analytical methods in vibrations: Analytical and Numerical Methods for Vibration Analyses Jong-Shyong Wu, 2013-08-05 Illustrates theories and associated mathematical expressions with numerical examples using various methods, leading to exact solutions, more accurate results, and more computationally efficient techniques This book presents the derivations of the equations of motion for all structure foundations using either the continuous model or the discrete model. This mathematical display is a strong feature of the book as it helps to explain in full detail how calculations are reached and interpreted. In addition to the simple 'uniform' and 'straight' beams, the book introduces solution techniques for the complicated ‘non uniform’ beams (including linear or non-linear tapered beams), and curved beams. Most of the beams are analyzed by taking account of the effects of shear deformation and rotary inertia of the beams themselves as well as the eccentricities and mass moments of inertia of the attachments. Demonstrates approaches which dramatically cut CPU times to a fraction of conventional FEM Presents mode shapes in addition to natural frequencies, which are critical for designers Gives detailed derivations for continuous and discrete model equations of motions Summarizes the analytical and numerical methods for the natural frequencies, mode shapes, and time histories of straight structures rods shafts Euler beams strings Timoshenko beams membranes/thin plates Conical rods and shafts Tapered beams Curved beams Has applications for students taking courses including vibration mechanics, dynamics of structures, and finite element analyses of structures, the transfer matrix method, and Jacobi method This book is ideal for graduate students in mechanical, civil, marine, aeronautical engineering courses as well as advanced undergraduates with a background in General Physics, Calculus, and Mechanics of Material. The book is also a handy reference for researchers and professional engineers. |

analytical methods in vibrations: Analytical Methods in Rotor Dynamics Andrew D. Dimarogonas, Stefanos A. Paipetis, Thomas G. Chondros, 2013-02-19 The design and construction of rotating machinery operating at supercritical speeds was, in the 1920s, an event of revolutionary importance for the then new branch of dynamics known as rotor dynamics. In the 1960s, another revolution occurred: In less than a decade, imposed by operational and economic needs, an increase in the power of turbomachinery by one order of magnitude took place. Dynamic analysis of complex rotor forms became a necessity, while the importance of approximate methods for dynamic analysis was stressed. Finally, the emergence of fracture mechanics, as a new branch of applied mechanics, provided analytical tools to investigate crack influence on the dynamic behavior of rotors. The scope of this book is based on all these developments. No topics related to the well-known classical problems are included, rather the book deals exclusively with modern high-power turbomachinery. |

analytical methods in vibrations: Vibration Analysis Of Plates By The Superposition Method Daniel J Gorman, 1999-05-21 The elegance and logic of the superposition method have made it a highly attractive analytical procedure for obtaining accurate mathematical solutions to plate vibration problems. Its applicability to vast families of these problems, ranging from the dynamic behaviour of isotropic and orthotropic plates to laminated plate behaviour, is well demonstrated in the technical literature. Now, at last, a comprehensive book is made available to those who wish to use this powerful analytical technique. Beginning with a thorough and lucid introduction to the superposition method as it applies to free vibration of thin isotropic rectangular plates, with all combinations of classical boundary conditions, the book describes procedures for handling vast families of realistic practical plate vibration problems. These include orthotropic plates, point-supported plates, plates resting on elastic edge supports, plates with in-plane forces, buckling of plates, etc. The reader is subsequently introduced to utilization of the superposition method for the analysis of thick Mindlin plates as well as transverse-shear-deformable laminated plates. Particular emphasis is placed on plate free vibration analysis, with a list of pertinent publications attached to each chapter. The superposition method is unique in that all solutions obtained satisfy the governing differential equations exactly throughout the entire domain of the plate. The boundary conditions are satisfied to any desired degree of accuracy.Despite the attractive features of this analytical method, many researchers and designers have access only to published papers related to particular problems. With this new book, they have for the first time a comprehensive, illustrated description of the means of exploiting the superposition method. They will be able to prepare their own computer schemes and analyse any plate vibration problem of interest. |

analytical methods in vibrations: Vibration with Control Daniel J. Inman, 2006-11-02 Engineers are becoming increasingly aware of the problems caused by vibration in engineering design, particularly in the areas of structural health monitoring and smart structures. Vibration is a constant problem as it can impair performance and lead to fatigue, damage and the failure of a structure. Control of vibration is a key factor in preventing such detrimental results. This book presents a homogenous treatment of vibration by including those factors from control that are relevant to modern vibration analysis, design and measurement. Vibration and control are established on a firm mathematical basis and the disciplines of vibration, control, linear algebra, matrix computations, and applied functional analysis are connected. Key Features: Assimilates the discipline of contemporary structural vibration with active control Introduces the use of Matlab into the solution of vibration and vibration control problems Provides a unique blend of practical and theoretical developments Contains examples and problems along with a solutions manual and power point presentations Vibration with Control is an essential text for practitioners, researchers, and graduate students as it can be used as a reference text for its complex chapters and topics, or in a tutorial setting for those improving their knowledge of vibration and learning about control for the first time. Whether or not you are familiar with vibration and control, this book is an excellent introduction to this emerging and increasingly important engineering discipline. |
analytical methods in vibrations: Numerical Analysis of Vibrations of Structures under Moving Inertial Load Czesław I. Bajer, Bartłomiej Dyniewicz, 2012-04-27 Moving inertial loads are applied to structures in civil engineering, robotics, and mechanical engineering. Some fundamental books exist, as well as thousands of research papers. Well known is the book by L. Frýba, Vibrations of Solids and Structures Under Moving Loads, which describes almost all problems concerning non-inertial loads. This book presents broad description of numerical tools successfully applied to structural dynamic analysis. Physically we deal with non-conservative systems. The discrete approach formulated with the use of the classical finite element method results in elemental matrices, which can be directly added to global structure matrices. A more general approach is carried out with the space-time finite element method. In such a case, a trajectory of the moving concentrated parameter in space and time can be simply defined. We consider structures described by pure hyperbolic differential equations such as strings and structures described by hyperbolic-parabolic differential equations such as beams and plates. More complex structures such as frames, grids, shells, and three-dimensional objects, can be treated with the use of the solutions given in this book. |

analytical methods in vibrations: Vibration Analysis of Rotors Chong-Won Lee, 2012-12-06 This text is intended for use as an advanced course in either rotordynamics or vibration at the graduate level. This text has mostly grown out of the research work in my laboratory and the lectures given to graduate students in the Mechanical Engineering Department, KAIST. The text contains a variety of topics not normally found in rotordynamics or vibration textbooks. The text emphasizes the analytical aspects and is thus quite different from conventional rotordynamics texts; potential readers are expected to have a firm background in elementary rotordynamics and vibration. In most previously published rotordynamics texts, the behavior of simple rotors has been of a primary concern, while more realistic, multi-degree-f-freedom or continuous systems are seldom treated in a rigorous way, mostly due to the difficulty of a mathematical treatment of such complicated systems. When one wanted to gain a deep insight into dynamic phenomena of complicated rotor systems, one has, in the past, either had to rely on computational techniques, such as the transfer matrix and finite element methods, or cautiously to extend ideas learned from simple rotors whose analytical solutions are readily available. The former methods are limited in the interpretation of results, since the calculations relate only to the simulated case, not to more general system behavior. Ideas learned from simple rotors can, fortunately, often be extended to many practical rotor systems, but there is of course no guarantee of their validity. |
