5 principles of human performance todd conklin: The 5 Principles of Human Performance: A Contemporary Update of the Building Blocks of Human Performance for the New View of Safety Todd E. Conklin, 2019-01-23 Conklin's book is an interesting and informal discussion with the reader about the 5 Principles of Human Performance principle by principle, chapter by chapter. These 5 theroies about how humans perform in organiations are principles, the building blocks of Human Performance, through which we have established a new way to think about safety and reliability in our worlds. ...and changing the way we think about work is a vital step towards improvement.Work never stops and work is never normal. This idea would scare a mere-mortal manager, but an enlightened leader knows the power of continuous learning and improvement. Work is constantly in motion, therefore learning must continue. Work is never the same, therefore we never really know how work is being done. If we don't know how we perform work how will we know how we can improve? The 5 Principles of Human Performance are, in a sense, a repository of the central values of Human Performance. Keeping these principles at the core of our thinking, training, and practices will allow the basic building blocks of this philosophy to help organizational programs reduce the normal philosophical drift that is present and predictable in all safety programs. Having these espoused principles keeps us all honest and keeps our Human Performance effort on track and successful.

5 principles of human performance todd conklin: Human Error James Reason, 1990-10-26 Human Error, published in 1991, is a major theoretical integration of several previously isolated literatures. Particularly important is the identification of cognitive processes common to a wide variety of error types. Technology has now reached a point where improved safety can only be achieved on the basis of a better understanding of human error mechanisms. In its treatment of major accidents, the book spans the disciplinary gulf between psychological theory and those concerned with maintaining the reliability of hazardous technologies. As such, it is essential reading not only for cognitive scientists and human factors specialists, but also for reliability engineers and risk managers. No existing book speaks with so much clarity to both the theorists and the practitioners of human reliability.
5 principles of human performance todd conklin: Managing the Risks of Organizational Accidents James Reason, 2016-01-29 Major accidents are rare events due to the many barriers, safeguards and defences developed by modern technologies. But they continue to happen with saddening regularity and their human and financial consequences are all too often unacceptably catastrophic. One of the greatest challenges we face is to develop more effective ways of both understanding and limiting their occurrence. This lucid book presents a set of common principles to further our knowledge of the causes of major accidents in a wide variety of high-technology systems. It also describes tools and techniques for managing the risks of such organizational accidents that go beyond those currently available to system managers and safety professionals. James Reason deals comprehensively with the prevention of major accidents arising from human and organizational causes. He argues that the same general principles and management techniques are appropriate for many different domains. These include banks and insurance companies just as much as nuclear power plants, oil exploration and production companies, chemical process installations and air, sea and rail transport. Its unique combination of principles and practicalities make this seminal book essential reading for all whose daily business is to manage, audit and regulate hazardous technologies of all kinds. It is relevant to those concerned with understanding and controlling human and organizational factors and will also interest academic readers and those working in industrial and government agencies.
5 principles of human performance todd conklin: Leading with Safety Thomas R. Krause, 2005-12-30 Building on years of research and experience in the field, Leading with Safety redefines organizational safety as an activity that both leads other performance areas and in turn must be led. Thomas Krause poses the question, What does it take to be a great safety leader? — and answers with a comprehensive new model for understanding safety leadership as it affects organizational culture and safety climate. Leading with Safety defines the practices, tools, and systems essential to creating an injury-free workplace, including the role of employees at each level, special considerations for coaching the senior executive leader, and the two crucial aspects of human performance that every leader needs to know. Ending with inspiring real-world examples or organizations that have put these tools into practice, Leading with Safety is written for any leader who wants to lead with safety toward a more robust, productive and effective organization.
5 principles of human performance todd conklin: eAccess to Justice Karim Benyekhlef, Jane Bailey, Jacquelyn Burkell, Fabien Gélinas, 2016-09-22 Part I of this work focuses on the ways in which digitization projects can affect fundamental justice principles. It examines claims that technology will improve justice system efficiency and offers a model for evaluating e-justice systems that incorporates a broader range of justice system values. The emphasis is on the complicated relationship between privacy and transparency in making court records and decisions available online. Part II examines the implementation of technologies in the justice system and the challenges it comes with, focusing on four different technologies: online court information systems, e-filing, videoconferencing, and tablets for presentation and review of evidence by jurors. The authors share a measuring enthusiasm for technological advances in the courts, emphasizing that these technologies should be implemented with care to ensure the best possible outcome for access to a fair and effective justice system. Finally, Part III adopts the standpoints of sociology, political theory and legal theory to explore the complex web of values, norms, and practices that support our systems of justice, the reasons for their well-established resistance to change, and the avenues and prospects of eAccess. The chapters in this section provide a unique and valuable framework for thinking with the required sophistication about legal change. Published in English.

5 principles of human performance todd conklin: Risk-Based Thinking Tony Muschara, 2017-11-13 Society at large tends to misunderstand what safety is all about. It is not just the absence of harm. When nothing bad happens over a period of time, how do you know you are safe? In reality, safety is what you and your people do moment by moment, day by day to protect assets from harm and to control the hazards inherent in your operations. This is the purpose of risk-based thinking, the key element of the six building blocks of Human and Organizational Performance (H&OP). Generally, H&OP provides a risk-based approach to managing human performance in operations. But, specifically, risk-based thinking enables foresight and flexibility—even when surprised—to do what is necessary to protect assets from harm but also achieve mission success despite ongoing stresses or shocks to the operation. Although you cannot prepare for every adverse scenario, you can be ready for almost anything. When risk-based thinking is integrated into the DNA of an organization’s way of doing business, people will be ready for most unexpected situations. Eventually, safety becomes a core value, not a priority to be negotiated with others depending on circumstances. This book provides a coherent perspective on what executives and line managers within operational environments need to focus on to efficiently and effectively control, learn, and adapt.

5 principles of human performance todd conklin: Just Culture Sidney Dekker, 2018-09-07 A just culture is a culture of trust, learning and accountability. It is particularly important when an incident has occurred; when something has gone wrong. How do you respond to the people involved? What do you do to minimize the negative impact, and maximize learning? This third edition of Sidney Dekker’s extremely successful Just Culture offers new material on restorative justice and ideas about why your people may be breaking rules. Supported by extensive case material, you will learn about safety reporting and honest disclosure, about retributive just culture and about the criminalization of human error. Some suspect a just culture means letting people off the hook. Yet they believe they need to remain able to hold people accountable for undesirable performance. In this new edition, Dekker asks you to look at 'accountability' in different ways. One is by asking which rule was broken, who did it, whether that behavior crossed some line, and what the appropriate consequences should be. In this retributive sense, an 'account' is something you get people to pay, or settle. But who will draw that line? And is the process fair? Another way to approach accountability after an incident is to ask who was hurt. To ask what their needs are. And to explore whose obligation it is to meet those needs. People involved in causing the incident may well want to participate in meeting those needs. In this restorative sense, an 'account' is something you get people to tell, and others to listen to. Learn to look at accountability in different ways and your impact on restoring trust, learning and a sense of humanity in your organization could be enormous.

5 principles of human performance todd conklin: The French Republic Edward G. Berenson, Vincent Duclert, Christophe Prochasson, 2011-10-15 In this invaluable reference work, the world’s foremost authorities on France’s political, social, cultural, and intellectual history explore the history and meaning of the French Republic and the challenges it has faced. Founded in 1792, the French Republic has been defined and redefined by a succession of regimes and institutions, a multiplicity of symbols, and a plurality of meanings, ideas, and values. Although constantly in flux, the Republic has nonetheless produced a set of core ideals and practices fundamental to modern France's political culture and democratic life. Based on the influential Dictionnaire critique de la république, published in France in 2002, The French Republic provides an encyclopedic survey of French republicanism since the Enlightenment. Divided into three sections—Time and History, Principles and Values, and Dilemmas and Debates—The French Republic begins by examining each of France’s five Republics and its two authoritarian interludes, the Second Empire and Vichy. It then offers thematic essays on such topics as Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity; laicity; citizenship; the press; immigration; decolonization; anti-Semitism; gender; the family; cultural policy; and the Muslim headscarf debates. Each essay includes a brief guide to further reading. This volume features updated translations of some of the most important essays from the French edition, as well as twenty-two newly commissioned English-language essays, for a total of forty entries. Taken together, they provide a state-of-the art appraisal of French republicanism and its role in shaping contemporary France’s public and private life.
5 principles of human performance todd conklin: The Strategy-focused Organization Robert S. Kaplan, David P. Norton, 2001 In today's business environment, strategy has never been more important. Yet research shows that most companies fail to execute strategy successfully. Behind this abysmal track record lies an undeniable fact: many companies continue to use management processes-top-down, financially driven, and tactical-that were designed to run yesterday's organizations. Now, the creators of the revolutionary performance management tool called the Balanced Scorecard introduce a new approach that makes strategy a continuous process owned not just by top management, but by everyone. In The Strategy-Focused Organization, Robert Kaplan and David Norton share the results of ten years of learning and research into more than 200 companies that have implemented the Balanced Scorecard. Drawing from more than twenty in-depth case studies-including Mobil, CIGNA, Nova Scotia Power, and AT T Canada-Kaplan and Norton illustrate how Balanced Scorecard adopters have taken their groundbreaking tool to the next level. These organizations have used the scorecard to create an entirely new performance management framework that puts strategy at the center of key management processes and systems. Kaplan and Norton articulate the five key principles required for building Strategy-Focused Organizations: (1) translate the strategy to operational terms, (2) align the organization to the strategy, (3) make strategy everyone's everyday job, (4) make strategy a continual process, and (5) mobilize change through strong, effective leadership. The authors provide a detailed account of how a range of organizations in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors have deployed these principles to achieve breakthrough, sustainable performance improvements. Presenting a practical, proven framework steeped in rich case study experience, The Strategy-Focused Organization helps solve a universal management problem-not just how to formulate strategy, but how to make it work. Building on one of the most revolutionary business ideas of our time, this important book shows how today's leaders can shape their own companies to meet the challenges and reap the rewards of a new competitive era. Robert S. Kaplan is the Marvin Bower Professor of Leadership Development at Harvard Business School. David P. Norton is President of Balanced Scorecard Collaborative, Inc.

5 principles of human performance todd conklin: 6-Hour Safety Culture Tim Autrey, 2015-06-15 How do you get workers to [consistently] do the 'right things' at 3:00AM when no one else is watching? The answer to this question provides the ultimate (yet little understood) solution to rapid and sustainable improvement in safety, reliability, and efficiency. The great news is- it's not complicated. In 6-Hour Safety Culture, Tim Autrey offers tangible insight into how to achieve and sustain next-level performance in any organization. Using stories and anecdotes drawn from his experiences within the US Naval submarine service, nuclear power generation industry, and as Founder/CEO of the Practicing Perfection Institute, Inc., he breaks down the underlying science of human performance into simple understandable 'chunks'. He offers a great deal of 'simplicity on the far side of complexity'. In Part I, you will be enticed to think different as Tim Autrey takes you on a journey of awareness into the world of human performance. Building upon a foundation of four simple precepts, and a four-part 'system' for leveraging positive aspects of human nature, he then takes you into Part II, where you will learn how to truly influence the hearts, minds, and souls of your organization members. Moving from insight, to strategy, to action, Tim will teach you the Individual Performance Model, the same model used by leaders throughout history to influence human behavior and develop high levels of personal accountability. He then takes this model into the third dimension, providing a proven recipe for rapid and sustainable team, department, and organizational culture transformation. In Part III, you will learn to do different as Tim directly explores and develops the tenets of human error, safety culture, and just culture. He breaks through the hype, teaching you what's important (and what to avoid) in any performance improvement effort. He then develops a simple four-step 'recipe' for engaging organization members on an ongoing basis; a method that directly promotes alignment with organization principles and a one team approach to doing business. He ties everything together with the Human Performance Blueprint- a step-by-step implementation guideline for achieving and sustaining next-level performance within any organization. Tim wraps up the 6-Hour Safety Culture journey with a challenge- a challenge to you and everyone else who chooses to learn...and take action. A challenge to make (as Steve Jobs put it) a dent in the universe; to truly help make your organization, and ultimately the world, a better and safer place.

5 principles of human performance todd conklin: The Field Guide to Human Error Investigations Sidney Dekker, 2019-01-16 This title was first published in 2002: This field guide assesses two views of human error - the old view, in which human error becomes the cause of an incident or accident, or the new view, in which human error is merely a symptom of deeper trouble within the system. The two parts of this guide concentrate on each view, leading towards an appreciation of the new view, in which human error is the starting point of an investigation, rather than its conclusion. The second part of this guide focuses on the circumstances which unfold around people, which causes their assessments and actions to change accordingly. It shows how to reverse engineer human error, which, like any other componant, needs to be put back together in a mishap investigation.

5 principles of human performance todd conklin: The Jurisprudence of Sport Mitchell N. Berman, Richard D Friedman, 2021-04-26 This textbook, the first of its kind, makes it easy--and fun!--to teach an exciting new course on the jurisprudence of sport. Unlike sports law, which treats sports as objects of regulation by ordinary legal systems, this course treats sports and games as legal systems to be studied in their own right. The book is appropriate not only for law students but also for undergraduates; it offers an introduction to legal thinking but requires no background in legal doctrine. Student-friendly and deeply comparative, the text draws examples from the world's most popular team and individual sports and games (including baseball, football, soccer, tennis, golf, gymnastics, chess, boxing, and esports) and also from less widely known competitions (competitive eating, cornhole, etc.). Chapters are organized in an intuitive sports-focused manner, covering such issues as scoring systems, penalties, league structure, player eligibility and assignment, amateurism, officiating, replay review, and cheating. The jurisprudence of sport is a fast-developing field of academic study. The authors, one of them a leading figure in the field and both professors at top law schools, maintain a high degree of analytical rigor and theoretical sophistication. Icons sprinkled throughout introduce students to fundamental concepts, some law-particular (such as rules vs. standards and prices vs. sanctions) and others from cognate disciplines (such as agency costs, the Coase Theorem, and psychological biases and heuristics). Richly filled with comments, questions, and exercises, the text facilitates a large variety of pedagogical approaches and is suitable for 2- to 4-credit courses.
5 principles of human performance todd conklin: Deep Learning Techniques for Music Generation Jean-Pierre Briot, Gaëtan Hadjeres, François-David Pachet, 2019-11-20 This book is a survey and analysis of how deep learning can be used to generate musical content. The authors offer a comprehensive presentation of the foundations of deep learning techniques for music generation. They also develop a conceptual framework used to classify and analyze various types of architecture, encoding models, generation strategies, and ways to control the generation. The five dimensions of this framework are: objective (the kind of musical content to be generated, e.g., melody, accompaniment); representation (the musical elements to be considered and how to encode them, e.g., chord, silence, piano roll, one-hot encoding); architecture (the structure organizing neurons, their connexions, and the flow of their activations, e.g., feedforward, recurrent, variational autoencoder); challenge (the desired properties and issues, e.g., variability, incrementality, adaptability); and strategy (the way to model and control the process of generation, e.g., single-step feedforward, iterative feedforward, decoder feedforward, sampling). To illustrate the possible design decisions and to allow comparison and correlation analysis they analyze and classify more than 40 systems, and they discuss important open challenges such as interactivity, originality, and structure. The authors have extensive knowledge and experience in all related research, technical, performance, and business aspects. The book is suitable for students, practitioners, and researchers in the artificial intelligence, machine learning, and music creation domains. The reader does not require any prior knowledge about artificial neural networks, deep learning, or computer music. The text is fully supported with a comprehensive table of acronyms, bibliography, glossary, and index, and supplementary material is available from the authors' website.

5 principles of human performance todd conklin: The Relationship Factor in Safety Leadership Rosa Antonia Carrillo, 2019-07-11 At the core of The Relationship Factor in Safety Leadership are eight beliefs about human nature that are common to leaders who successfully communicate that safety is important while meeting business results. Using stories and business language the book explains how to create and recover important stakeholder relationships by setting priorities and taking action based on these beliefs. The beliefs are based on the author’s 25 years of experience supporting operational and safety leaders with successful and unsuccessful change efforts in pharmaceutical, nuclear, mining, manufacturing and power generation. The author also offers compelling evidence from many social and scientific disciplines that support the conclusion that satisfying our need for relationship is a major motivator. The Five Orientations Model offers a perspective on solving complex problems when confronted with multiple demands. The book provides managers and supervisors with the motivation to build relationships and points to the conditions needed for success. It also describes a process to take united action but retain the flexibility to change course as necessary. The book is written for managers and leaders, at all levels, concerned with occupational health and safety, and wishing to learn how to leverage relationships to achieve higher employee engagement and performance.

5 principles of human performance todd conklin: The 4 Stages of Psychological Safety Timothy R. Clark, 2020-03-03 This book is the first practical, hands-on guide that shows how leaders can build psychological safety in their organizations, creating an environment where employees feel included, fully engaged, and encouraged to contribute their best efforts and ideas. Perhaps the leader's most challenging task is to increase intellectual friction while decreasing social friction. When this doesn't happen and it becomes emotionally expensive to say what you truly think and feel, that lack of psychological safety triggers the self-censoring instinct, shuts down learning, and blocks collaboration and creativity. Timothy R. Clark, a former CEO, Oxford-trained social scientist, and organizational consultant, provides a research-based framework to help leaders transform their organizations into sanctuaries of inclusion and incubators of innovation. When leaders cultivate psychological safety, teams and organizations progress through four successive stages. First, people feel included and accepted; then they feel safe to learn, contribute, and finally, challenge the status quo. Clark draws deeply on psychology, philosophy, social science, literature, and his own experiences to show how leaders can, and must, set the tone and model the ideal behaviors--as he says, you either show the way or get in the way. This thoughtful and pragmatic guide demonstrates that if you banish fear, install true performance-based accountability, and create a nurturing environment that allows people to be vulnerable as they learn and grow, they will perform beyond your expectations.

5 principles of human performance todd conklin: Interprofessional Client-centred Collaborative Practice Carole Orchard, 2015 Interprofessional client-centered collaborative practice (ICCCP) is collective by nature, emerging as it does at the intersection of a wide variety of professional knowledge and scopes of practice. Many studies of ICCCP focus on the determinants or inputs of collaborative practice as well as on the results, outputs, or outcomes. This is echoed methodologically, as a preponderance of ICCCP teamwork studies primarily employ interview and survey data. However, close observations are also necessary to build understanding of the collective behavioral processes of interprofessional collaboration. Many authors point out the need for more studies of the actual practices of collaboration. In many senses, ICCCP represents what Rittel and Webber (1973) have called a wicked problem. (p. 155) Wicked problems are difficult or impossible to solve. Their solutions depend on incomplete, contradictory and changing requirements that are often difficult to recognize. And they are confounded by complex interdependencies between actors and agents. (Drinka & Clark, 2000, p. 37) If ever there was a wicked problem, innovation in ICCCP is surely one. As a series of possible solutions to this problem, the various case studies set out in this monograph are welcomed. Learning to become a competent health professional has always been a two-part process - that which focuses on ''classroom'' teaching and that which engages students in an apprenticeship with qualified professionals in real-world settings. Universities, colleges, and institutes depend upon practice settings for the apprenticeship education of their health professional students. Practice education (PE) settings require competent health care professionals to deliver quality care to patients. Until recently, the delivery of health profession education has been almost entirely discipline based, with each discipline educating their own students in isolation - whether on campus or in the community. As is clear in this book, there is now increasing emphasis on all health care professions to learn how to be competent collaborators. This emerging shift in education has led to a new interest in different approaches to the delivery of health professional education, approaches that embrace more opportunities for interactions amongst and between learners across health and human service/social care professions. PE settings are being recognized as ideal environments for interprofessional education (IPE), in which students can witness and practice how to work interprofessionally with others on healthcare teams -- that is, to learn about, with, and from each other, for the purpose of collaboration to improve quality of care. The chapters in this book focus on the many issues that confront healthcare professionals in their efforts to provide true interprofessional collaborative care, with the patient or client as the center of focus. The term practice tends to occupy a black box in interprofessional literature. Although it is frequently invoked in considerations of collaboration, teamwork, and team working, it is seldom explicitly defined. One exception comes from Thistlethwaite, Jackson, and Moran (2013), who suggested that practice can be understood in three ways: (a) as the enactment of a role or profession, (b) as a moment of collective unity or performance, and/or (c) as a socially institutionalized and socially acceptable form of interaction requiring cognitive understanding and reflection. (p. 54) This book deals in a number of ways with these three ideas, thus providing a better understanding of the term practice by removing it from a black box and placing it within our concept of a partnership between a team of healthcare providers. It is now recognized that effective ICCCP requires the active engagement of students from different professions using interactive learning methodologies to develop health professional students'' knowledge, skills, attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors. As noted in this book, ICCCP requires a complex adult learning (andragogy) approach that is most effective when integrated throughout a program of study, moving from simple to more complex learning activities that bridge from post-secondary to practice education settings. Educational accreditation standards being developed to stimulate the advancement of IPE will have an impact on policies in both the academic and clinical settings that encompass ICCCP. Continuing professional development (CPD) is an integral part of the learning continuum to ensure that ICCCP is built on a theory-informed base and sustained in changing healthcare environments. This book will serve as a much-needed primer to inform CPD in all aspects of ICCCP. The thoughtful and clearly articulated chapters contained here are, therefore, most welcome practical guides for practice educators, and a very useful source of information for a broader audience of healthcare providers who are faced with the complex issues that confront enactment of true ICCCP.
5 principles of human performance todd conklin: Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Research and Teaching , 2010 The Federation of Animal Science Societies (FASS) has released the third edition of the Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Research and Teaching (FASS Ag Guide). The first edition was published in 1988, and the first revised edition was published in 1999. The FASS Ag Guide serves as a primary reference document for meeting the needs and requirements of agricultural animals utilized in research and teaching. This third edition differs from the past editions in several meaningful ways. The full name of the FASS Ag Guide has changed. Previous editions were titled the Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Agricultural Research and Teaching. The new edition drops the second use of the word agricultural in the title. Chapters have been added to address species handling and transportation and environmental enrichment strategies. The authors of the third edition included experts in each species and in animal care and use, including animal scientists, veterinarians, teachers, and engineers; all were chosen for their prominence in the many fields of the animal sciences so that the best available science could be applied to this revision -- FASS website.
