At this initial stage, the comic was almost entirely about Sonichu and Rosechu, although bits of Chris's life still managed to find their way in.The hand-drawn premiere issue is a special zero issue. In the comics industry, zero issues are used as either a sales-enhancing gimmick (Image Comics is a notable user of this) or a special preview of work that will not truly begin until issue #1. Given that it previews nothing, which one Chris was going for is probably the former, though given that it's not legally able to be sold, it fails even that.The comic consists of Sonichu's first three adventures. In Sonichu's Origin, the core cast of the series is introduced as Sonichu and Rosechu are created. Then, in Genesis of the Lovehogs, the two protagonists meet and immediately fall in love. Finally, in Sonichu vs. Naitsirhc, our yellow hero does battle with his first real villain, who but foreshadows the challenges awaiting the hedgehogs in the following issue. 2016 van gogh sketchbook: 반 고흐의 마지막 70일 마틴 베일리, 2023-04-20 “나는 밭을 갈 듯 캔버스를 쟁기질한다” 반 고흐 예술의 정점으로 불리는 프랑스에서의 3년, 그 치열했던 삶의 종착지 오베르에서의 마지막 70일, 70점의 그림 평생 한곳에 정착하지 못하고 자신의 예술을 더 높은 경지로 끌어올릴 곳을 찾아 이리저리 옮겨다니는 삶을 살았던 빈센트 반 고흐. 그런 그가 마지막으로 영원한 안식을 취한 곳이 오베르쉬르우아즈(Auvers-sur-Oise)이다. 파리에서 북서쪽으로 30킬로미터 떨어진 이 작은 마을은 반 고흐가 생레미드프로방스 외곽 수도원 요양 시설을 떠나 회복될 수 있다는 낙관적 희망을 품고 찾아간 곳이다. 숲이 우거진 경사지 바로 아래 자리한 이곳에서 예술가는 자신의 고향과 닮은 소박한 마을 정취에 심취해 대형 캔버스에 아름다운 풍경을 옮기는 예술적 시도를 했고, 폴 가셰 박사와의 우정을 쌓았다. 한여름 쏟아지는 햇살만큼 뜨거웠던 반 고흐의 오베르에서의 70일을 되짚어본다는 것은 그의 삶과 작품에 대한 깊은 통찰을 얻을 수 있는 시간이 될 터이다. 아를―생폴드모졸―오베르로 이어지는 반 고흐 예술의 가장 중요한 시기로 꼽히는 프랑스에서의 3년을 기록한 반 고흐 전문가 마틴 베일리의 “ART+Place” 대장정의 마지막을 장식하는 『반 고흐의 마지막 70일』은 이전 책을 뛰어넘는 철저한 자료조사와 현장답사를 통해 지금껏 어디에서도 공개된 적 없는 문헌과 풍부한 시각자료를 선사한다. 또한 반 고흐 사후 그의 작품이 명성을 얻어가는 과정을 세세하게 기록하고 있어 반 고흐의 작품이 어떻게 우리 곁으로 오게 되었는지 그 과정을 따라가는 것만으로도 예술가에 대한 새롭고 놀라운 사실을 알게 될 것이다. 고립된 생활 청산, 새로운 희망에 대한 기대 1890년 5월 16일, 빈센트 반 고흐는 담장으로 둘러싸인 생폴드모졸 요양원을 나와 파리행 기차에 몸을 실었다. 바깥세상과는 1년 만의 조우였다. 밤 기차를 타고 파리로 향하는 동안 빈센트는 무슨 생각을 했을까? 당장은 몇 시간 후 만나게 될 테오와 그의 가족을 떠올리며 기쁨과 설렘이 공존했을 것이다. 그럼에도 요양원에서 고립된 생활을 막 마치고 나온 터라 다소 두렵기도 했으리라. 하지만 걱정과 달리 요하나는 빈센트의 첫인상을 다음과 같이 기록했다. “아픈 사람을 예상했으나 그는 건강하고 넓은 어깨, 미소를 띤 혈색 좋은 얼굴의 남자였다. 아주 확고해 보이는 모습이었다.” 빈센트가 요양원을 퇴원하던 날 담당 의사였던 페롱 박사는 소견서 말미에 “치료되었다”라고 썼다. 이에 대해 연구자들 사이에서는 페롱 박사가 지나치게 낙관적인 관점으로 빈센트의 완치를 판정했다고 추정하고는 하지만 요양원 기록을 보면 이 카테고리에 들어간 환자는 거의 없었다. 그런 점을 감안하면 빈센트의 상태는 1년 전에 비해 상당히 회복되었던 것으로 보인다. 5월 17일 이른 아침 파리에 도착한 빈센트는 자신을 마중 나온 동생 테오와 약 2년여 만에 재회한다. 반 고흐 형제는 애틋함과 안도감이 교차하는 마음으로 함께 집으로 돌아왔고, 빈센트는 처음으로 테오의 아내, 생후 3개월 된 조카와 만났으며, 아파트 벽을 가득 채운 자신의 그림을 살펴보았다. 이후 반 고흐 형제는 국립미술협회 전시, 일본 판화 전시, 그리고 아방가르드미술 수집가이자 딜러인 쥘리앵 탕기의 상점에 차례로 들러 변화하는 미술의 기운을 흡수했다. 과연 고립된 생활을 벗어나 새로운 희망을 기대하기에 더할 나위 없는 시간이었으리라. 오베르에서의 마지막 시간, 그리고 높아가는 예술가의 명성 책은 이처럼 요양원을 나와 독립적인 생활에 대한 기대와 도전을 준비하는 빈센트의 새로운 출발로 시작한다. 총 3부로 이루어진 구성에서 가장 긴 부분을 차지하는 1부 「마지막 70일, 70점의 그림」에서는 빈센트가 오베르에서 보낸 10주라는 시간과 놀라운 성과에 대해 다룬다. 특히 의사이자 아마추어 미술가였던 폴 가셰 박사와의 만남이 빈센트에게 미친 정신적·예술적 영향을 비롯해 대형 풍경화 및 초상화에 집중하는 예술가의 도전적 면면을 깊이 있게 살펴본다. 2부 「종말」에서는 빈센트의 죽음을 둘러싼 사건에 집중한다. 한때 불거졌던 빈센트의 죽음에 관한 논쟁을 포함해, 그럼에도 왜 여러 연구자들이 빈센트의 죽음을 자살로 보는지 반 고흐의 병력 및 여러 자료를 근거로 살핀다. 또 형의 죽음 이후 너무나도 빨리 빈센트를 따라간 동생 테오의 죽음에 대해서도 자세히 다루고 있다. 빈센트가 사망한 후 약 3개월이 지났을 무렵 매독이 원인인 마비성 치매 진단을 받은 테오는 그로부터 12주 만에 형의 뒤를 따르고 만다. 대부분의 반 고흐 관련 문헌에서는 대체로 빈센트의 질병과 죽음에 초점을 맞추는 경향이 있었으나 마틴 베일리는 연구 과정에서 찾은 반 고흐 가족의 질병 이력을 비롯해 테오의 건강 상태를 빈센트도 알고 있었는지, 이것이 빈센트의 고뇌의 원인 중 하나가 되었을지에 대해서도 추론한다. 3부 「명예와 부」에서는 결혼 2년 만에 홀로 남겨진 테오의 아내 요하나 봉어르가 빈센트의 모든 작품을 관리하게 되면서 작품목록을 어떻게 정리하고, 반 고흐의 삶과 예술을 세상에 어떻게 알리는지, 예술가의 탄생에 쏟은 노력 등을 세세하게 다룬다. 미국의 미술사가 존 리월드의 말처럼 반 고흐가 명성을 얻어가는 과정은 “현대미술사에서 가장 감동적이고 놀라운 장 중 하나”라고 일컬어질 만큼 극적인 장관을 이룬다. 생전에 작품을 단 한 점밖에 판매하지 못했던 반 고흐가 사후 미술계에 미친 유례없는 영향과 작품 가격의 상승, 그에 따른 수많은 위작의 제작 및 거래 등 이제 시대를 초월해 세계에서 가장 유명한 화가가 된 반 고흐를 둘러싼 흥미로운 이야기가 전개된다. 반 고흐의 ‘진짜’ 마지막 그림 미술 애호가들은 종종 위대한 화가의 마지막 그림이 무엇인지 몹시 궁금해한다. 빈센트의 경우, 마지막 그림을 확인하고 분석할 수 있다면 그의 삶, 마지막 순간의 마음 상태를 통찰할 수 있으리라는 희망에 더욱 매혹적으로 다가오는지도 모른다. 그렇다면 그의 진짜 ‘마지막’ 그림은 무엇일까? _149쪽 반 고흐의 마지막 작품으로 가장 많이 언급되는 그림은 「까마귀 나는 밀밭」이다. 무겁게 내려앉은 하늘과 밀밭 위를 나는 검은 새떼가 그림에 불길한 기운을 드리우고 있어 상징적 관점에서 파국을 의미한다는 해석이 많았다. 「까마귀 나는 밀밭」이 실제로 반 고흐의 내적 고뇌를 반영하고 있을지도 모르나 마지막 작품이 아닌 것은 분명하다는 주장도 팽팽하게 맞선다. 반 고흐 사후 열린 몇몇 전시에서 ‘거장의 마지막 작품’이라 소개한 것을 시작으로, 어빙 스톤의 1934년 소설 『빈센트 반 고흐—열정의 삶』과 이를 각색해 영화화 한 「열정의 랩소디」에서 결정적 장면에 그림을 그리는 화가와 까마귀를 묘사함으로써 「까마귀 나는 밀밭」이 반 고흐의 마지막 작품이라는 인식에 지대한 영향을 끼쳤다. 하지만 그림을 자세히 보면 곡식은 아직 추수되기 전이고, 반 고흐의 편지를 참고할 때 이 그림은 그가 7월 6일의 힘들었던 파리 방문 직후 완성한 ‘소용돌이치는 하늘’ 아래 밀밭 풍경을 그린 그림 중 하나일 가능성이 크다고 저자는 말한다. 마지막 작품으로 좀더 가능성 있는 후보로는 「오베르 인근 농장」과 「나무뿌리」를 들 수 있다. 이는 반 고흐의 유작을 관리하고 작품목록을 정리한 테오의 아내 요하나와 처남 안드리스가 남긴 자료를 근거 삼는데, 훗날 안드리스는 좀더 구체적인 설명을 덧붙이며 총기 사건이 일어난 날 아침에 그린 것은 「나무뿌리」라고 주장한다. 두 그림 중 어느 것이 ‘진짜’ 마지막 그림일까? 이에 대한 연구는 앞으로도 계속되겠지만, 분명한 것은 예술가가 떠난 지 130여 년이 지난 오늘날에도 우리가 반 고흐에 대해 여전히 알아갈 것이 남아 있음을 시사한다. 예술가의 발자취를 찾아서 떠나는 여행 오베르쉬르우아즈는 파리에서 기차로 약 한 시간 정도 떨어진 곳에 위치한다. 놀랍게도 시골 역사는 반 고흐 시절 이후 거의 변하지 않았고, 역에서 중심가를 따라 5분 정도 걸으면 반 고흐가 머물렀던 여인숙 오베르주라부가 나온다. 1987년 도미니크샤를 얀센이 여인숙 건물을 구입한 후 세심하게 복원하여 일반에게 개방한 것이 1993년. 이후 해마다 5만 명 이상의 관람객이 이곳, 예술가의 마지막 안식처를 찾아와 네덜란드 암스테르담의 반고흐미술관 다음으로 많은 관람객이 찾는 ‘반 고흐 순례지’가 되었다. 2023년은 반고흐미술관이 개관 50주년을 맞이하는 해이다. 이를 기념하기 위해 미술관은 첫 전시로 <빈센트를 선택하다, 가족사의 초상(Choosing Vincent. Portrait of a Family History)>을 개최했다. 전 세계에서 반 고흐의 작품을 가장 많이 소장하고 있는 이 미술관이 건립될 수 있었던 데에는 반 고흐라는 예술가가 그림에 전념할 수 있도록 뒷바라지를 한 동생 테오와 반 고흐 형제의 죽음 이후 작품을 알리고 보존하는 일에 평생을 바친 요하나 봉어르, 그리고 그녀의 아들 빈센트 빌럼의 노력이 크다. 이들이 아니었다면, 형 빈센트가 언젠가 베토벤과 비교될 만큼 위대한 예술가로 이름 남기리라 장담한 테오의 예언은 이루어지기 어려웠으리라. 반고흐미술관은 이번 전시에 대해 한 명의 예술가가 탄생하기까지 테오와 그의 가족이 기울인 노력과 결코 쉽지 않았던 선택의 과정을 담고 있다고 밝혔다. 그리고 그들의 이야기는 마틴 베일리의 책 『반 고흐의 마지막 70일』에서도 깊이 있게 다루고 있으니, 예술가의 삶, 커가는 명성과 숨은 조력자들에 대해 탐구하고 싶은 독자에게는 분명 선물과도 같은 책이 될 것이다. |
