving a range of tasks in education, in particular with respect to teachers’ and students’ and teachers’ efforts to generate content. However, it is critical that teachers and students do not overly rely on GAI generated solutions but instead critically assess each solution. Students should furthermore not use GAI tools to avoid investing relevant mental effort to create mental models or, more broadly, build-up competencies.
abstracts written by chatgpt fool scientists: Who Wrote This? Naomi S. Baron, 2023-09-12 Would you read this book if a computer wrote it? Would you even know? And why would it matter? Today's eerily impressive artificial intelligence writing tools present us with a crucial challenge: As writers, do we unthinkingly adopt AI's time-saving advantages or do we stop to weigh what we gain and lose when heeding its siren call? To understand how AI is redefining what it means to write and think, linguist and educator Naomi S. Baron leads us on a journey connecting the dots between human literacy and today's technology. From nineteenth-century lessons in composition, to mathematician Alan Turing's work creating a machine for deciphering war-time messages, to contemporary engines like ChatGPT, Baron gives readers a spirited overview of the emergence of both literacy and AI, and a glimpse of their possible future. As the technology becomes increasingly sophisticated and fluent, it's tempting to take the easy way out and let AI do the work for us. Baron cautions that such efficiency isn't always in our interest. As AI plies us with suggestions or full-blown text, we risk losing not just our technical skills but the power of writing as a springboard for personal reflection and unique expression. Funny, informed, and conversational, Who Wrote This? urges us as individuals and as communities to make conscious choices about the extent to which we collaborate with AI. The technology is here to stay. Baron shows us how to work with AI and how to spot where it risks diminishing the valuable cognitive and social benefits of being literate.

The book’s contributors –from Australia, Asia, Europe, and the United Kingdom –take up a range of issues: including multispecies justice, the challenges of intergenerational justice, dimensions of postcolonial justice, the potential contribution of AI platforms to the judgment process, and the future of judging and law in and beyond the Anthropocene. The project takes its inspiration from existing critical judgment projects. It is, however, thoroughly interdisciplinary. In anticipating future scenarios, and designing or adapting legal principles to respond to them, the book’s contributors have been assisted by climate scientists with expertise in future modelling; they have benefitted from the experience of fiction writers in future worldbuilding; and they have incorporated elements of the future worlds depicted in various texts of speculative fiction and artworks. The judgments are, of necessity, speculative and hypothetical in their subject matter. Thus, taken together, they constitute a collaborative experiment in creating the inclusive and radical imaginaries of the future common law. The Anthropocene Judgments Project will appeal to critical and sociolegal academics, scholars in the environmental humanities, environmental lawyers, students, and others with interests in the pressing issues of ecology, multispecies justice, climate change, the intersection of AI platforms and the law, and the future of law in the Anthropocene.
