114th aviation company vietnam: Knights Over the Delta Steve Stibbens, 2002-01-01 This is the story of that long, bloody war in Vietnams Mekong Delta, told by a small band of daunting young soldiers who saw it all in nine years of combat out of Vinh Long airfield, south of Saigon. |
114th aviation company vietnam: Rice and Cotton John B. Givhan, 2000 The innocence lost - never to be regained - by America's youth during the Vietnam War lies strewn across America's landscape in the form of shattered lives and minds. We were sent there by U.S. government officials who played recklessly with our young lives; however, we did not know to what extent at the time. Maybe we still don't. But, we do know that for them, our so-called leaders, politics came first, and our welfare - our very lives - came second. We also know that very little was reported about that war during the period November 22, 1963, to August 5, 1964. John B. Givhan was there during that time, and he details early helicopter assault missions flown by courageous U.S. Army helicopter pilots, crew chiefs and gunners - their living and their dying. This is also about April 12, 1964, in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam, a day that is and will be forever etched in the minds and souls of the men of the 120th Aviation Company, the Deans, when valor and devotion to duty reigned supreme - and whose innocence was lost! |
114th aviation company vietnam: From Bootcamp to Vietnam Darlene Neubauer, 2013-05-31 This is a true story that will enlighten you on the intense fighting that went on in Vietnam. My brother wrote to me every time he got some time off from going up in his helicopter and fighting for hours at a time. He had trouble finding time to get enough sleep. I was grateful for all the letters that he wrote to me while there. I tried to get him to come home and not re-enlist like he did. He wanted to stay with his group and fight to the end, not knowing how long it would really take to end this cold war. They called it a cold war, but after reading all of Jerrys letters, I would call it a hot war. It lasted 20 years and we lost 58,267 service men. What a horrible price we had to pay for that war. I could never have the words enough to express my thanks for all these men who gave their lives for our country and for those that died in wars around the world. |
114th aviation company vietnam: Vietnam Báo Chí Marc Phillip Yablonka, 2018-12-01 A military journalist shines a light on the unsung heroism and contributions of enlisted combat reporters in the Vietnam War in these revealing interviews. Vietnam Bao Chi brings together interviews with thirty-five combat correspondents who reported on the Vietnam War. These brave men and women wrote the stories, captured the images, and filmed the television coverage of their fellow servicepeople on battlefields from the Mekong Delta to the DMZ and from the Tet Offensive in 1968 to the fall of Saigon in 1975. Here you will meet Marine Dale Dye, who would go on to play an integral role in the making of the film Platoon; Green Beret Jim Morris, whose books, including War Story, recount the combat operations of Special Forces units in the Central Highlands; John Del Vecchio, whose classic work of fiction, The 13th Valley, mirrors his own existence as a combat correspondent with the 101st Airborne Division; and US Navy Frogman Chip Maury, renowned for his free-fall and underwater photography in Vietnam. Yablonka’s extensive experience as a military journalist brought him into contact with many of these combat correspondents, giving him a unique insight into their professions and lives. This book honors these brave chroniclers in uniform who brought the Vietnam War home to us. “[This] valuable collection of profiles . . . shines light on the all-but-forgotten role of American military báo chí (press in Vietnamese). —Publishers Weekly |

114th aviation company vietnam: Vietnam Helicopter Crew Member Stories H. D. Graham, 2018-06-21 This book is a collection of fascinating short stories, photos, and documents furnished by the heroic and courageous men that served as air or ground crew members in Vietnam. The chopper units were located throughout Vietnam. During the course of the war, we lost at least 5,139 helicopter aircrew members and at least 588 ground support crew members. In fact, the true number of helicopter air and ground crew members killed or missing in action will probably never be known. Those crew members accounted for a large percentage of all the enemies killed during the war. Those courageous men were American heroes then and will always be American heroes. |

114th aviation company vietnam: Triumphant Warrior Peter D. Shay, 2019-06-18 The true story of Bronze Star recipient Allen Weseleskey and his high-risk rescue mission, carried out under heavy fire in Vietnam. Includes photos. When the going is fast and rough, I will not falter. I will be uncompromising in every blow I strike. I will be humble in victory. I am a United States Navy Flyer. —from “A Navy Flyer’s Creed” Barely a month after the start of the Tet Offensive in 1968, a Navy flyer applied this creed—and dared to risk not only his career but also his and his fellow aircrewmen’s lives in rescuing a wounded US Army advisor only moments from certain battlefield death. The pilot, Lt. Cdr. Allen E. “Wes” Weseleskey, had been assigned to the Navy’s Helicopter Attack (Light) Squadron Three, the “Seawolves,” at the Vinh Long Army Airfield. His controversial mission took place in March 1968 in the Mekong Delta region. Two ARVN companies were being overwhelmed and despite coming under heavy fire, Weseleskey decided to go in and rescue as many survivors as possible. The accompanying Seawolf was forced to turn back after taking hits, but Weseleskey, with the agreement of his crew, persisted—flying so low under the treeline that they were out of reach of the VC rocket launchers. Weseleskey was awarded the Bronze Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Navy Cross during his service. This is his story, from early assignments, clashes with superior officers, missions and rescues during the Tet Offensive, to homecoming. It is the story of a quintessential flyer, an American hero who was prepared to speak his mind and take risks—and of the vital role of the Seawolves in the Vietnam War. |

114th aviation company vietnam: Bug Pilot Cindy Utter, Author,, LTC Lewis Hudspeth, U.S. Army, Retired, 2024-05-15 The Vietnam War comes alive in this real-life story of a young, small-town American boy who quickly became a man with a purpose as a helicopter pilot who survived the ravages of war, made instant life-and-death decisions, earned a Purple Heart for combat wounds, and changed his life forever. Life was different in the 1960s for teenage boys facing life decisions as a youth. Young men got married, left home at eighteen or younger, started families, went to war, and many died before reaching age twenty-five. In fact, many U.S. Army helicopter pilots did not survive the war as they served in one of the most dangerous and deadly jobs in the Vietnam War. Facing war was horrific--but learning to fly, making lifetime buddies, and experiencing the Vietnam War as a U.S. Army helicopter pilot was a life-changing adventure for Lew Hudspeth. His one-year tour of duty in South Vietnam in 1967 was filled with many elements, including terrifying and thrilling moments with breathless fear; intense sadness for fellow soldiers who did not survive; a strong, patriotic desire to fulfill his military duty to his country; a willingness to make the necessary sacrifices for freedom without complaining; and a powerful feeling of young, invincible strength and courage to overcome all obstacles to achieve the mission, no matter what. This coming of age story is truly inspiring for all of our young warriors--or for those who strive to become one. |

114th aviation company vietnam: Combat Bandsman Robert F. Fischer, 2016-10-07 Playing trumpet in the 9th Infantry Division Band should have been a safe assignment but the Viet Cong swarmed throughout the Mekong Delta, and safety was nonexistent. The band's twofold mission--boosting morale and helping win the hearts and minds of the Vietnamese--required them to leave their Đồng Tam (a.k.a. Mortar City) base camp and travel through a vast area of rice paddies, dense jungle and numerous villages. By 1969, home-front support for the war had dwindled and the U.S. Army in Vietnam was on the brink of mutiny. No one wanted to die under the command of career-minded officers in a war lost to misguided politics. This memoir of a conscripted musician in Vietnam provides a personal account of the lunacy surrounding combat support service in the 9th Infantry Division during the months prior to its withdrawal. |

114th aviation company vietnam: Vietnam Airmobile Warfare Tactics Gordon L. Rottman, 2012-10-20 A Vietnam veteran explains the composition, capabilities, equipment and missions of the US Army and Marine Corps helicopter and airmobile units in the Vietnam war - and exactly how they carried out their missions. This compact, yet detailed volume centers on the classic airmobile assault mission: how it was planned and prepared; how the troop-carrying “slicks” and their “gunship” escorts and support teams actually operated; and the opposition and hazards that they faced on the LZ. The text is illustrated with wartime photos, organization charts, and color plates showing both the machines and the tactics that where employed. |

114th aviation company vietnam: US Army AH-1 Cobra Units in Vietnam Jonathan Bernstein, 2012-11-20 An illustrated combat history of Bell's AH-1 Cobra, the first dedicated helicopter gunship to reach frontline service anywhere in the world. Developed as a private venture by the manufacturer, and based on the mechanics of the ubiquitous UH-1 Huey, the Cobra proved a huge success once introduced into combat with the US Army in 1966. Built as a key weapon in the Advanced Aerial Fire Support System concept of 1965, the AH-1 was one of the few aircraft to reach the combat zone after actual combat experience went into its design. The AH-1 helped reduce the losses being suffered by vulnerable troop transport helicopters by providing effective fire suppression during airmobile operations. This book explores its history, technology and crew. |
