This is a daunting task because abiotic and biotic stresses are threatening the growth, survival and productivity of legumes. For instance, the productivity of legumes is documented to be reduced by 14-88% by abiotic stresses. The co-occurrence of abiotic and biotic stresses under field conditions leads to interactive stress types, thus yielding positive or negative outcomes. Legumes react using antioxidant defense, osmoregulatory adjustments, hormonal regulations and molecular mechanisms to tolerate stress. Hence, improving legume productivity requires knowledge on the sensitivity, mechanisms and approaches of stress tolerance in legumes, in order to design new crops and alternative management systems. This book presents advances on bioactive compounds, applications, effect of various stresses and biotechnology-based stress tolerance mechanisms of legumes. In an effort to develop and discover better therapies against cancer, investigators all over the world have increased our knowledge of cell biology, biochemistry, and molecular biology. The goal has been to define therapeuti cally exploitable differences between normal and malignant cells. The result has been an increased understanding of cellular and whole-organism biology and an increased respect for the flexibility and resiliency ofbiologically systems. Thus, as some new therapeutic targets have been defined and new therapeutic strategies have been attempted, so have some new biological hurdles resulting from tumor evasion of the intended therapeutic attack been discovered. Historically, anticancer drugs have originated from all available chemical sources. Synthetic molecules from the chemical industry, especially dyestuffs and warfare agents, and natural products from plants, microbes, and fungi have all been potential sources of pharmaceuticals, including anticancer agents. There is no shortage of molecules; the challenge has been and continues to be methods of identifying molecules that have the potential to be therapeutically important in human malignant disease. Screening remains the most important and most controversial method in cancer drug discovery. In vitro screens have generally focused on cytotoxicity and have identified several highly cytotoxic molecules. Other endpoints available in vitro are inhibition of proliferation, 3 inhibition of [ H]thymidine incorporation into DNA and various viability assays, based most frequently on dye exclusion or metabolism. |

In addition, the Institute of Fluorescence (http://theinstituteoffluorescence.com/) mailed 100’s of copies of the 2008 volume to contributors around the world. This new 2009 volume features some 419 entries from no fewer than 41 countries worldwide, as compared to 418 entries (38 different countries) in 2008 and 405 entries in the 2007 volume, respectively. We have received 29 new entries this year, and deleted 25 entries that were not updated by contributors from past years. In 2008, 129 AIM numbers were submitted as compared to 106 in 2007. This year the number has risen again to 136 AIM numbers submitted. This year we also see the introduction of the h-index number listing, a publication statistic provided by the Thompson’s ISI Web of Science. Some 42 contributors provided their h-numbers. In 2009 we also see a continued and strong company support, in light of the current world economic climate, which will enable us to further disseminate the volume in 2009– 2010. In this regard we especially thank the instrumentation companies for their continued support, where without their financial contributions, it is likely that the volume would not be the success it is today. |
