Gupta, 2012-12-06 In any rotating machinery system, the bearing has traditionally been a crit ical member of the entire system, since it is the component that permits the relative motion between the stationary and moving parts. Depending on the application, a number of different bearing types have been used, such as oil-lubricated hydrodynamic bearings, gas bearings, magnetic suspensions, rolling element bearings, etc. Hydrodynamic bearings can provide any desired load support, but they are limited in stiffness and the associated power loss may be quite large. Gas bearings are used for high-precision applications where the supported loads are relatively light, bearing power losses are very low, and the rotating speeds generally high. For super precision components where no frictional dissipation or bearing power loss can be tolerated, magnetic suspensions are employed; again, the load support requirements are very low. Rolling element bearings have been widely used for those applications that require greater bearing versatility, due to the requirements for high-load and high-stiffness characteristics, while allowing moderate power loss and permitting variable speeds. A study of the dynamic interaction of rolling elements is, therefore, the subject of this text. Texts covering the analysis and design methodology of rolling elements are very limited. The construction of these structures is very diverse and in the work these are considered from the modelling point of view. As well as the conventional twisted structures, braid and plaited structures and parallel assemblies are modelled and analysed, first for their assembly and secondly for their mechanical behaviour. Also since the components are assemblies of components, fibres into yarns, into strands, and into ropes the hierarchical nature of the construction is considered. The focus of the modelling is essentially toward load extension behaviour but there is reference to bending of ropes, encompassed by the two extremes, no slip between the components and zero friction resistance to component slip. Friction in ropes is considered both between the rope components, sliding, sawing and scissoring, and within the components, dilation and distortion, these latter modes being used to model component set, the phenomenon instrumental in rope proofing. The exploitation of the modelling is closed by the suggested modelling and analysis of component wear and life limitation and also of rope steady state heating. These will require extensive experimentation to extract the necessary coefficients, achievable by parallel testing of prototypes and similar structures. This development is focused on the modelling and analysis of ropes and other similar structures. All the modelling is based on the Principle of Virtual Work and admissible modes of deformation. Finally this book is directed towards the various industries involved in design, manufacture and use of ropes, stays and other similar structures. |

This speech “chain” starts with the formation of a linguistic message in a speaker's brain and ends with the arrival of the message in a listener's brain. Given the intricacy of the dynamic speech process and its fundamental importance in human communication, this monograph is intended to provide a comprehensive material on mathematical models of speech dynamics and to address the following issues: How do we make sense of the complex speech process in terms of its functional role of speech communication? How do we quantify the special role of speech timing? How do the dynamics relate to the variability of speech that has often been said to seriously hamper automatic speech recognition? How do we put the dynamic process of speech into a quantitative form to enable detailed analyses? And finally, how can we incorporate the knowledge of speech dynamics into computerized speech analysis and recognition algorithms? The answers to all these questions require building and applying computational models for the dynamic speech process. What are the compelling reasons for carrying out dynamic speech modeling? We provide the answer in two related aspects. First, scientific inquiry into the human speech code has been relentlessly pursued for several decades. As an essential carrier of human intelligence and knowledge, speech is the most natural form of human communication. Embedded in the speech code are linguistic (as well as para-linguistic) messages, which are conveyed through four levels of the speech chain. Underlying the robust encoding and transmission of the linguistic messages are the speech dynamics at all the four levels. Mathematical modeling of speech dynamics provides an effective tool in the scientific methods of studying the speech chain. Such scientific studies help understand why humans speak as they do and how humans exploit redundancy and variability by way of multitiered dynamic processes to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of human speech communication. Second, advancement of human language technology, especially that in automatic recognition of natural-style human speech is also expected to benefit from comprehensive computational modeling of speech dynamics. The limitations of current speech recognition technology are serious and are well known. A commonly acknowledged and frequently discussed weakness of the statistical model underlying current speech recognition technology is the lack of adequate dynamic modeling schemes to provide correlation structure across the temporal speech observation sequence. Unfortunately, due to a variety of reasons, the majority of current research activities in this area favor only incremental modifications and improvements to the existing HMM-based state-of-the-art. For example, while the dynamic and correlation modeling is known to be an important topic, most of the systems nevertheless employ only an ultra-weak form of speech dynamics; e.g., differential or delta parameters. Strong-form dynamic speech modeling, which is the focus of this monograph, may serve as an ultimate solution to this problem. After the introduction chapter, the main body of this monograph consists of four chapters. advanced dynamics modeling and analysis: DESIGN, SYNTHESIS AND CONTROL OF A MECHANICAL SERVO PRESS: AN INDUSTRIAL APPLICATION , Abstract Due to precision, flexibility, simplicity in construction, easy control, higher speed and lower energy consumptions, servo presses have recently become popular in metal forming applications. Servo press technology combines the advantages of hydraulic and conventional mechanical presses without their drawbacks. This study presents design, construction and demonstration of a servo crank press system for metal forming operations. The research involves kinematics and motion optimization, dynamic modeling, structural design and analysis, servo motor selection, automation and control, and operational performances of the servo press. The press used in this work has a load capacity of 50 ton and stroke capacity of 200 mm. Firstly, optimized trajectories of ram scenarios are generated. Then dynamic modeling using Lagrange approach is presented. Next structural model is constructed, and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of press parts are performed within safety limits. A servo motor with a reduction unit is selected based on dynamic model. After that a new automation system is developed, and Cascade Feed-Forward (CasFF) control is applied. Moreover, four motion scenarios (crank, dwell, link, and soft motion) are employed for the performance assessment of press. Finally, the dynamic model is verified by the experimental results. The research study is carried out under support and grant of an industrial project, aiming to provide know-how to industry and researchers.
