In Flying Lessons: One Woman's Story, the author relates in a conversational style how she overcame personal fears, social barriers, and economic obstacles to become a professional airplane and helicopter flight instructor, an aviation ground school instructor, an U.S. Army helicopter pilot, and an aviation business owner. The author's primary goal is to entertain, but the book also educates and encourages readers, especially those who may have a secret desire to learn to fly.
amelia earhart porsche: The Darwin Awards Wendy Northcutt, 2002-04-30 The hilarious New York Times bestselling phenomenon and the perfect funny gift! The Darwin Awards shares the stories of those human beings who improve the gene pool by removing themselves from it in a sublimely idiotic fashion. Marvel at the thief who tries to steal live electrical wires. Gape at the lawnchair jockey who floats to a height of 16,000 feet suspended by helium balloons. And learn from the man who peers into a gasoline can using a cigarette lighter. All contend for Darwin Awards when their choices culminate in magnificent misadventures. These tales of trial and awe-inspiring error-verified by the author and endorsed by website readers-illustrate the ongoing saga of survival of the fittest in all its selective glory. The Darwin Awards vividly portrays the finest examples of evolution in action, and shows us just how uncommon common sense can be.

amelia earhart porsche: Exploits and Opportunities of an Airman David Shifflett, 2024-03-18 Exploits and Opportunities of an Airman is about the adventures through travel throughout Central America and the northern and southern parts of Europe, exploiting the current and historical. It is also about how having a family changes your outlook and values that you place on yourself, those around you, and your career. By bettering yourself with knowledge and credentials, you open doors for chances to prove something not only to others but also to oneself! The opportunities of this book are explained. I was fortunate that those who went before me were willing and able to pass on their knowledge so I could build upon that knowledge and experience. While I was TDY in Panama, we had an old Black man who was our line chief. Some people would look at that as a derogatory statement. Yes, he was a Black man--but he was more, so much more. He was a wise and knowledgeable man. He knew his job, he knew the plane, and he knew how to handle young men. He is one of the men to whom this book is dedicated. It was about working together to ensure that we had planes in the air to help those in need. It was Work hard and play hard. I carried those thoughts with me my whole career! While in Panama Canal, I had the opportunities to experience the wonder of the canal, as well as the devastation to those individuals who helped build it. I played on a golf course that was made through a dense forest. If your ball went into the woods, you did not go in to get it. I learned that first thing in the morning, you did not just go into the wheel well of a plane--it could have a nasty large snake or lizard that crawled up in there during the night. All in all, Panama was a fascinating and vibrant country. Working on airplanes and then watching them take off after you had repaired it gives you such a feeling of accomplishment that is rarely felt. When you add the knowledge that the plane is heading to help someone, there is no greater feeling. I have been an aviation enthusiast since I was ten and my neighbor would take me to the Frederick airport in western Maryland. Today, it is the AOPA (Airmen Owners and Pilots Association) headquarters. Being in the Air Force has afforded me the opportunity to play with airplanes and enjoy my other passion for travel. Through my travels, I had looked inside of live volcanoes that erupted nine months later. I was able to see the villas in Sicily that were used in the Godfather movies. On the other hand, I was in Morocco six months after we attacked Libya the first time, and I traveled all the way down to the foothills of the Atlas Mountains.

amelia earhart porsche: The Four Corners of the Sky Michael Malone, 2010-04-01 There's humor and action aplenty, but Four Corners is also a warmhearted look at how we love and forgive. Five hundred and forty-four pages never seemed so short—People, 4 stars, People Pick The Four Corners of the Sky is master storyteller Michael Malone's new novel of love, secrets, and the mysterious bonds of families. Malone brings characters to life as only he can, exploring the questions that defy easy answers: Is love a choice or a calling? Why do the ties of family bind so tightly? And is forgiveness a gift to others...or a gift we give ourselves? In small towns between the North Carolina Piedmont and the coast the best scenery is often in the sky. On flat sweeps of red clay and scrub pine the days move monotonously, safely, but above, in the blink of an eye, dangerous clouds can boil out of all four corners of the sky...The flat slow land starts to shiver and anything can happen. In such a storm, on Annie Peregrine's seventh birthday, her father gave her the airplane and minutes later drove out of her life. Thus begins an enchanting novel that bursts with energy from the first pages, and sweeps you off on a journey of unforgettable characters, hilarious encounters, and haunting secrets. Praise for The Four Corners of the Sky: Devoted Michael Malone fans have been waiting more than twenty years for another Handling Sin, perhaps the greatest road novel since Tom Jones. The wait is over...— Bill Ott, editor-in-chief, Booklist Secrets and intrigues among the honeysuckle: a sun-washed yarn of the New South, affectionately told. —Kirkus starred review The Four Corners of the Sky is the best thing I have read in years and you can imagine how much I read.   amelia earhart porsche: Amelia Earhart's Terraplane Douglas Westfall, 2014-07-30 Amelia Earhart owned cars, planes and a home in the Hollywood hills, yet the least known of these was a 1932 Hudson in which she gave her step son George Putnam Jr. driving lessons. A gift of the Terraplane at an auto show in the depths of the 1929 Great Depression, proved to be just a promotional gimmick, but it is a car that she kept. While she may have gotten lost in her 1936 Lockheed Electra plane, her 1932 Terraplane is still here in California.
