ace.23ag: Nanoindentation Anthony C. Fischer-Cripps, 2013-03-09 Mechanical engineering, an engineering discipline forged and shaped by the needs of the industrial revolution, is once again asked to do its substantial share in the call for industrial renewal. The general call is urgent as we face profound issues of productivity and competitiveness that require engineering solutions. The Mechanical Engineering Series features graduate texts and research mono graphs intended to address the need for information in contemporary areas of mechanical engineering. The series is conceived as a comprehensive one that covers a broad range of concentrations important to mechanical engineering graduate education and re search. We are fortunate to have a distinguished roster of consulting editors on the advisory board, each an expert in one of the areas of concentration. The names of the consulting editors are listed on the facing page of this volume. The areas of concentration are applied mechanics, biomechanics, computational me chanics, dynamic systems and control, energetics, mechanics of materials, proc essing, production systems, thermal science, and tribology.
ace.23ag: Fundamental Aspects of ELECTROCRYSTALLIZATION John O M. Bockris, 2012-12-06 This monograph is an attempt to present in a concise manner those aspects of the electrolytic growth of crystals considered to be of basic mechanistic significance. The accent has been put consistently on the understanding of the physical models of the processes discussed. Out of the extensive amount of information in this field, the authors have tried to abstract those systems which can be considered central, and which can, therefore, be related to the basic concepts connected with the electrodeposition of metals. In particular, stress has been laid upon consideration of atomic movements -of ions and molecules in solution, of adsorbed substances on the surface of metals, of steps on a growing crystal. Although the main stress is upon the physical picture, a number of derivations have been presented in detail. It is assumed that the reader is familiar to some degree with the concepts of electrodics; in particular, frequent reference is made to models of the electrical double layer at the metal solution interface and the transfer of charged species across it.
ace.23ag: Integrated Energy Systems for Multigeneration Ibrahim Dincer, Dr. Yusuf Bicer, 2019-09-13 Integrated Energy Systems for Multigeneration looks at how measures implemented to limit greenhouse gas emissions must consider smart utilization of available limited resources and employ renewable resources through integrated energy systems and the utilization of waste energy streams. This reference considers the main concepts of thermal and conventional energy systems through detailed systems description, analyses of methodologies, performance assessment and optimization, and illustrative examples and case studies. The book examines producing power and heat with cooling, freshwater, green fuels and other useful commodities designed to tackle rising greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. With worldwide energy demand increasing, and the consequences of meeting supply with current dependency on fossil fuels, investigating and developing sustainable alternatives to the conventional energy systems is a growing concern for global stakeholders. - Analyzes the links between clean energy technologies and achieving sustainable development - Illustrates several examples of design and analysis of integrated energy systems - Discusses performance assessment and optimization - Uses illustrative examples and global case studies to explain methodologies and concepts
ace.23ag: Natural Language Processing and Text Mining Anne Kao, Steve R. Poteet, 2007-03-06 The topic this book addresses originated from a panel discussion at the 2004 ACM SIGKDD (Special Interest Group on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining) Conference held in Seattle, Washington, USA. We the editors or- nized the panel to promote discussion on how text mining and natural l- guageprocessing, tworelatedtopicsoriginatingfromverydi?erentdisciplines, can best interact with each other, and bene?t from each other’s strengths. It attracted a great deal of interest and was attended by 200 people from all over the world. We then guest-edited a special issue of ACM SIGKDD Exp- rations on the same topic, with a number of very interesting papers. At the same time, Springer believed this to be a topic of wide interest and expressed an interest in seeing a book published. After a year of work, we have put - gether 11 papers from international researchers on a range of techniques and applications. We hope this book includes papers readers do not normally ?nd in c- ference proceedings, which tend to focus more on theoretical or algorithmic breakthroughs but are often only tried on standard test data. We would like to provide readers with a wider range of applications, give some examples of the practical application of algorithms on real-world problems, as well as share a number of useful techniques.

ace.23ag: Residue Currents and Bezout Identities C.A. Berenstein, R. Gay, A. Vidras, A. Yger, 2012-12-06 A very primitive form of this monograph has existed for about two and a half years in the form of handwritten notes of a course that Alain Y ger gave at the University of Maryland. The objective, all along, has been to present a coherent picture of the almost mysterious role that analytic methods and, in particular, multidimensional residues, have recently played in obtaining effective estimates for problems in commutative algebra [71;5]* Our original interest in the subject rested on the fact that the study of many questions in harmonic analysis, like finding all distribution solutions (or finding out whether there are any) to a system of linear partial differential equa tions with constant coefficients (or, more generally, convolution equations) in ]R. n, can be translated into interpolation problems in spaces of entire functions with growth conditions. This idea, which one can trace back to Euler, is the basis of Ehrenpreis's Fundamental Principle for partial differential equations [37;5], [56;5], and has been explicitly stated, for convolution equations, in the work of Berenstein and Taylor [9;5] (we refer to the survey [8;5] for complete references. ) One important point in [9;5] was the use of the Jacobi interpo lation formula, but otherwise, the representation of solutions obtained in that paper were not explicit because of the use of a-methods to prove interpolation results.

ace.23ag: The End of Animal Farming Jacy Reese, 2018-11-06 A bold yet realistic vision of how technology and social change are creating a food system in which we no longer use animals to produce meat, dairy, or eggs. Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma and Jonathan Safran Foer’s Eating Animals brought widespread attention to the disturbing realities of factory farming. The End of Animal Farming pushes this conversation forward by outlining a strategic roadmap to a humane, ethical, and efficient food system in which slaughterhouses are obsolete—where the tastes of even the most die-hard meat eater are satisfied by innovative food technologies like cultured meats and plant-based protein. Social scientist and animal advocate Jacy Reese analyzes the social forces leading us toward the downfall of animal agriculture, the technology making this change possible for the meat-hungry public, and the activism driving consumer demand for plant-based and cultured foods. Reese contextualizes the issue of factory farming—the inhumane system of industrial farming that 95 percent of farmed animals endure—as part of humanity’s expanding moral circle. Humanity increasingly treats nonhuman animals, from household pets to orca whales, with respect and kindness, and Reese argues that farmed animals are the next step. Reese applies an analytical lens of “effective altruism,” the burgeoning philosophy of using evidence-based research to maximize one’s positive impact in the world, in order to better understand which strategies can help expand the moral circle now and in the future. The End of Animal Farming is not a scolding treatise or a prescription for an ascetic diet. Reese invites readers—vegan and non-vegan—to consider one of the most important and transformational social movements of the coming decades.

ace.23ag: Visual Data Mining Simeon Simoff, Michael H. Böhlen, Arturas Mazeika, 2008-07-23 Visual Data Mining—Opening the Black Box Knowledge discovery holds the promise of insight into large, otherwise opaque datasets. Thenatureofwhatmakesaruleinterestingtoauserhasbeendiscussed 1 widely but most agree that it is a subjective quality based on the practical u- fulness of the information. Being subjective, the user needs to provide feedback to the system and, as is the case for all systems, the sooner the feedback is given the quicker it can in?uence the behavior of the system. There have been some impressive research activities over the past few years but the question to be asked is why is visual data mining only now being - vestigated commercially? Certainly, there have been arguments for visual data 2 mining for a number of years – Ankerst and others argued in 2002 that current (autonomous and opaque) analysis techniques are ine?cient, as they fail to - rectly embed the user in dataset exploration and that a better solution involves the user and algorithm being more tightly coupled. Grinstein stated that the “current state of the art data mining tools are automated, but the perfect data mining tool is interactive and highly participatory,” while Han has suggested that the “data selection and viewing of mining results should be fully inter- tive, the mining process should be more interactive than the current state of the 2 art and embedded applications should be fairly automated . ” A good survey on 3 techniques until 2003 was published by de Oliveira and Levkowitz .

ace.23ag: Aging, Nutrition and Taste Jacqueline B. Marcus, 2019-04-15 Approximately 380 million people worldwide are 60 years of age or older. This number is predicted to triple to more than 1 billion by 2025. Aging, Nutrition and Taste: Nutrition, Food Science and Culinary Perspectives for Aging Tastefully provides research, facts, theories, practical advice and recipes with full color photographs to feed the rapidly growing aging population healthfully. This book takes an integrated approach, utilizing nutrition, food science and the culinary arts. A significant number of aging adults may have taste and smell or chemosensory disorders and many may also be considered to be undernourished. While this can be partially attributed to the behavioral, physical and social changes that come with aging, the loss or decline in taste and smell may be at the root of other disorders. Aging adults may not know that these disorders exist nor what can be done to compensate. This text seeks to fill the knowledge gap. Aging, Nutrition and Taste: Nutrition, Food Science and Culinary Perspectives for Aging Tastefully examines aging from three perspectives: nutritional changes that affect health and well-being; food science applications that address age-specific chemosensory changes, compromised disease states and health, and culinary arts techniques that help make food more appealing to diminishing senses. Beyond scientific theory, readers will find practical tips and techniques, products, recipes, and menus to increase the desirability, consumption and gratification of healthy foods and beverages as people age. - Presents information on new research and theories including a fresh look at calcium, cholesterol, fibers, omega-3 fatty acids, higher protein requirements, vitamins C, E, D, trace minerals and phytonutrients and others specifically for the aging population - Includes easy to access and usable definitions in each chapter, guidelines, recommendations, tables and usable bytes of information for health professionals, those who work with aging populations and aging people themselves - Synthesizes overall insights in overviews, introductions and digest summaries of each chapter, identifying relevant material from other chapters and clarifying their pertinence
