agilent high sensitivity kit: Neuroglia Molecular Mechanisms in Psychiatric Disorders Caterina Scuderi, Mami Noda, Alexei Verkhratsky, 2019-01-21 Neuropsychiatric disorders have long been considered as specific dysfunctions of neuronal functions. Studies of the recent decade, however, have challenged this simplistic view, highlighting the important role played by neuroglial cells in the onset and/or progression of neuropsychiatric diseases. In the central nervous system (CNS) non-excitable neuroglia are represented by cells of ectodermal origin (astrocytes, mainly responsible for CNS homeostasis and oligodendrocytes that provide myelination and support for axons) and mesodermal origin (microglial cells that are scions of foetal macrophages entering the neural tube early in development; these cells provide for CNS defence and contribute to shaping neuronal networks). Pathological changes of neuroglia are complex; these changes are classified into reactive gliosis (astrogliosis, activation of microglia and hypertrophy of oligodendroglial precursors), gliodegeneration with loss of function and glial pathological remodelling. Combination of these processes defines the evolution of neurological diseases in general and neuropsychiatric disorders in particular. In this research topic we addressed the contribution of neuroglia to major neuropsychiatric pathologies including major depression, schizophrenia, and addictive disorders.

agilent high sensitivity kit: Forensic Genetic Approaches for Identification of Human Skeletal Remains Angie Ambers, 2022-11-15 Forensic Genetic Approaches for Identification of Human Skeletal Remains: Challenges, Best Practices, and Emerging Technologies provides best practices on processing bone samples for DNA testing. The book outlines forensic genetics tools that are available for the identification of skeletal remains in contemporary casework and historical/archaeological investigations. Although the book focuses primarily on the use of DNA for direct identification or kinship analyses, it also highlights complementary disciplines often used in concert with genetic data to make positive identifications, such as forensic anthropology, forensic odontology, and forensic art/sculpting. Unidentified human remains are often associated with tragic events, such as fires, terrorist attacks, natural disasters, war conflicts, genocide, airline crashes, homicide, and human rights violations under oppressive totalitarian regimes. In these situations, extensive damage to soft tissues often precludes the use of such biological samples in the identification process. In contrast, bone material is the most resilient, viable sample type for DNA testing. DNA recovered from bone often is degraded and in low quantities due to the effects of human decomposition, environmental exposure, and the passage of time. The complexities of bone microstructure and its rigid nature make skeletal remains one of the most challenging sample types for DNA testing. Provides best practices on processing bone samples for DNA testing Presents detailed coverage of proper facilities design for skeletal remains processing, selection of optimal skeletal elements for DNA recovery, specialized equipment needed, preparation and cleaning of bone samples for DNA extraction, and more Highlights complementary disciplines often used in concert with genetic data to make positive identifications, such as forensic anthropology, forensic odontology, and forensic art/sculpting
agilent high sensitivity kit: Molecular Mechanisms of Drug Resistance And Strategies of Sensitization in Breast Cancer, 2nd edition Yan Cheng, Jin-Ming Yang, Ceshi Chen, Yi Zhang, 2024-01-11 Basic scientific background Breast cancer is one of the most common cancer and the most frequent cause of cancer death among women worldwide. Currently, subtyping breast cancers into hormone receptor (HR) positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 overexpressing (HER2+), and triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is the basis of diagnosing and treating this disease. The main treatment strategies for breast cancer include surgery, endocrine therapy, molecular targeted therapy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy and gene therapy. However, resistance of breast cancer cells to chemotherapeutic agents, molecular targeted therapies and immunotherapy may occur either intrinsically or de nova, and is often ultimately responsible for treatment failure. Therefore, drug resistance poses a major challenge to breast cancer treatment. Current developments: Drug resistance in breast cancer is a complex clinical condition originating from a wide range of molecular alterations. The development of endocrine therapy resistance is believed to be associated with many cellular changes, such as ESR1 gene mutations, bypassing estrogen signaling pathway and altered tamoxifen metabolism. Meanwhile, changes in immune response, alternation of drug-binding property and downstream pathways are involved in the mechanisms of drug resistance in HER2+ breast cancer. In addition, resistance to chemotherapeutic agents predominantly arises from increased drug efflux and cross resistance. Current studies suggest that treatment strategies and therapeutics have to be designed specifically to each patient in different clinical situations. The use of modern genomic, proteomic and functional analytical techniques has contributed to identify novel genes and signaling networks involved in breast cancer drug resistance. Moreover, the use of high-throughput techniques in combination with bioinformatics and systems biology approaches has aided the interrogation of clinical samples and allowed the identification of molecular signatures and genotypes that predict responses to certain drugs. Despite much progress has been made in the field of breast cancer drug resistance, such as combination therapy and drug-loaded nanoparticles, the complexity and variability of drug resistance mechanism still inevitably lead to the continuous occurrence of drug resistance. Therefore, with the increasing amounts of anti-breast cancer agents, there are now unprecedented opportunities to understand and overcome drug resistance through further research into mechanisms and corresponding strategies, which will help achieve lasting disease control and bring survival benefits to patients with advanced cancer. Papers of interest: The current Research Topic of Frontiers in Pharmacology focuses on publishing Original Research, Review articles and Case Reports focusing on (a) elucidating mechanisms of drug resistance in breast cancer, target mutations, tumor microenvironment, undiscovered genes and signaling pathways; (b) promising drug delivery systems that can enhance the sensitivity of anti- breast cancer agents to various tumors; (c) strategies that can improve patient care during bio-chemotherapeutic treatments; (d) small molecule compounds that are effective against drug-resistant breast tumors (e) biomarkers of chemotherapy resistance in breast cancer patients and (f) in vitro and in vivo models. Guidelines for article of submission: - Authors must stick to the set guidelines for ethical practices by the Frontiers journals. - The main content of the article must have certain innovation and research significance. - The authors should describe the construction method of drug-resistant cell lines when using them for experiments in the article.

agilent high sensitivity kit: From Genes to Species: Novel Insights from Metagenomics Eamonn P. Culligan, Roy D. Sleator, 2016-10-07 The majority of microbes in many environments are considered “as yet uncultured” and were traditionally considered inaccessible for study through the microbiological gold standard of pure culture. The emergence of metagenomic approaches has allowed researchers to access and study these microbes in a culture-independent manner through DNA sequencing and functional expression of metagenomic DNA in a heterologous host. Metagenomics has revealed an extraordinary degree of diversity and novelty, not only among microbial communities themselves, but also within the genomes of these microbes. This Research Topic aims to showcase the utility of metagenomics to gain insights on the microbial and genomic diversity in different environments by revealing the breadth of novelty that was in the past, largely untapped.
