amen ra pictures: Holy Images (Routledge Revivals) Edwyn Bevan, 2014-04-08 First published in 1940, this title presents four of the Gifford Lectures in natural theology given by Edwyn Bevan in 1933: ‘An Inquiry into Idolatry and Image-Worship in Ancient Paganism and Christianity’. Reference is made throughout all four lectures not only to the conventional disputes in Western Christianity, but also to the attitudes of Hebrew, Pagan, Patristic, Muslim and Eastern thinkers towards the role of symbols and symbolism in worship. In this way, a subject of perennial fascination and importance is placed in a broad historical context, and innovative lines of enquiry are developed with clarity and insight. Holy Images offers an intriguing and easily accessible resource to students of theology, comparative religion, religious anthropology and philosophy.

amen ra pictures: The Weight of Images Katariina Kyrölä, 2016-02-17 The Weight of Images explores the ways in which media images can train their viewers’ bodies. Proposing a shift away from an understanding of spectatorship as being constituted by acts of the mind, this book favours a theorization of relations between bodies and images as visceral, affective engagements that shape our body image - with close attention to one particularly charged bodily characteristic in contemporary western culture: fat. The first mapping of the ways in which fat, gendered bodies are represented across a variety of media forms and genres, from reality television to Hollywood movies, from TV sitcoms to documentaries, from print magazine and news media to online pornography, The Weight of Images contends that media images of fat bodies are never only about fat; rather, they are about our relation to corporeal vulnerability overall. A ground-breaking volume, engaging with a rich variety of media and cultural texts, whilst examining the possibilities of critical auto-ethnography to unravel how body images take shape affectively between bodies and images, this book will appeal to scholars and students of sociology, media, cultural and gender studies, with interests in embodiment and affect.

amen ra pictures: Day Kenneth Goldsmith, 2003 Poetry. I am spending my 39th year practicing uncreativity. On Friday, September 1, 2000, I began retyping the day's NEW YORK TIMES word for word, letter for letter, from the upper left hand corner to the lower right hand corner, page by page. With these words, Kenneth Goldsmith embarked upon a project which he termed uncreative writing, that is: uncreativity as a constraint-based process; uncreativity as a creative practice. By typing page upon page, making no distinction between article, editorial and advertisement, disregarding all typographic and graphical treatments, Goldsmith levels the daily newspaper. DAY is a monument to the ephemeral, comprised of yesterday's news, a fleeting moment concretized, captured, then reframed into the discourse of literature. When I reach 40, I hope to have cleansed myself of all creativity-Kenneth Goldsmith.

amen ra pictures: The Art in Ancient Egypt Georges Perrot, Charles Chipiez, 2020-12-17 The Art in Ancient Egypt in two volumes is a study of Egyptian arts and of their connection with the national religion and civilization written by French archeologists and historians Georges Perrot and Charles Chipiez. The aim of the work was to trace the course of the great evolution which culminated in the age of Pericles and came to an end in that of Marcus Aurelius. That evolution forms a complete entirety – an unbroken chain of cause and effect uniting the two eras. Using carefully selected examples authors prove that the art of the Egyptians went through the same process of development as those of other nationalities, earlier and later ones, and that the unique quality of the sculptures and paintings of the Nile Valley was a persistent affinity to simplification, which comes in part from the habit created by writing the hieroglyphic and in part from the materials used.
amen ra pictures: A History of Art in Ancient Egypt (1&2) Georges Perrot, Charles Chipiez, 2023-12-12 In 'A History of Art in Ancient Egypt,' Volumes 1 and 2, Georges Perrot and Charles Chipiez undertake an ambitious exploration of the aesthetic and cultural riches of ancient Egyptian civilization. Through their exhaustive examination, they present a nuanced tapestry of the artistic achievements that shaped one of history's most enduring societies. The collection distinguishes itself by the diversity of its content, ranging from architecture, sculpture, and painting, to the lesser-known realms of decorative arts. It is a significant compilation that not only highlights landmark monuments but also delves into the symbolism and functionality that underpinned Egyptian art, offering readers an intricate understanding of its historical and cultural context. The collaboration between Perrot, an esteemed archaeologist, and Chipiez, an architectural historian, brings a profound depth of scholarly expertise to the work. Their backgrounds allow for a comprehensive analysis that bridges art with its societal functions, aligning the collection with broader academic discussions on ancient civilizations and their expressions of identity, power, and religiosity. This synthesis of perspectives complements the overarching theme by providing a multifaceted exploration of how material culture reflects societal values and historical changes. This anthology is recommended for readers seeking to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of ancient Egyptian art and society. The meticulous research and broad scope of 'A History of Art in Ancient Egypt' offer a unique educational opportunity, inviting a contemplative engagement with the artifacts that have shaped our understanding of ancient Egypt. For scholars and enthusiasts alike, this collection serves as both a comprehensive reference and a source of inspiration, fostering a deeper appreciation for the nuances and complexities of ancient artistic endeavors.

amen ra pictures: A History of Egypt from the End of the Neolithic Period to the Death of Cleopatra VII B.C. 30 (Routledge Revivals) E. A. Wallis Budge, 2013-09-13 Sir E. A. Wallis Budge (1857-1934) was Keeper of the British Museum’s department of oriental antiquities from 1894 until his retirement in 1924. Carrying out many missions to Egypt in search of ancient objects, Budge was hugely successful in collecting papyri, statues and other artefacts for the trustees of the British Museum: numbering into the thousands and of great cultural and historical significance. Budge published well over 100 monographs, which shaped the development of future scholarship and are still of great academic value today, dealing with subjects such as Egyptian religion, history and literature. This volume, first published in 1902, is the sixth of eight volumes by Budge dealing with different periods in the history of Egypt. The narrative begins with the reign of Nes-ba-Tettet, the first king of the XXIst Dynasty, and ends with the third king of the XXVIth Dynasty, Psammetichus II. Covering the years 1100-600 B.C., Budge analyses how Egypt changed shape under the rule of different kings, and witnessed both decline in and consolidation of power at varying points. This rich and important period of Egyptian history is explored in a classic work of great value to those interested in Egyptology and archaeology.

amen ra pictures: Monstrous Nature Robin L. Murray, Joseph K. Heumann, 2016-10-01 Godzilla, a traditional natural monster and representation of cinema’s subgenre of natural attack, also provides a cautionary symbol of the dangerous consequences of mistreating the natural world—monstrous nature on the attack. Horror films such as Godzilla invite an exploration of the complexities of a monstrous nature that humanity both creates and embodies. Robin L. Murray and Joseph K. Heumann demonstrate how the horror film and its offshoots can often be understood in relation to a monstrous nature that has evolved either deliberately or by accident and that generates fear in humanity as both character and audience. This connection between fear and the natural world opens up possibilities for ecocritical readings often missing from research on monstrous nature, the environment, and the horror film. Organized in relation to four recurring environmental themes in films that construct nature as a monster—anthropomorphism, human ecology, evolution, and gendered landscapes—the authors apply ecocritical perspectives to reveal the multiple ways nature is constructed as monstrous or in which the natural world itself constructs monsters. This interdisciplinary approach to film studies fuses cultural, theological, and scientific critiques to explore when and why nature becomes monstrous.

amen ra pictures: Notes For The Nile Hardwicke D. Rawnsley, 2013-12-02 First published in 2006. This delightful book written in 1892 by a founder of the National Trust is regarded as a classic of high Victorian travel writing. After three journeys to the East, Rawnsley decided that existing guide-books were not sufficiently explicit and set out to write this witty and informative account that reflects a highly likeable character to whom it is impossible not to warm. Beginning with observations such as ‘everything can be got in Cairo except good English tea’ and ‘never expect your guide to know anything about Egyptian history or the monuments up the Nile’, Rawnsley sets off to show us the best of Egypt during a golden age of exploration and touring, he visits the two egyptologists to whom he dedicates this book, joining Flinders Petrie at the Medum pyramid to observe the excavations, and talking to Emile Brugsch about the royal mummies which had been brought from their tombs to the Cairo Museum just a few years previously. In the ruins of Thebes and Luxor he is struck by what he calls ‘the silence of the dead’ which he contrasts with the obvious love of the ancient Egyptians for music, as shown in their art and in the many hymns preserved in papyri. Although the music itself has been lost, it seemed a pity to Rawnsley that the hymns, dirges, poems and wise sayings should remain unknown to the general reader because of their unmusical form. He presents a number of them here, translated and rendered into metre, a unique contribution that greatly enhances the enjoyment of Egypt at first hand or at a distance. The work concludes with what Rawnsley considers to be its most important part – the timeless wisdom embodied in the sayings of Ptah-hotep taken from the Prisse papyrus.

amen ra pictures: Gothic Cinema Katharina Rein, 2023-06-29 Gothic Cinema closes a gap in German-language film discourse: for the first time, the volume sheds light on a hitherto little-discussed film context. It considers Gothic Cinema as a form of unofficial historiography that allows a look not only at the history of film and its technique, but also at moral concepts, gender relations, collective fears or aesthetic currents. A delimitation and definition of the term and the central elements of the Gothic are followed by a comprehensive historical overview from 1896 to the present day. Three in-depth analyses of individual post-2015 gothic films and television series round out the review. On the one hand, the examples examined are representative in terms of typical elements, motifs or topoi, and on the other hand, they exhibit peculiarities and breaks that prove fruitful for a cultural and media studies investigation.

Some remarkable connections... In the pursuit of the knowledge of magic in ancient Egypt, we again arrive right at the door of the Stars and Constellations. We are not brought here by mysterious objects or elusive ideas, no, we are indeed guided by the ancient Egyptians themselves. We seem to have forgotten how important the Word is, even the idea of the Word descends from the ancient Egyptians, and surely they knew how to use their words. The word of this book would be Heka! The Power of Powers, The Power of the universal magical forces. The supreme!
