al albani: Salafism in Lebanon Robert Rabil, 2014-10-24 Salafism, comprised of fundamentalist Islamic movements whose adherents consider themselves the only “saved” sect of Islam, has been little studied, remains shrouded in misconceptions, and has provoked new interest as Salafists have recently staked a claim to power in some Arab states while spearheading battles against “infidel” Arab regimes during recent rebellions in the Arab world. Robert G. Rabil examines the emergence and development of Salafism into a prominent religious movement in Lebanon, including the ideological and sociopolitical foundation that led to the three different schools of Salafism in Lebanon: quietist Salafists, Haraki (active) Salafists; and Salafi Jihadists. Emphasizing their manhaj (methodology) toward politics, the author surveys Salafists’ ideological transformation from opponents to supporters of political engagement. Their antagonism to Hezbollah, which they denounce as the party of Satan, has risen exponentially following the party’s seizure of Beirut in 2008 and support of the tyrannical Syrian regime. Salafism in Lebanon also demonstrates how activists and jihadi Salafists, in response to the political weakness of Sunni leadership, have threatened regional and international security by endorsing violence and jihad. Drawing on field research trips, personal interviews, and Arabic primary sources, the book explores the relationship between the ideologies of the various schools of Salafism and their praxis in relation to Lebanese politics. The book should interest students and scholars of Islamic movements, international affairs, politics and religion, and radical groups and terrorism. |

al albani: Rethinking Salafism Raihan Ismail, 2021-10-01 Salafism has received scrutiny as the one of the main ideological sources for extremist violence perpetrated by jihadi groups. There is a significant corpus of literature discussing transnational jihadi networks, especially after the 9/11 attacks in the United States. These discussions include the radicalization of Salafi thought by jihadi theoreticians and 'ulama. However, Salafism is not monolithic. It contains numerous streams, and an examination of these streams is crucial to understanding its influence on Muslim societies. Besides Salafi jihadis—those who sanction violence—there are two other broad trends in Salafism: quietist and activist. Quietist Salafis endorse an apolitical tradition and find political activism in any form unacceptable. Activist Salafis advocate peaceful political change. Each stream is led by 'ulama, seen as the preservers of Salafi traditions. The quietist and activist 'ulama are active participants in their communities. Studies of such clerics have tended to be country-specific, focusing on the influence and nature of Salafism and its dynamics in those countries. The annexation of the eastern part of Mandate Palestine or the West Bank in the wake of the 1948 War transformed the Jordanian demography and sowed the seeds of an uneasy relationship with the Palestinian component of its population, citizens, residents and refugees. Though better natural resources and stronger leaders have not ensured political stability in many Arab and non-Arab countries, Jordan has been an exception. Indeed, since its formation as an Emirate by the British in 1921, the Kingdom has seen only four rulers, a testimony to the sagacity and political foresight of the Hashemites. The Hashemites have managed to sustain the semi-rentier model primarily through international aid and assistance, which in turn inhibits Jordan from pursuing rapid political and economic reforms. Though a liberal, multi-religious and multicultural society, Jordan has been hampered by social cleavages especially between the tribal population and the forces of modernization. |

al albani: 1000 Qudsi Hadiths: An Encyclopedia of Divine Sayings Arabic Virtual Translation Center, 2012-01-23 Next to the Qur'an, Islam’s holiest text is qudsi hadith. Based on this premise, Islamic scholars have always been fascinated with the collection and study of this type of hadith. The first scholar to have an exclusive collection of qudsi hadiths was Zahir-Bin-Tahir Abu-Al-Qasim Al-Shahhami in the twelfth century. Then came Abu-Al-Hasan Al-Lakhmi who collected forty qudsi hadiths in a book titled Al-Arba`in Al-Ilahiyyah (Forty Divine Hadiths). And then came Al-Nawawi, Ibn-Arabi, Al-Munawi, and Al-Madani who collected 99, 101, 278, and 863 qudsi hadiths respectively. When we set out to produce a book of qudsi hadith in English, our goal was very clear: to produce a book that has every qudsi hadith ever reported. We collected 1230 qudsi hadiths in a book we titled 1000 Qudsi Hadiths: An Encyclopedia of Divine Sayings. 1000 Qudsi Hadiths is not only the biggest collection of qudsi hadiths in English, it is the biggest collection of qudsi hadiths ever put together in any language including Arabic. It contains all the qudsi hadiths reported by major hadith reporters such as Al-Bukhari and Muslim as well as all the qudsi hadiths reported by auxiliary hadith reporters such as Al-Tabarani, Al-Bayhaqi, Al-Hakim Al-Naysaburi, Ibn-Hibban, Ibn-Khuzaymah, Al-Daylami, Ibn-Hajar, Al-Suyuti, Al-Muttaqi Al-Hindi, Al-Mundhiri, Al-Haythami, and Ibn-Kathir. The book derives its content from the biggest 216 hadith books ever written. What makes this encyclopedia so unique is not just the overwhelming number of qudsi hadiths it contains, but the fact that each qudsi hadith is listed with full sanad, source, and rating from sahih to mawdu`. Furthermore, each qudsi hadith is clearly stated and explained with more than 1300 footnotes. al albani: Status and Preservation of Hadith: Answering the contentions of orientalists, Christian missionaries and modernists on Hadith Syed Nooruzuha Barmaver, 2021-05-25 Muslims believe hadith to be an authority and explanation of the Quran. The task of preserving hadith was taken by Allah himself by means of the Sahabah, the Tabieen and then from generation to generation through unique discipline of hadith sciences. The Sahabah understood that the Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) was the final messenger sent for mankind and that the task of preserving his teachings would fall upon their shoulders. Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) instructed them to spread his teachings to those who were absent. They used to give great concern to sitting with the Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) to hear aḥadith from him as much as possible. They would tell each other what they had learnt from the Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم). The Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) also warned them in strong words about narrating anything from him which is not authentic. At the same time, Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) had also warned, that it is a major sin to hide knowledge, whenever it is asked for. Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) did not restrict himself to giving sermons, he ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) also guided the Sahabah practically. Whenever they learnt anything from the Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) they spared no effort to bring it into practice. A Large number of the Sahabah wrote down ahadith and compiled Sahifas (booklets) after hearing them from the Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم). A number of young companions devoted themselves to attaining knowledge and then passed it down to the following generations. Tabieen followed the example of Sahabah in preserving ahadith, for example, Urwah bin Zubair (nephew of Aisha), Nafi Mawla of Abdullah bin Umar and Thabit bin Aslam al-Bunani spent forty years with Anas bin Malik. Also, Amra bint Abdirrahman grew up with Aisha learning ahadith. Like the Sahabah, the Tabieen also collected and compiled ahadith in booklets which were incorporated in books by the next generation and most of those that survive today are in that form as part of other larger books like Musnad Ahmad, Saheeh al-Bukhari, Saheeh Muslim, four Sunan and so on. Scholars of ḥadith from the time of the Tabieen developed the science of al-Jarḥ wa Tadeel. This is the science of examining the narrations of different narrators to make a determination about their trustworthiness and thus authenticity of their narrations. |

One of these was the ethical treatment of disabilities and the disabled, and of handicaps and the handicapped. Since responses to burning medical dilemmas within the wide field of medical ethics was the main focus of that book, it addressed ethical aspects of the doct- patient relationship, and contemporary Islamic debates on issues such as birth control and abortion, artificial insemination, organ transplants, postmortem exa- nations and euthanasia. The main source material was 20th-century fatwas (legal responses) issued by various Middle Eastern muftis. In this book I now wish to survey attitudes to the disabled and their disabilities as evinced by selected Sunni and Shi‘i legal compilations throughout 1400 years of scholarly Islamic activity, but also through contemporary fatwas. The sources used for this book are a selection ofmedieval as well as modern legal writings, medical books and articles in Arabic, books and articles on medicine from an Islamic religious point of view, Prophetic medicine, and the Qur’an and medicine. I have scrutinized all these for their consideration of people with disabilities, and for the behavioral or social adjustments these people were offered, mainly through legal rulings. |
