  alp 125: Conjugated Microporous Polymers Atsushi Nagai, 2025-06-04 Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) with various structures and properties have been synthesized, and it is possible to design the molecular structure of the conjugated skeleton and nanopores. Research on CMPs in clean energy technologies is important for the improvement of CMP-based materials and their applications in energy and environmental engineering. CMPs show great potential for solving energy and environmental problems such as gas adsorption, photocatalysis, solar energy conversion, and electrical energy storage and conversion. This book summarizes the progress in the synthesis and design of CMPs and their applications in clean energy technologies such as hydrogen generation and storage, carbon dioxide adsorption and conversion, rechargeable batteries, supercapacitors, and photocatalytic H2 production. Biliary tract cancer is a deadly disease with a very low five-year survival rate. BTC is assumed to be the fifth most common gastrointestinal malignancy and can be categorized into extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (EHC), intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (IHC) and gallbladder cancer (GBC), based on the anatomic location. Patients suffering from BTC can be currently treated with radiation therapy, palliative or with a combination of two chemotherapeutics, cisplatin and gemcitabine. Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most prevalent form of liver cancers and was responsible for over 830,000 deaths related to cancer worldwide in 2020. HCC is therefore the second most leading cause of cancer deaths globally. Current treatment options encompass targeted therapy with sorafenib, immunotherapy and post-surgery adjuvant chemotherapy. Factors that might contribute to these dismal outcomes are diagnosis at an already late stage, due to unspecific symptoms, limited therapeutic options, lack of targets and understanding of molecular processes during carcinogenesis as well as resistance to current chemotherapy/treatment.   alp 125: Llangorse Crannog Alan Lane, Mark Redknap, 2020-02-28 The crannog on Llangorse Lake near Brecon in mid Wales was discovered in 1867 and first excavated in 1869 by two local antiquaries, Edgar and Henry Dumbleton, who published their findings over the next four years. In 1988 dendrochronological dates from submerged palisade planks established its construction in the ninth century, and a combined off- and on-shore investigation of the site was started as a joint project between Cardiff University and Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales. The subsequent surveys and excavation (1989-1994, 2004) resulted in the recovery of a remarkable time capsule of life in the late ninth and tenth century, on the only crannog yet identified in Wales. This publication re-examines the early investigations, describes in detail the anatomy of the crannog mound and its construction, and the material culture found. The crannog’s treasures include early medieval secular and religious metalwork, evidence for manufacture, the largest depository of early medieval carpentry in Wales and a remarkable richly embroidered silk and linen textile which is fully analysed and placed in context. The crannog’s place in Welsh history is explored, as a royal llys (‘court’) within the kingdom of Brycheiniog. Historical record indicates the site was destroyed in 916 by Aethelflaed, the Mercian queen, in the course of the Viking wars of the early tenth century. The subsequent significance of the crannog in local traditions and its post-medieval occupation during a riotous dispute in the reign Elizabeth I are also discussed. Two logboats from the vicinity of the crannog are analysed, and a replica described. The cultural affinities of the crannog and its material culture is assessed, as are their relationship to origin myths for the kingdom, and to probable links with early medieval Ireland. The folk tales associated with the lake are explored, in a book that brings together archaeology, history, myths and legends, underwater and terrestrial archaeology.

Irreversible damage or reversible imbalance of such homeostatic processes may initiate cancers by altering the regulation of the molecular machinery. Systemic homeostasis-related genes have been found to be intimately involved in oncological processes and in some instances have shown prognostic value. Thus, future gene targeting approaches for cancer should not only focus on classical cancer drivers but also address systemic homeostasis-related genetic mechanisms. Identification of systemic homeostasis-related genes with diagnostic, prognostic or therapeutic value can advance translational cancer research. Increasing numbers of research studies have reported systemic homeostasis-related genes’ relevance to various types of cancer. For example, cancer cells have been shown to activate a critical mechanism of oxygen homeostasis—hypoxia inducible factors (HIFs) family genes, in order to adapt to the tumor microenvironment and develop into a more aggressive phenotype. In addition, methylene tetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase (MTHFD) family genes are involved in mitochondrial one-carbon metabolism, which is essential for maintaining systemic metabolic homeostasis, and have recently been found overexpressed in many cancers and have been correlated to poor survival outcomes. The overexpression of transferrin family genes with iron transporting function has been linked with iron accumulation, which is a known initiating factor in cancer. Another example is Forkhead box O (FOXO) family genes, which serve as a critical regulator of immune homeostasis and can regulate cancer immunity by negatively regulating the expression of immunosuppressive gene-programmed death 1 ligand 1 (PD-L1).Apart from these examples, other systemic homeostatic mechanisms such as glucose homeostasis, energy homeostasis, lipid homeostasis, phosphate homeostasis, cholesterol homeostasis, and mineral homeostasis may also be implicated in cancer pathogenesis. Although accruing research is focused on describing systemic homeostatic mechanisms in cancer biology, several research questions remain unaddressed. The utilization of recent analytic tools and bioinformatics as systems biology approaches has the potential to address these research gaps. Therefore, in this special issue we will collect articles focusing on the application of bioinformatics and systems biology based investigations of systemic homeostatic mechanisms in malignant diseases. Both original research and review articles are welcomed, however publications based on the analysis on only one database will not be accepted (e.g. TCGA).

Chapters on cardiac, brain, neural, liver, kidney, skeletal muscle, bone, pancreatic, skin, and lung resident stem cells will assist in defining the level of success that has been achieved and the direction for the road ahead.
